Hey there. My name's Kat. I'm working toward a Master's Degree in Avian Science. I am currently working with wood ducks, placing cameras in their nest boxes and studying their behavior. This is where I dump my photos from my field work adventures.

I have heard fisher cats’ vocalizations being described as screams or cries of kids or children… but I never understood exactly how uncanny their actual sounds are!

We get black phoebe nests under some of our wood duck boxes and this lil fella was hanging out politely waiting for us to leave to sneak back into the nest

And here's the first duckling I handled this year! I haven't been able to be out in the field as much as I used to since I'm on a part time GSR (grad student researcher) appointment.

hello followers. Sorry I haven't posted much here. I haven't been in the field much this season since I have been really jamming away at my thesis. But I'm out in the field tomorrow with 5 possible wood duck hatches so hey I might post some stuff!!

Ologies is too interesting of a podcast. Listening to it on the way to my field site, a route I have driven a million times before and I totally missed my exit! Proceeded to get lost in a housing development but it was still worth it.

First successful hatch of the season! Soon we'll be swimming in ducklings. This nest had 12 bouncing babies out of 15 eggs.

Welp. The squirrels were still there. But they should be old enough to be out of the nest soon hopefully. But honestly it's been a slow season so far so we felt no need to disturb them.

Get the most up-to-date outbreak advice and information here.

Please keep this in mind if you leave out feeders regularly. Clean them frequently, take them down if you see lethargic/sick birds hanging around them, or, now that spring has arrived, take them down altogether. Hummingbird feeders included. Right now highest risk states are WA, OR, CA, OK, TN, KY, MS based on the CDC and reports of salmonella getting transmitted to people but as birds continue to migrate back from where they wintered, transmission still may be high throughout all of North America.
