"Psychedelic Surf Wave Rock"
I've been thinking about recent music artists, especially from Canada. "The Velveteins," - comprised of Spencer Morphy, Addison Hiller, Dean Kheroufi, and Daniel (Danger) Sedmak - are one of these brilliant modern bands that find my fancy, only helped that they originate from my home city of Edmonton, Alberta. Their general sound is best and easily described in my mind as psychedelic surf rock with hints of new wave music scattered about much of it: Surf in the tinniness/tone of the guitar + the bending of the strings with the vibrato to create a beachy vibe, even their faster and harder tunes have this surf feel or relation. Psychedelic in subject matter/presentation; a fair few Velveteins songs go far heavier in sections to points of fuzz, plus moments of space where it feels almost as if the listener is floating off of the ground. New wave in their use of synths, most especially on their second album "Declarations of the 3am Freeway."
(Mind you, I don't consider indie as a genre of music, but rather as a category of artists, most indie music can fall into other genres that better describe them) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Standout tracks of theirs include: "Strange Side of the Street," off of their second album. It is one of their heavier tunes which absolutely screams at the listener, but is subtle and sparse in language. "Let it Pass" is an expert sample of their lyrical style, while also being an interesting outlier in style; it's a song that touches base with country and western music. "Baby Blue," "Daydreams," "Slow Wave," "See the Ground," "Midnight Surf," and "Sun on the Rise," are also exceptional highlights of their discography. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
