I love this iconic scene from the movie that unfortunately don't exist in the book, so... I drew them with the book version in this scene because I can 😈💙

One day, I need to do a better concept art for all the characters in the book...

Someone pointed out that the scene really happens in the book, in another context near the end, and it's true!! And also was when Sophie was still old!!! And I knew it, but I just wanted to mimic the iconic scene in the film, with my book designs! :) I just explained super badly, sorry!

Anyway, just when I finished this drawing and also printed it, I realized that Howl should have stronger and muscular legs thanks to the rugby, but again I fail my task of accuracy because the Ghibli design is embedded in my brain 😭!!

DTIYS - Howl

In 2020 @/Giulia_Blue (IG) did a DTIYS with Howl and obviously, I had to do it! Thanks to all their "Modern" HMC drawings, I wanted much more to do my own version of the book! Also I take the chance to do it in traditional and add all the metallic ink that I had on hand.

Old!Sophie Hatter - Howl's Moving Castle ver. Book I always forget that I have a tons of sketches that I never finish and I like them so much to show them to the world (even when I really hate that people love the sketch more than the finished illustration 🤡)

So appreciate this new (well... it's super old, but I think is the first time that I post it properly) sketch of Sophie, the fist time that she saw her face when the Witch of the Waste put the spell™  on her ✨

I need to focus in try to start this project properly

At some moment, I just realized that I NEVER drew Sophie in her Old form, in which she is almost all the time in the first book!

So I decided to solve this problem and make the iconic scene of her reflection!

I also remember my first concepts for her were more like in the film, but when I reread the book, I just found that she was kind of the opposite, too skinny, almost all bones! 🤔

These two weeks have been very busy and I've come home exhausted but happy! Now, I'm back to the routine by uploading more sketches from Howl's Moving Castle Book ✨

I love to see Sophie happy, so I drew her picking flowers after the first book 💙 And I needed to draw Howl with a mullet catching a star , before the book started 🌚

When I was writing the post on Cara for this drawing, I didn't know why I tried to match these two sketches when they are in opposite moments in the story, but looks like my past me was conscious 🤔

These two sketches, of course, are another redrawing of another two sketches that I don't have in hand right now, but as the other drawings that I showed you, the improvement is so big... 🫪

Anyway, this was my first attempt to make Sophie's nose more recognizable and the first attempt of: Howl's MULLET; because I am going to remind you, that Diana Wynne Jones wrote this book in 1986 and when she saw Andre Agassi (tennis player)* said that was just like she imagined him.

It’s time for another HMC Book version sketch ✨

Today I bring you this early concept of the Hatter’s Family that I made few month ago!

I tried to make it look like an old photo, but I was too lazy do it properly🥴

In the beginning of the book, in the first few pages, Diana describes Sophie's family and how her father's debts after his death, sets the stage for the beginning of the story we all know.

I included a portrait of Sophie and Martha's dead mother because I want to think that Mr. Hatter and Fanny still love and appreciate her.

Of course, I'm going to start posting my first fanart here with this drawing of Sophie Hatter from Howl's Moving Castle Book ✨

I still love this drawing and is one of my favourite drawings ever. And not just only from my Howl's Moving Castle's collection.

I can't say so much about this illustration, more than I wanted to draw Sophie happy, because she deserves it!

I use this drawing as my reference for her face and hair colour. I know that everyone put her ginger, but in the book it's described as "reddish straw" so I wanted to make her a little bit more golden as the straw.

And of course, like the other drawings, I made a previous one that wasn't that good and a year later tried again 😅

Something that I love in the novel are Sophie's sisters!

In the movie they mention Martha in the beginning as an acquaintance but not related to Sophie's family, and Lettie was a mix between the two sisters and they only show one scene with her.

In the novel Martha and Lettie are much more important for the plot!!

And of course, I did this drawing twice, the colour one was the first, and only one year later I did it again but just in B&W. The improvement with my drawing skills those years was crazy!

Maybe there will be a 3rd version with the definitive designs 😌!

PS: I didn't forget to post yesterday, I just was dying with the period.

Chapter One: In Which Sophie Talks to Hats

In 2020, and again in the University, for my Illustration class, I decided to do my 3rd attempt of the first chapter illustration for a project.

Again, with the aesthetics of the film, but with much better watercolor and drawing skills!

Yes, when I started to try to illustrate HMC with the aesthetics of the film, I also created an obsession with the Victorian period and I almost got bonkers investigating the fashion of the time and every detail 🫠👍🏻✨

It's been 6 years since this watercolour, and now I can appreciate how good it was :')

Of course, now can be better, but for that it will need to wait a tiny bit more 😉

In 2017, when I started university, I tried for the second time to illustrate the first chapter, as an excuse for my painting project.

Because of the project's format, I made things complicated for myself, and instead of doing a single large-format drawing, I decided to do two smaller ones... Choosing Chapter 6: In which Howl expresses his feelings with green slime.

Once again, I combined the book's descriptions with the film's aesthetic, even though I was convinced I was doing it 100% as the book described 😔

The truth is, I'm not proud of Sophie's drawing because in that year, my drawing quality dropped considerably. But even with its flaws, Howl's drawing isn't that bad..

Guess which was my favorite part to paint 🫣

As I wrote in the last (super long) post, I started to try to illustrate Howl's Moving Castle book in 2015.

This was my first attempt of the first chapter of the book: In which Sophie talks to hats.

Of course, this one was really inspired by the aesthetics of the film, but just with the description of the book... Or something similar 😅

The fist one, made with pencil, is not more than 10cm. I don't know exactly why, I had the tendency of drawing in very small formats with a lot of the details 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fun fact:

As a lot of people, when I was a child and I saw for the first time the Ghibli film of Howl's Moving Castle, I just fell in love.

I was SO obsessed with the film, that when the copy that I had, started to fail and jump from the Spanish dub to Japanese, I just memorised all the dialogue...

BUT, even with that obsession, never crossed my mind to search for more information about Howl's Moving Castle until 2013.

That year I discovered Diana Wynne Jones and THE BOOKS. A TRILOGY OF MY OBSESSION. That, of course, I read all of them in 2 days (Never in my life I read so much and fast like that).

In those times, I didn't know English very well, so I started to really focus and learn, to write a letter to Diana and ask a billion things because I really wanted to illustrate correctly her books... just to discover two months later, that Diana died in 2011...

I was so sad about that, that until 2015 I didn't have the motivation to draw anything about HMC.

I made my first illustration on 31.01.2015, trying to illustrate the first chapter: In which Sophie talks to hats, and since then I didn't stop and do it over and over again.

I just want to share all my versions until the most recent one, explain all the story behind them to not feel like a crazy person 🫪👍🏻

Today is May 1st, and I'm celebrating this day as the "beginning" of the story of Howl's Moving Castle book by Diana Wynne Jones (and Michael's b-day!)

I'm a huge fan of the trilogy, and this month I just want to share some ideas, sketches and concept art I've created over the years ✨

Last week @mirtadraws and I, finished The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett, the sequel of The Colour of Magic and was time for me to draw fanarts of the beautiful adventures of Rincewind and Two Flowers ✨
