Hair Journey
Some things I wish I knew before going natural
When talking about going natural all you ever really hear about is all the benefits and versatility it’ll bring you, but there are a number of things people tend to leave out, not necessarily bad but things I wish I knew.
First things first, don’t expect your hair to look like or resemble anybodies. Comparing your hair to others can cause you not to love YOUR natural look, it can make you resent it and not want to wear it. Everyone's hair is unique and even if you hair looks similar there is always a big difference.
Being natural is harder than it looks and maintenance of it cost more than those who get relaxers. You're always going to be buying product after product.
Shrinkage!
The tighter the curls the more your hair will shrink, as well as the dryer the hair the more it will shrink so don't expect your hair to stay it's full length while wet when it is dry.
Others opinions:
Yes everyone will have an opinion about your hair. what you should do to, how you should wear it, etc. Some may not like it and others may but the only persons opinion that matters is yours!
Touchy Touchy:
One thing I've experience as a natural and I'm sure many others have as well but everyone wants to touch you hair. Some out of curiosity in whether or not it's yours, others because they are fascinated by your curls and how soft it looks. Some people ask and sometimes you just feel a random hand in your head. You may find it annoying at first but you will eventually grow to love those that stop to admire your hair.
Natural Hair do’s and dont’s
Do’s
1. Use Nourishing & Stimulating Hair products:
The right oils and extracts can make for super treatments that nourish the scalp, encourage hair growth, and keep your tresses strong.
2. Get Regular Trims:
Never sacrifice your hair’s health to keep length. Hair looks much healthier after a trim, which should be done regularly. How often all depends on your hair and how often you use heat tools. Most normally go every 3 months. I personally get my hair trimmed every 4 months or every 6 months.
3. Avoid High Tension Hairstyles:
I know we all love our box braids, Senegalese twists, faux locs, sew ins, etc. but they don't always keep our hair protected. Braids and twists that are tight can put too much strain on the hair and follicles and lead to shedding and loss/thinning of edges. This doesn’t mean you can’t have these kinds of styles, just means you have to remember to keep them loose and be gentle with our hair.
4. Hydrate Your Hair While Wearing Protective Styles:
This is important, yes the protective styles can help avoid some of the stress and strain on your hair, but if we don’t keep our hair hydrated underneath it those protective styles can cause more damage than good.
5. Create A DIY Detangler:
Mix up your hairs favorite oils/conditioner with water into a spray bottle creating your own detangler to help you better detangle your hair.
6. Keep Your Hair Regimen Simple:
Remember less is best, Find the products that really address your hair’s needs and use them regularly.
7. Be Gentle With Your Hair:
You’re probably reading this and saying “well duhh,” but the common misconception is that natural hair is stronger than other hair types. Some people People think that the tighter the curl pattern, the tougher or thicker the hair and unfortunately that is not true. Tightly coiled hair is actually fragile and easily damaged.
Dont’s
1. Don’t over wash your hair:
Over washing especially when using shampoo can be really drying to the hair. Several factors may determine how often you should wash your hair, including your overall hair health, hair type, and the time of year.
2 .Don't Oil/Grease Your Scalp:
Greasing the scalp with petroleum keeps your hair flat and can coat strands, which cause buildup and scalp irritation. It is best to use light oil.
3. Don't Over Moisturize Your Hair:
Moisture is good but overdoing it will cause the products to just sit on the hair, blocking your strands and weigh your hair down.
4. Don't Be Quick To Dismiss Products As Ineffective:
It can take time for your hair to respond to new products you introduce to it. Trying something once and not getting the results you desire doesn't necessarily mean the product is not effective. Sometimes you use to little and sometime you use too much, but the only way to know for sure is to try the product again.
5. Don't Get Caught Up In The Natural Hair Chart:
Natural hair chart can be helpful with determine your texture type, but it is important to understand that those charts can be misleading. Your hair density, porosity, how it feels to the touch, and curl pattern are all contributing factors. Many people have multiple hair textures on their head. It is extremely important to know how many textures you may have in order to address the different needs of each hair type, and how to effectively care for and style your hair.
6. Don't Compare Your Hair To Others:
It is important that you don’t compare your hair to friends, family or someone you admire on YouTube. So what if it doesn’t look like theirs or if theirs don’t look like yours Everyone’s hair has its own unique beauty. Accept it, love it and celebrate it!
7. Don’t overdue heat styling :
Meaning direct heat from styling tools like a curling iron, flat iron, or blow dryer. Some naturals do it, other don’t recommend it. I personally get my hair straightened professionally 1 to 2 times a year. If you are going to use heat be sure to use some kind of heat protectant.

Natural Hair Story.
As a child I had natural hair, I’ve always had my godmother to do my hair and she would keep it braided up in protective styles. One day my godmother's daughter did my hair do to the her not being available and she decided to put a relaxer in my hair because it was “too much.” My air broke off a lot and my mother was told that she had to continue to relax my hair in order for it to grow back as long as it was. Fast forward to about middle school around the 7th or 8th grade. I did a lot of experimenting around this time, extensions, bangs, hair color and sadly bleaching my hair. I didn’t lose any hair when I bleached it and at this time I wasn’t getting relaxers but I wasn’t 100% natural nor was I “transitioning,” so my bleaching experience was not bad at all. However over that thanksgiving break my mom told my aunt to recolor my hair to its natural color. I told my aunt I didn't mind her dying it but I did not want a relaxer, but she ended up putting on in my hair and dyed it which resulted in my hair breaking off in the beached areas. So throughout my freshman and sophomore year I did a lot of styles that did not involve my hair being out and just let my hair grow. During the summer of 2012 my best friend and I “big chopped” together. Then about a year or so later I didn’t like how much my hair would shrink so I put a texturizer in it to help stretch my curls, then again in 2014 because my hair became so thick and hard to manage during my pregnancy. That was the biggest mistake of my life… not knowing it was supposed to only go on my roots, I applied it to my entire head including the ends that were previously texturized a few years back. I basically had no curl pattern. In January of 2015 I cut my hair cut into a bob for my 21st birthday, wanted something new, wanted to look “older” (still looked like a baby) and I wanted my curls back! Since then I have been all natural and loving it! It took some time for me to re grow into my curls and the shrinkage but as time went by I began to wear my hair curly more and started getting a blow out less.
Moisture
So, today I thought I’d give you guys some natural hair types. One of my favorites/most important hair tip is moisturize your hair! I cannot stress this enough, you curls moisturized looks wayyyy different than curls that is lacking in moisture. There is more definition, more shine and increase elasticity. You must be sure to not over moisturize as well. The key is knowing what your hair wants or needs in any given moment. Moisture is important because it helps prevent breakage which also minimizes shedding.
Ways to keep hair moisturized:
Pre-Poo your hair- Pre-pooing helps protect your hair from moisture loss before you shampoo your hair.
Co-washing- This provided conditioning conditioning properties that can help with dryness. Very good for those naturals that do not like washing their hair with shampoo.
Deep condition- This should be done on a regular basis, however often you feel your hair would need it. It is best to use heat during this process to help open up the hair cuticles to allow moisture in.
Water- Drink lots and lots of water.
Protect your hair- Use silk or satin based sheets and pillow cases if you are not a fan or wrapping your hair up. If you like head wraps or bonnets use satin/silk as well. Cotton and pull hair out as well as absorb the moisture from your hair.
curly beauty!
Story Time! Who Can Relate?
Okay, so I know i not the only one. Don’t you dislike when you put in so much work into a hairstyle like flat twist or a braid out and just know it’s going to come out perfect, then unravel it the next day and it looks the complete opposite? Like why did I even bother! Lol. I called myself trying to do flat throughout my whole head for the first time and I was more than positive that my hair was going to be on point. I even left it in for two days to help it look more defined, however my hair did not get the memo. I’m pretty sure it was my unravel technique but my hair did not look like a fresh flat twist hairstyle. It almost looked as if I did a simi blowout on my hair, there was no saving it so I had to just throw my hair back into a bun. I was just so over my hair at that point and wanted nothing else to do with it. I honestly wish I had a picture include but that was literally the last thing on my mind.
Natural Hair Struggles
We all have our individual struggles with our natural hair, and then we have those struggles we share in common with others. Majority of the time regardless of the struggle we can all relate in some way. I personally used to struggle with keeping my hair moisturized. Most of it was due to not being able to find the type of products my hair liked or my hair getting immune to a product and it no longer working. I was also what some call a “lazy natural.” I did not like putting much work into my hair and I would rather cover it up. So that also contribute to my hair feeling dry and brittle. To slowly get myself into giving my hair what it needed I beginning to deep condition weekly as well as co-wash my hair until my moisture leave got the where it needed to be. I would then apply creamy products to my hair (that’s what my hair prefers) and either twist or braid it up for the night to allow my hair to absorb everything and prevent it from tangling after detailing it. I only used shampoos when my hair needed to be clarified like after a week long washing go.
Everyone's hair is different and what works for one person may not work for you. It is all trial and error, that is the only way you’ll learn your hair and the type of products your responds better to. Your hair tells you what it needs everyday and it’s up to you to know the signs.
