âI know my value. Anyone elseâs opinion doesnât really matter.â

How Far Iâll Go || Open
dailyshawnbutler:
Shawn clutched the USB in his hand like it was the last antidote to a deadly poisonâwhich it was beginning to feel like. This town was infested, was dying each day a little more with the law taking away everything that had made New York interesting, which had made it a tourist destinationâland of the superheroes!âwhich had made it home. Loathe as he was to admit it, Shawn had become pretty damn attached to the near constant super updatesâhad not only sought to find family in James Barnes, but had become very fond (and felt very protected around) Natasha Romanoff. Even Captain America himself had given Shawn the time of day, which was more than the former gossip columnist was sure he deserved. Heâd never meant to get in this deepâa year ago, he was reporting on the fashion trends of the âstarsââ but now, as he stood in the alley with the one and only Black Widow, hand shaking slightly around the evidence sheâd provided, he knew there was no turning back.Â
He nodded along to everything she was saying then tucked the USB into his pocket. âTheyâll still try to spin it, say Ward reformed,â he hissed. âDead men get those rightsâthey get to look like heroes when theyâre gone even if their lives were spent as villains. But if you can prove Quinn is still working for the wrong side, itâll all be over. They canât back him if heâs tied to HYDRA now.â Shawn bit his lip, not sure if what she was saying was a relief or just one more reason to worry. He was glad the Avengers werenât tucking tail and leaving, but this wasnât the end of itâfar from itâand if they kept fighting the law, the law was going to figure out how to fight even harder.Â
Shawn shut off the recorder, a reporterâs instinct at the words âoff the record.â âIâm not worried,â he lied. âAnd I wonât turn any of you in, if thatâs what youâre thinking. I know the oath I made when I took this job and youâreââ He paused; it wasnât a word he used often. âYouâre my friends. I wonât sell you out. JustâŠtry and bail me out if they lock me up for it, will you? You have all the rich guys on your side.â My mom is going to kill me, he thought distantly. She had hoped the family was out of the âheroâ business; their family had tried so hard to be ânormalâ after theyâd lost Bucky, but maybe normal just wasnât in the cards for them.Â
Natasha nodded with an affirming hum. He was right. Ward was dead, they could spin that however they liked. âIâll see what I can do about Quinn. Iâm working on it, but heâs covering his tracks very, very well,â she admitted. It wasnât defeat, she wouldnât admit that, but it was looking grim. He had someone very, very good on his side working with clearing his trail and his path.Â
âI know you wonât turn me in,â Natasha said, ignoring his lie about not being worried. She knew better than anyone that even a lie could help find the truth. âThat isnât what Iâm worried about.â
Just being there talking to her put a target on Shawnâs back. Sheâd make sure there was someone watching his apartment. Someone trustworthy. Maybe Coulson could help with that. He still owed her more than a few favors.Â
âOf course I will,â Natasha chuckled. She forgot sometimes, just how young he was. When he thought that jail could be the worst thing to happen to him.Â
âIf you need a safe house, at any point, you call me and Iâll get you to one. Memorize my number, okay? Make sure you can get in touch even if you have to dump your phone.â
Info Sharing || Natasha & Sharon
cxrter-13:
Sharon ruffled the top of Bepaâs head and began talking to the dog in mumbled baby-speak, mostly consisting of things like âarenât you a good puppy? What a great puppy, yes you are.â Yet another reason why Sharon preferred animals to humans; Bepaâs tail was wagging so hard youâd have thought Sharon had given her the moon. She looked up at Natasha as she began to play with the dog, stopping herself from saying that sheâd be antsy if Barnes was here, even if it wasnât true. Sharon knew Barnes hadnât been in his right mind when he helped Hydra infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D; she knew the man would never have shot Nick Fury under normal circumstances. Still, Sharon was an unforgiving type, even if she knew logically none of it was Barnesâ decision.
âI can imagine,â she said. âFrom what Iâve heard, the two of them are pretty close.â Bepa licked her hard on the face and she laughed, getting up from the floor in order to get her tea. She hummed as she sipped on it, more than thankful for a good cup of tea after weeks of CIA interns messing it up in ways sheâd never thought possible. âHow is Barnes?â she asked. Liho rubbed against her legs and for once Sharon wasnât irritated by cat hair sticking to her white trousers. âItâs ⊠bound to have been difficult. For him.â She almost added 'for youâ but stopped herself just in time. Emotions stuck in her throat in a lump. She could never form them into words.
Setting herself down beside Natasha, she could hear her motherâs voice in the back of her head telling her to take off her coat, so she did. âEither oneâs good for me,â she said with a smile, âthough you should be warned I canât cook if you had a gun to my head. Best I can manage is a microwave meal, or maybe one of those ones you just throw in the oven and heat up.â Even that was pushing it a little, given the multitude of times she had to run for the fire extinguisher.
It had been a while since Sharon felt like she was making actual progress on the case, and she guessed Natasha knew that. âOh, sweet information,â she said, putting a hand to her chest. âYou have no idea how long Iâve been waiting to hear those words from someone. Last lead I got was about some fuckboy in Hellâs Kitchen who was selling illegal DVDs and weed out of his basement. I swear, itâs like they took my resume and threw it in the trash the second they hired me.â
As she had already said; Natasha Romanoff was highly competent. Sharon had planned to code any information she gained today to her own thumbprint already, but the fact that Natasha had already done so just proved how good she was. It made Sharon even more nostalgic for the effectiveness of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
âYouâre a lifesaver,â she said. âEvery time Iâve been close to anything for months my boss shuts it down. Itâs like Iâm nothing but a page pusher all over again.â
Natasha bit the inside of her cheek when Sharon spoke, the implications of what sheâd said were clear. She knew Sharon meant it kindly, though. And she had every reason to be hesitant of James. Natasha would always be on his side, but she understood why it might be difficult.Â
âHeâs doing well,â Natasha said, then amended. âBetter, at least. Bepa helps, having Steve around helps. I hope I help, too.â It was a far more emotional statement than sheâd normally give to Sharon, but it was the truth. She busied herself from a reaction by pulling up the menu for the restaurant in the tower on her Stark Tablet and sliding it over to Sharon.Â
âLunch. Theyâll deliver, even,â Natasha said with a small smirk. She knew how to cook, and do it well, but it had always been work for her. She learned for some ops back in her early days and it never stopped feeling like part of a job for her. She avoided it when she could. Plus, Sam made excellent food.Â
She gave Sharon a small, sympathetic smile. âYou know you could probably get a job... somewhere else, right? Iâm sure youâve got great contacts there, but Phil still has a smaller sort of SHIELD running and well... thereâs here, too. Or freelance. Or you know... you could always retire and do some competitive underwater basket-weaving.â She smirked at the joke. Women like them never entirely left the life behind, but it was nice to dream sometimes, no matter how silly it seemed.Â
âDo you have a secure laptop to work on it in your free time?â she asked. âI can get you one if you donât, that way your boss canât touch it.â
She made a mental note to double-check with Tony, but she had a feeling it would be fine. âIâd like to see what you have, though. If you donât mind,â she said. âEven if itâs some of the same stuff. A fresh set of eyes helps sometimes, you know?â
No Good Sitting Here || Natasha & Sam
Natasha used to be good at sitting on the sidelines and watching chaos play out. Hell, it used to be her job. But, for as much as she claimed to be a spy and not a soldier, she was surrounded by people who inspired her to be more. They made her want to be better.
Sometimes she wondered if it would be easier if she wasnât.
The Avengers were under orders to stay put. Staying put would be the smart thing to do, with all of the political pressure. Keep a low profile and gather intel silently. That was what she was best at. But there was a building full of children upstate and they were in danger and that was something that hit far, far too close to home for her.Â
When Nick had retired (or retired on paper), he left her a few things to use in case of emergency and she figured this counted. She knew Nick wouldnât mind if she used it for this.Â
She padded through her apartment to find Sam, looking as anxious as she felt and she stepped behind him, sliding her arms around his middle and pressing her forehead between his shoulder blades.Â
âSo... if I were to hypothetically have an idea that might get us in trouble,â she started, closing her eyes and trying to read his reaction from the muscles of his back and stomach. It was surprisingly easy, but then again, Sam had always been surprisingly open with her. âHow would you feel about that?â
If you lost your wings forever, who would you become?
Sam Wilson.
I was already somebody before I got my wings.
Youâre more than the wings even when you have them, Sam.

Versus.
Getting into Stark Tower was actually more difficult than Remy had ever anticipated. No, strike that. Getting past a certain floor of Stark Tower was more difficult. If it didnât have to do with business with Stark Industries or the Avengers, visitors were pretty much only given tours with special visas. They were scanned and documented and Remy didnât want to be on any more databases than he already was. Trying to get into Stark Tower wasnât even something he was being paid to do; He just wanted to see if it could. The place was virtually indestructible and made of smooth glass for seventy stories. For all the interesting stuff worth snooping around, Remy would need access to those top-most floors. If he even managed to break in, there was Starkâs virtual butler to worry about. Remy was sure that Big Brother Jarvis could see anything and everything that went on in that building.
Breaking into Stark Tower had seemed like a pipe dream until visitation visas were extended to the X-Men as a gesture of good will. Remy hadnât gone at first but he hadnât been able to stay away for long. He was too curious about what went on inside the Tower.
With a legitimate ID badge, Remy had gained access to the building and to certain floors. He snooped around HR and public relations, had gotten a guided tour through some of the labs, and had ended up on one of the training floors. His guide had explained the technology behind all of it and how it was suited to different Avengers and their corresponding skill sets. It had taken all of his inner strength not to snort. He wondered how this system compared to the Danger Room. Stark was brilliant, yes, but the Danger Room had been around for decades. The Danger Room had data from hundreds of different mutants and their powers, had seen thousands of simulations. Unable to resist, Remy had requested to test Starkâs technologically advanced gym for himself. His guide had tried to talk him out of it, but Remy insisted. If he couldnât snoop around, he wasnât going to have this trip be wasted.
Pulling out his bo staff, Remy entered the gym and tried a low-level simulation to test the waters. It was alright, just a scenario against some virtual muggers. It didnât take long to dispose of the muggers so Remy steadily started to increase the levels. He wanted to see if he could get to a place that might be meant for Captain America or Iron Man.
In a capture the flag type of scenario, Remy was gracefully flipping and jumping over lasers to get from one side of the room to the other. He ducked and jumped, bent backwards. He seemed weightless. Even though he still wore his trench coat, it just seemed like an extension of his body despite how it should have bogged him down or triggered a laser. Remy swiped his hand through the virtual flag and his time replaced the quickest one on record by mere seconds. He stood and smirked, bo staff twirling through his fingers. Take that, Avengers.
It had been awhile since Natasha had been to the training gym. She had a private gym, and her studio. But she was alerted when new people used the gyms. She liked to test her skills and often. When JARVIS alerted her that Remy LeBeau was using one of the advanced training gyms, she chuckled to herself and got ready.Â
She came in with plenty of time to see the man get through the drill in great time. She was pretty impressed, perched on top of of one of the stair railings by the door, clapping lightly with a smirk.
âNice to see you, Mr. LeBeau,â she said, still swinging her legs under her. âYou looked good out there.â It wasnât often she complimented someone on their fighting style, but it was earned in his case.Â
She didnât fight alongside the X-Men often, but a good deal of them were well-trained, though others relied too much on their abilities. It was always interesting to see which one fell into which category.Â
âYou busy?â she asked after a moment. âI could use a sparring partner.â
â Â as if âfight like a girlâ was an insult
cigarsandclaws:
I barely know what that is so no, I donât. I got a skype chat or whatever the hell this is.Â
Been a while, hasnât it? How you been, âTash?
Still. Proud of you, getting with the technology.Â
Busy. You know, tearing congress a new one, hunting down Nazis, trying to avoid being arrested. How about you? Still teaching âartâ?
Nice Suit (Whoâs Your Tailor?)|| Natasha & Matt
themanwithoutfear-fh:
The inside of the old building hardly resembled Fogwellâs Gym anymore. Previously scheduled for demolition, the run-down and abandoned place had been cleared of its earlier furnishing, and with them, its personality. Steel lockers that once held gloves and robes⊠Square rings, over which boxers had danced⊠All were gone. Only the tattered posters that still clung to the peeling walls hinted at the buildingâs glory days.
To anyone else, it was nothing but an empty shell, but to Matt Murdock, the place was still full of ghosts. He could still smell the sweat and blood that had soaked into the wooden flooring over the years; an aroma as familiar to him as his own. In part, heâd been raised here⊠doing homework in a corner while his father trained, eating a sandwich for dinner as Jack Murdock put another fighter through his paces. It had been a good place, and probably the last place Matt had felt a real sense of family.
The lawyer smiled as he loosened his tie, dropping his cane on the floor and dragging over a couple of wooden pallets. Theyâd have to do for seats and table, since there wasnât much else, but anything was better than putting food on floors covered in rat droppings. Â Opening the brown paper bag, Matt started to line up the cardboard cartons on the other pallet, smells of fresh Vietnamese cooking filling the air.
âIf youâre going to keep lurking in the shadows, Iâm just going to start without you,â he called, a familiar scent and heartbeat revealing his dinner date. âIâm not about to let this feast go cold on your account!â
Natasha secured the perimeter of the building from the outside while she waited for Matt to arrive. She didnât have to wait long, but when she came inside, she wanted to secure the inside of the building, too. She was pretty sure he could detect her presence, and the presence of anyone (or anything) else, but it was habit for her. Something she that kept her calm.Â
When he spoke up, she laughed outright, silently striding over and sitting down beside him. It didnât take her long to dig out the cashew chili chicken and spring rolls. Sheâd been to this place a few times, recognizing the scent of the cashew sauce even without super senses. âYou have good taste,â she complimented balancing the container on her knee to dig in.Â
She tilted her head to the side and took him in. He looked a little tired, but who wasnât in their line of work these days? She wasnât entirely sure what was wrong, but if she could help him, she would. Heâd been a good ally and friend.
After finishing one of the spring rolls, she finally spoke up. âI assume thereâs going to be some business mixed in with this social call?â she teased with a small smile.
Silly Merry Christmas || Logan & Natasha
Often Natasha did her holiday shopping online, it was safer than going out, especially with the new political climate. But there were some things she had to get in person, from small shops sheâd known about for years. And she still had no idea what to get Sam. She left the small tea shop, bag in hand, when she spotted a familiar set of wide-set shoulders and a stocky torso. She smirked, reaching for one of the small chocolates the tea shop had snuck into her bag. She waited until she was close enough, aimed, and tossed the foil-wrapped treat, chuckling as it hit him in the back of the head and fell to the ground. She collected the fallen chocolate from the cold sidewalk (god forbid some anti-avenger cop try and arrest her for littering).
âDonât often see you out and about,â she commented to Logan, nudging him with her shoulder. âShopping?â
Which kill do you remember most vividly? Why? How many do you think you've forgotten entirely?
My first one. Because it hurt more than any other one was the first.
I spent a long time being brainwashed by my handlers, so I donât actually know.

Shawn tugged down his hood as he stopped into the alley. His fingers played over the few buttons on his old school recorderâsomething heâd borrowed from his grandmotherâand as the figure appeared out of the shadows before him, he pressed record. âWe have to make this quick,â he hissed. âIf I donât see your face, weâre not technically doing anything wrongâthereâs no information I can give to the government. But youâve got to give me what you know, or this never ends.â
Since the announcement that heâand most of his fellow reporters at the Bugleâhad been subpoenaed, their work had come to a great, crashing halt. Nearly all of Shawnâs stories were about the supers: they were the most interesting part of his job in New York, and with this government vs. heroes debate still raging like wild fire, it was all the people wanted to hear about. If he couldnât post with the Bugleâand he coudlnât, not nowâthen heâd take the story elsewhere. Heâd hardly had his âAnonymous Blogâ up for more than a couple hours, but the promise that the âReal Super Newsâ could be found there had already gotten him a few hundred thousand hits: and that was fast money (not to mention, okay, that the stories were still important). The beauty of the internet age. âYou said you had news on what the supers are deciding with registrationâso what is it?â
As far as Natasha was concerned, Shawn Butler was family. James was one of the most important people in her life, and Shawn was his family. And Natasha saw a lot of James in him. She saw the loyalty, she saw the quick thinking, she saw the bravery. She saw all of that even if he didnât. She even chuckled a little as he found a way around their meeting being brought up in his meeting with the law.Â
She reached out around the corner, sliding a USB drive into his hands. âHereâs what I know, dirt on the frontronners, Quinn in particular, and the little proof I have that Ward was HYDRA. It isnât much, but itâs something. I canât speak for anyone else that I know, but I plan on fighting this. Iâve never been afraid of the government, and if they want to subpoena me, I imagine it will be quite similar to my last appearance in front of the senate. Let them try and stop me. A good chunk of the Avengers have lived through more government oppression than that, weâve seen the worst of humanity, and weâll fight to make this better, even if weâve got to go underground to do it. We donât want to, but we will because weâre not just going to stop helping.â After a moment, she paused then added, âShawn, off the record? Donât you dare get yourself hurt over this. Do you have extra protection? I can make some calls.â
Dig it Up|| Natasha & Clarice
princessofportals:
Clarice loved coming to the roof and watching the kids. It was relaxing, and kind of like meditating to her. Sheâs been meditating of course, she figured it was just as important to keep her mental and spiritual self-healthy as it was her physical health but lately, thereâs been so much on her mind that itâs been harder and harder to simply relax and force the thoughts out of her head. If only she could have been born with that superpower instead.
Clarice was a little surprised to see another women on the roof as well. An woman about her age in fact. âIâm afraid Iâm much too old to go here. I used too though.â Clarice chuckled softly as she made her way gracefully to the edge and propped herself on it. She peered at the other closely and hummed in thought. âIâm afraid I havenât seen you around here, thoughâŠSo are you friends with someone who goes here?â Clarice asked curiously.
Natasha was briefly surprised when the girl didnât recognize her, but it was a welcome surprise. Even if the girl was just pretending, it was still nice to make her own impression on a person rather than their own impressions about the Black Widow. The Black Widow was as much like Natasha Romanoff as the tiger at the Central Park Zoo was the stray cat behind the Tower.Â
Natasha listened to the woman. If she was too old to go here, but she was still on the campus, then she was in the X-Men. Natasha thought over the members that sheâd studied. After a moment, she gave the girl a small smile. âYouâre Blink, right?â she asked, turning to shake the girlâs hand. âNatasha Romanoff. I do a lot of mediating work between the X-Men and the Avengers.â
Itâs officially time for Non-Stop Christmas Music. Hope yâall are ready.
Have I told you lately that youâre my favorite? :)
