A good friend of mine once told me that I hate “obvious music” after we could not agree about whether Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song” is good or not (it’s not). Though my friend was wrong about Rachel Platten, she was right about me.
There is something about poetic writing that sails the blood-rivers of your body and feeds into your soul (#metaphor), and that is why I usually prefer it over “obvious music” (except for when the obvious song is obviously bumpin’ i.e. Justin Bieber’s “Sorry”). For real though, I don’t claim to be super literary or wordsy, but it’s hard not to get excited over good writing!
Here are the lyrics to a John Mark McMillan song that I cannot stop listening to. It is artful and beautiful and it will help you through exams:
Though the earth cried out for blood satisfied her hunger was Her billows calmed on raging seas, for the souls of men she craved Sun and moon, from balcony turned their head in disbelief Their precious love would taste the sting disfigured and disdained
On Friday a thief on Sunday a king Laid down in grief but awoke with the keys to hell on that day First born of the slain The man Jesus Christ Laid death in his grave
So 3 days in darkness slept the morning sun of righteousness But rose to shame the throes of death and overturn his rule Now daughters and the sons of man would pay not their dues again The debt of blood they owed was rent when the day rolled anew
He has cheated hell And seated us above the fall In desperate places he paid our wages One time once and for all
So bask in it, remember that “the man Jesus Christ laid death in his grave”, and go forth and crush your finals.
P.S. If Rachel Platten inspires you, that’s awesome, keep doing you, and if this post offended you because of it...~SORRY~
EDIT: I just realized that I posted this song years ago but I am choosing to post it again because it is so good.
