Some hellos from Nautical Culture!
Mid-hike with 5/6 of Nautical culture! A great weekend of rehearsing and tracking!
Rehearsal.
Nautical Culture and Pretty Much Anything
Before Nautical Culture, there was Pretty Much Anything. “PMA,” as we called it, was a cover band consisting of Jason Young, Anthony Campolo, Erik Edwards, Joban Aguilar, and myself, Guillermo Garcia Jr.
Vanessa Rosas, now a member of Nautical Culture, had just left for grad school and suggested this track to me. What started as a “for-fun” jam session between Erik and myself, soon became the formation of the cover band, Pretty Much Anything.

“Only Water” Lyrics
Wait, hey, don’t get emotional
Stay on the plain
You’re okay
It’s only water making you sway
Fact: We can’t have luck at all, so we want to fall,
And we want to fall
Trapped in cans, and stuck to calls, where we were in awe,
And we were in awe
Can’t we have no love at all, so we’ll never fall,
And we’ll never fall
Wait, don’t get emotional, stay
It’s only water making you sway
Scrap the plans, we’ve gone to far, since we lost our star,
We just sit in cars
Cut the strands we used to gnaw, and unclench your jaw
As if you never saw
Can’t we have no love at all, so we’ll never fall,
And we’ll never fall
Wait, don’t get emotional, stay
It’s only water making you sway
Lyrics by Vanessa Rosas

Nautical Culture’s “Only Water” Tiny Desk Contest entry. Follow the link, and thank you for listening!
Nautical Culture’s “Only Water” and NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest
After a weekend of rehearsals and studio takes, the final product for Nautical Culture’s tiny desk contest song entry, “Only Water,” is underway.
“Only Water” is a musical collaboration between vocalists/composers Vanessa Rosas and Guillermo Garcia Jr. The song combines easygoing, yet subtly catchy vocal melodies with an odd, yet playfully driven time signature.
Erik Edwards, Nautical Culture’s friend and drummer, flew in from Lodi, CA to help make the recording. His meticulously skilled drumming and keen sense of improvisation add to the song a relaxed hint of electronic and jazz.
In addition to playing “Only Water’s” intricately funky bass line, this recording could not have been done without the invaluable sound engineering expertise of Jason Young.
“Only Water” will be one of the five songs featured on “What Year Is It?,” Nautical Culture’s debut EP. The EP is scheduled to be released later this year.
Keep checking nauticalculture.tumblr.com for the link to our contest video. The song will be posted by Monday, February 1st.
Day 1 Of This Weekend
With nearly everyone together for the first time on the new tracks, we are in really good shape for the upcoming EP. Stay tuned for a new performance video at the end of this weekend!
Putting together this year's tiny desk contest entry. Stay tuned for more material soon!
Just purchased a melodica.
Decided to use it for a tune we enjoy performing on the streets of Downtown Ventura, CA as Gitanos de Agua (an “interproject” of Nautical Culture).
