I want to start writing on tumblr but 1) I'm scared 2) i fucking scared so could you maybe please give me advice
WAAAH, thatās so great to hear! Iād be honored to give a fellow soon-to-be Tumblr writer some advice. (: Just keep in mind that these are only my opinions and you donāt have to follow anything you donāt like, haha.
So I know how nerve-wracking it could be to start writing on a blog because then your work will officially out there for anyone to see, but thatās okay! Weāve got a pretty great community here.
Now, donāt worry about the amount of notes you get or the number of followers you have, especially not right now in the beginning stage of writing. Youāll have some good days, youāll have some bad days, but no matter what, donāt let anything discourage you from writing on. Itās already pretty accomplishing to have a story out anyway. However, if you do want your work to get noticed by people who you think would like it, make sure you hashtag your work with relevant hashtags that relate to what youāre writing about. Itās sort of like a nice opportunity to make your way into the writing world, like youāre popping out of a door and saying, āH-hey, hi, guys! I got a story Iād like for you all to read. (:ā Then as time goes on, itāll be more like, āI GOT ANOTHER ONE FOR YāALL!ā
Grammar and punctuation are very important and makes a difference in how a sentence is read. Punctuation, for example:āWait why are you saying that Ben could have it I already told youāāWait, why are you saying that? Ben could have it, I already told you.ā That wasnāt the best example, but hopefully you get what I mean. However, weāre all human and weāre bound to make some mistakes in most of what we publish. Oh, but if English isnāt your first language and thatās the language you want to write in, just do the best you can!! English can be difficult, so props to you for even going out of your way to write it. You can also ask someone else to read your work before you publish also, if you like.
Ask for feedback and take into consideration on what people say, but ultimately go what you think is best for your stories, whether that means taking their advice or doing it your own way. Writing styles vary.
Make a master list and archive them into one post. That way, you and the readers can easily navigate through your work as the list grows. Plus, people tend to ask if you have a master list so they can read more of your work, which I find is a nice compliment. :D
Distribute and space off the layout in appropriate scenes so youāre not left with this humongous chunk of writing that contains 300 lines, LOL. For instance, when you have a conversation between two people, skip a line when the convo switches off to the other person. Just in case Iām not describing it right, use a book as a reference and see the points in where they skip a line.
If thereās anything youād like the readers to know before or after they read a story, write a little A/N, or authorās note, at the end or the top of your post. If youāre writing anything about abuse or self-harm or something scary as that, write TRIGGER WARNINGat the very top. You can write about those topics, but I really hope you donāt romanticize them.
Youāre going to have tons of drafts, so write them all on a Word document first if it helps you get your mind going or on paper. Then, when you feel like a story is finished, copy and paste it onto here and publish the finished work!
Well, thatās all I could think of at the moment, but like I said, these are just my opinions. Every writing style is different, babe. Just take your time and donāt rush. Writing on here is supposed to be fun, so enjoy it. (:
