Day 12 - Theseus

Deciding to take this challenge more slowly so I don't overwork myself. Since I missed the Minotaur, I took an opportunity with the Theseus art to draw him as well.

Theseus is best know for slaying the Minotaur. With the help of Ariadne's knowledge, he finds his way through the maze and back, killing the Minotaur in the process.

Day 11 - Pandora

Inspired by the painting by Walter Crane. Pandora is created by the Gods with all their gifts. The first woman, not resisting curiosity, opens the box containing all evils in the world - only hope remaining.

The story is told by Hesiod, and is where the expression "Pandora's box" comes from.

Day 10 - Asklepius

Since I am afraid of snakes, I decided to draw baby Asklepius in the arms of Apollo. Then, as I was drawing, it occurred to me how funny it is that Apollo's son looks older than Him. Thus, baby with a moustache.

Asklepius is cut from his dying mother's womb by Apollo and Artemis, and then raised by Chiron in the arts of medicine. He is God and Hero of medicine, pharmacy and health. ⚕️

Day 9 - Achilles

Obviously I needed to draw the most famous ancient greek gays. ⚔️

Achilles, son of Thetis, is the hero of The Iliad. He goes to fight in the Trojan War with his soulmate Patroclus - resulting is his demise and Achilles's rage.

Day 8 - Icarus

The myth of Icarus is a cautionary tale. To escape the Labyrinth, his father makes wings of wax with which they can fly. Despite his father's warning to not fly too close to the sun, Icarus does, melting his wings and falling to the sea to his doom.

Before her Kidnapping by Hades, Persephone rests and plays in her mother Demeter's garden. Before being Queen of the Underworld, Dread Persephone, she is known as Kore. This is best know through the Homeric Hymn to Demeter.

Medea is a witch and murderess from greek mythology. She first kills to help her lover escape, and then when that lover is unloyal.

The goddess Juno 🪿💘🦚🐐

Happy September everyone! Did you know that on the kalends (1st) of September, the Romans held ceremonies for Juno on the Aventine? More specifically, they worshiped her form of 'Juno Regina', or Queen Juno.

When illustrating her, I wanted to emphasise the Roman aspects of Juno, rather than her syncretism with Hera, so I only included the peacock as a feather detail in her diadem. The goatskin is attributed to Juno's role as a protector of Rome, and has similarities with Minerva's Aegis. Her temple on the capitoline was also guarded by geese, which famously alerted the Romans when Gallic forces tried sneaking into the city at night.

I'm really pleased with how this turned out, especially since the white goose mirrors really well with Venus' white dove!
