Native Grass Seedling ID Guide - Part 1 Cool Season Grasses: Wallaby grass Rytidosperma spp. or Austrodanthonia spp. seedlings are very small, fine and thin with some leaves as narrow as 1.5 mm across. Early seedlings tend to have a widening leaf with a narrower base. The leaves are folded, rather than rolled as they emerge. In slightly older plants they can be identified by the presence of hairs at the junction of the leaf and the stem. The leaves are vertical and only the older leaves lie flat to the ground. Darren recommends that when you sow Griffin weeping grass (or any weeping grass for that matter) DO NOT apply fertiliser. Griffin has adapted over thousand of years to Australian natural soils types , which are slightly acidic and low in phosphorus. Introduced grass species prefer quiet the opposite , that's why horticulalist recommend apply “starter” fertilizer and lime when sowing grass seeds. Weeping Grass doesn’t need fertiliser to germinate strongly and applying a high phosphorus fertiliser can actually prevent Weeping grass from germinating.
