“I don’t really have to sing. It’s just a joke. I won’t scare customers away.”
“What? - Oh. Oh! Sorry, no, that’s not - sorry. My mind wandered and - well, it wandered. You have to sing! I love hearing you sing. Besides, if anything it’ll draw customers in. I’m sure some of them might even try to give you their number.”
“I mean only if you want me around more and singing along to songs once in a while. Promise it won’t be too loud.”
“Yeah, well... It’s not Christmas until you sing at least one carol as loudly as you can.”
“Okay, it’s been Thanksgiving and Black Friday. I’m allowed to hum jingle bells all I want.”
“I guess that means I should probably get my Christmas playlist started in The Brew, huh?”
“Why is it so fuckin’ bright in here?” he groused, clearly hungover.
“Because it’s a café, you ninny, it functions primarily on morning people. Do you want a tea? Looks like you really need one. I’ve been where you are and I’ve got a great anti-hangover brew if you’re brave enough to try it."
➳ ❝ I’m kinda looking forward too. It makes explaining him much easier.” Jeremy smirked a bit then when she offered up her suggestion. “I think it should be fine. No alcohol, no coffee, but they never said no tea.” He hoped it wouldn’t be to hard to believe that this was all because of a skiing accident. In truth though, he was avoiding doctors and was proud of making it work so far. “I mean this water’s great, but I’m sure the tea’s better.”
“Oh that’s a relief,” he said, smiling in a non serious way. Well it was a relief that she didn’t take offense to the statement, but also it was a weird thing to be drastically relieved by. “I’ve only been here a week… and I think a half now. But I’m sure if you’re here every day then you’ll probably see me a lot more often.”
— ❝ In that case, ❞ Natalie smirked, straightening up. ❝ I’ll get you that pumpkin bread and some tea. ❞ She wasted no time in slipping through the door to the back, picking up the covered plate of freshly made pumpkin bread and bringing it out to the front. She set it under the pastry glass and used a napkin to pick one off the top, placing it on a small glass plate. She took a clean mug from beneath the counter and left it under the spout of hot water as she grabbed a tea bag from the box in the back. Finally, when it was all put together - tea steaming and made - she brought it back and set it in front of Jeremy. ❝ Next time I’ll make you one of the loose leaf teas. I don’t mean to brag, but they’re quite good. ❞
❝ I hope that’s a promise. ❞

➳ ❝ Kinda. It weird because it seems like more than that, but I don’t know how to describe it. You’ll just have to meet him.” He smiled at the sound of fresh bread. “Wow I am really lucky today.” It was a stark contrast to how it had been before today. He took the mug when it was offered. “Thanks, but you’ll have to tell me what that exciting thing is. Maybe your favorite. Natalie Fitz. Well, I believe you, considering it’s an absolute pleasure meeting you too.” He sipped his water and swallowed before he spoke again. “Do you work here often?” He paused for a second. “And I mean that in the least pick-up line way possible.”
— ❝ Just have to meet him, huh? Well, I’m looking forward to it, ❞ she said, leaning forward on the counter and allowing herself a confident smirk. ❝ You want to know my favourite? Well, that’s a lot of pressure, Jeremy Hill. But alright, I’ll play. Let’s say... It’s chai tea. You can never go wrong with chai tea. It’s the perfect middle ground between sweet and bitter, ❞ she explained. ❝ If it’s not too... acidic, maybe you can have some later. ❞
❝ The pleasure is all mine. Even with the cheesy pick-up line, ❞ she said with a light laugh. ❝ But yes. The Brew is mine, so I’m here essentially every day. You, on the other hand, I’ve never seen here. ❞

➳ ❝ That’s such a relief. I know he does, but it’s a bit much. And no one believes me. He looks about as far from the motherly type as you can get. He looks like he could care less about anything. Pumpkin bread. Yes love it. If someone says they don’t they’re kidding you and themselves. And I’m Jeremy. Hill. In case you need a last name for the order. Can I ask your name? It’s for a survey.
— ❝ Ah, he’s the burly type with the secret mother side? I’ve known guys like that, but people never believe me when I tell them. Anyway, you’re just in luck. We’re just about to take out the new batch, ❞ she smiled. ❝ In the mean time... ❞ she reached under the counter and took out a mug, filling it with water. ❝ Here’s your water. In a mug, naturally, so you can pretend to be drinking something exciting. It’s an absolute pleasure to meet you, Jeremy Hill. Well, since it’s for a survey - I’m Natalie Fitz, but I promise I won’t throw any. ❞

➳ Toni was relieved when Aubrey finally gave in. Honestly, she was so excited for a night out. Aubrey had earned it after all. And Toni would be lying if she didn’t admit to needing the distraction. ❝ Deal. Worth the fun time you’ll have. Besides, how old’s this guy anyway. I keep picturing Dr. Peabody in a suit with a briefcase.”
— Natalie grinned when Aubrey finally agreed to come, despite her conditions. She was sure she’d dealt with worse in the past than whoever this Roger Flynt was. Besides, it was far more important to her that they had a good time tonight - especially the other two. Aubrey had hardly had a chance to enjoy freedom before throwing herself into a job, and Natalie would do anything to keep Toni out of the hands of Kyle.
Aubrey rolled her eyes. ❝ I don’t know. Eunice is the one who hired me. It sounds like he’s on the younger side - ❞ she shot Natalie a dirty look ❝ so it would be far more embarrassing for you to have to explain yourselves to him. ❞
❝ You underestimate my reserve, Aubrey, ❞ Natalie teased. ❝ I do this out of love. ❞

Oz nodded at that clarification. It was true. They’d been children and so much had happened since. Which made him really relieved when she suggested going to the back. ❝ You won’t be in trouble?” he question, just to be sure. He got the idea that the boss wouldn’t mind. Natalie as he understood was responsible, so he could imagine her putting herself in a position to get herself fired.
— Natalie smiled when he asked if she would get in trouble. ❝ Anywhere else, probably. But I own this place, ❞ she said, allowing herself one coy smile before she knew it would disappear for a while longer.
She lead him into the back room, which was just about spotless (she made a mental note to thank Christine for cleaning up the coffee that Natalie had spilled before running back to the front with another order). As soon as the door closed, she felt her nerves once again - the reality of having to face her past when she wasn’t prepared to.
Before she could say anything, though, before a word could leave her mouth or another thought could cross her mind, she gave into the temptation she felt the minute she realized who she was talking to. She spun on her heel and pulled Oz into a hug, closing her eyes, remembering what it was like to feel vulnerable, remembering why she hated it so much.

➳ Toni couldn’t help but laugh at Aubrey’s display from the doorway of Natalie’s room. It was even funnier considering it was Natalie’s room she was hiding herself in. She shook her head and headed over to the door, leaning on the frame. ❝ I’m not letting you get out of this like you got out of the tattoo,” she started, stubbornly. “One night at the Rail Yard isn’t permanent.” You might regret a shot of tequila in the morning, but the place was too crowded for anything else. If they were headed to the Tunnel it might’ve been another story. But Toni couldn’t blame her for hiding from that were that the case. “Come on we want to celebrate your internship and we can’t do that without you.”
— Natalie raised her eyebrows and looked at Toni when Aubrey slamed the door of her room shut, choking on a laugh. She stepped beside Toni to look inside at their victim friend, who was seated comfortably on the floor on the other side of the bed, doing her best to look innocent. When she said nothing, Natalie stepped into the room and kneeled on the floor next to the bed across from Aubrey.
❝ Did you know I have a gun in this very room? ❞
Truly, it was for the girl’s own good.
Aubrey looked startled, raising her eyebrows. ❝ Are you threatening me? ❞
