**ignore the source, I just wanted to post this story.
This is reminisent of Mazlum Doğan, an Alevi PKK member, who set himself and his prison cell in Diyarbakir Prison on fire and hung himself on Newroz 1982. He did this in order to raise awareness on the inhumane conditions inside Diyarbakir Prison and other prisons after the 1980 coup d’etat.

“One of the most powerful ways that Kurdish culture is maintained is through the language of symbols embodied in tattoos and handcrafts. Some of these symbols reach back to the very beginning of our history. The symbols are our ancient written language, and every design carries meaning.
The symbols have changed very little over time. Some are tribal and have been handed down from community elders. Many are intended to ward off bad luck, or else to attract happiness and prosperity. Many of them are taken from nature and are stylised versions of animals, trees and stars. Symbols have also historically held special significance in Kurdish religions.
Most of the designs are simple forms, easy to reproduce, but they carry complex meanings that have survived for thousands of years. They are the oldest source of our history, a history that otherwise would have been lost.”

the main pattern on this carpet represents the tree of life, which is framed by a comb symbolizing protection of marriage and birth. the star represents protection against wolves.
hand-knitted socks mainly use the symbols of protection from snake bites and represent fertility.
the diamond shape featured in this carpet represents courage and strength.
framing this carpet is a line of birds representing love and happiness. the 'evil eye' on the upper right corner wards off misfortune.
zoné ma (our language) [dir. by aylin kaya, in zazakî and turkish]
zazakî and alevism are the subject of aylin kaya’s documentary that shines a light on an endangered language (zazakî) and culture/religion (alevism). zazakî is one of “eighteen endangered languages in turkey” due to oppressive and hegemonic laws in the turkish government which used to prohibit the teaching of indigenous languages found in anatolia. aylin kaya travels to a small zazakî village to speak to zaza people to voice their concerns about the disappearance of zazakî in the young zaza generations.
the lost daughter of halabja
on march 16th, 1988, the kurdish town of helebce was attacked with chemical weapons, including mustard gas and nerve agents, as part of the genocidal anfal campaign against kurds in southern kurdistan. over 5000 children, women, and men succumbed to the gas and perished, and at least 10,000 suffered severe injuries, many of them still dealing with the consequences of the attack to this date. as a result of the attack, many families were split up and destroyed and several children, like maryam, became orphans. the lost daughter of halabja follows maryam’s quest to find her birth parents and family after having been seperated from them for 30 years.

the turkish offensive on efrîn and the people of efrîn has almost entered its second month. efrîn has been seized by turkish forces and kurdish flags have been replaced with turkish flags. recently, avrin hospital was struck by turkish airstrikes, killing sixteen people. the turkish government continues to deny this, despite first hand accounts on the attacks.
according to the syrian observatory for human rights (SOHR), the death doll has risen to at least 245 civilians, including 41 children. since the beginning of the attacks on january 20th, 2018, at least 650 injuries have been reported though numbers could be higher. turkey has carried out over 1000 air attacks on civilian populated areas, including schools and farms. nearly 50,000 have fled their homes.
the people of efrîn continue to suffer as the world watches. please speak out on this situation. silence kills.
anyone who wishes to help the people of efrin can do so by donating to the heyva sor here.
Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê has a base in North Syria and is able to obtain food, medical and other survival supplies from North Iraq and some regions in Syria to take them to Efrîn. We are calling out to the internationally community to make financial donations as any material donations can’t be delivered from Europe due to the blockade at the boarder with Turkey.
