#steve harrington #i think it was very stupid of the duffers to push the love triangle into the fourth and even fifth seasons #when they obviously had no point to make by doing so #like they didn't extend it for a reason... the triangle had already done the work it was going to do for those characters #it was clear they just didn't know what else to do #but what it unintentionally does is give steve's character an odd weight and seriousness to his attachments #like i think in the text they're trying to say that steve is hung up on the girl who got away and this is a bit sad of him #they make other characters laugh at his six kids fantasy. they have him date strings of girls that they don't even bother showing us #and within the show it's hard not to see those as like. digs at his character. he was cool once and now he's a looooserrrr haha #but zooming out it's like. how many shows have you ever watched where a character loves the same person for five seasons #robin is a brief could-have-been but steve immediately realizes and accepts it won't happen and so that becomes something else #he never has another serious love interest. he's a teen heartthrob character who's only ever shown falling in love once #and one of the things it does to his character... unintentionally or not... is underline how loyal he is. how tightly he hangs onto feeling #he hangs onto feelings of love and loyalty even when he's broken up with and set aside #his desire to care for and protect people isn't contingent on him being in a relationship or getting intimacy or being their number one #the duffers tried to make steve's love life sad or silly or non-existent #but instead they created a guy who is incredibly serious and committed and who stands out as being uniquely in touch with a desire to love #maybe the duffers' off the charts divorced guy energy prevented them from seeing how magnetically attractive true sincerity is #who could say. but anyway steve ran away from them on that one #i'm still rambling but it also sets up steve as someone who can be sincere good friends with an ex and be there for them without strings #and that's another serious quality for a normal ass teenage guy character #steve is a normal bro-ish dude in almost every way except for his uncommonly mature post s-1 approach to love and friendship

hilarious thought. stranger things canon is sloppy enough that they never actually confirm if billy was or wasn't officially on the basketball team. they don't ever show him (or steve for that matter) in a jersey or at a game. yes, they obviously face off, but that could plausibly be gym class and not team practice, SO. just for kicks what if billy ISN'T on the basketball team. he just Does That to steve three times a week and then goes off to fucking calculus with a song in his heart

I just fucking love love love when a narrative shows me a character who is an insufferable and badly behaved bully being propped up by an even shittier familal authority figure assuring them that they are a Special Princess who deserves to walk all over everyone else, and then the narrative pulls back a little and shows me that in fact the love and support of that authority figure is Deeply Conditional and Finite and this bully is both aware of it and haunted by that knowledge. Their Special Princess Swagger is PAPER thin

Max’s eyebrows had climbed to her hairline when the outing was first proposed, much like Billy’s were now as she tried to convince him to give her a ride to Mike Wheeler’s. The satisfaction of having someone share the same initial incredulity she had felt at the outlandishness of the idea was ruined by that someone being Billy.

“The ditches are frozen solid out near the fields where the new mall is being built.” Max tried to make that sound like the end of it. No such luck.

— AKA: Come January 1985, Max and Billy are roped into ice skating in roadside ditches, an activity Steve Harrington swears is worth putting up with each other while freezing cold in the middle of nowhere. No one mentioned all the manual labor it would take for that to even be possible, let alone how tense things still are between Max and Billy since November. The Party is along for the ride. This was supposed to be a simple, mostly fluffy exploration of the stepsiblings’ dynamic, with some hints at Harringrove from Max’s POV. But it got WAY out of hand so now we’re splitting this up.

Baby’s first fanfic in over a decade! I wanted to get something out for the chill Harringrove week, but this is the best I got atm and just needed to stop thinking about it after 7k words. There is potential for the “Billy Hargrove & Steve Harrington” to become “Billy Hargrove / Steve Harrington” if I lock in for chapter 2.
