1. Understanding is important, because empathy is important. When people speak there are emotions and thoughts that are trying to communicate with you. Words without meaning are nothing, but the words will always have meaning.
When we try to communicate with other people it’s very easy for us to get caught up in what we know and forget to understand what the other person is saying. It’s like pouring water into a drain with clog in it. I’m guilty of it I admit, but at least I’m aware of the problem. It’s something I’ve noticed with other people to the point where I’ve seen three people saying pretty much the same thing, but at the same time, all three of them think the other two don’t get it. It’s ridiculous.
I remember first learning about true communication in high school. It’s always stuck with me. This was in religious education and our teacher was talking about the proper way to communicate. He was talking about when you have a disagreement with someone and he told us that yelling is not communicating, that we shouldn’t generalise and we should verbalise what we’re feeling in order for the other person to understand. It was nothing profound or anything. It was so simple. I think that’s why it has always stuck with me. What I didn’t understand was why; if it’s this easy to properly communicate with people, why do people find it so hard to do?
Growing up I never understood the need for people to argue about the most insignificant things, especially when it gets blown out of proportion. Its only recently I’ve really understood the reason why. When it comes down to it we are for the most part arrogant pieces of shit. Most of us are so caught up about our own ideas, beliefs and getting our point of view across that it’s impossible for anyone to understand each other and we end up never really listening at all. As important as it is to get our own opinion across, it’s even more important to understand what’s being communicated to us
I think if you’re able to understand people’s emotions, thoughts and the bigger picture we’re able to keep an open mind to new ideas, new perspectives of the world. Our world is so vast and we’re here for so little time, so it’s important to try and see it from another perspective, whether you agree with it or not. Remember that we don’t see the world as it is, we see it as we are.
