Goodbye Ireland and Cartoon Saloon ! After 2 projects and 3 departments it's time for me to go home 🏝

I'm grateful for this time and all the cool people I met and stuff I learned 💛🍻

Sorry to the rest of the country, but Cartoon Saloon will occupy 90% of my Ireland memories 😅

Now it's time to take a little break and then see what I'm gonna do next 👀

decided to watch Sandman season 2 and literally couldn't finish it, gave up in the last 3..4..maybe 5 episodes ...

I remember having liked S1 when it came out - S2 quality took a nosedive, the fall accelerated when the key to hell plotline was concluded and after destruction's plotline ended it became almost unwatchable

I think that one of the most important things I ever learned in life was from The Science of Discworld, that the book called "lies to tell to small children". How many states of matter are there? School taught me three, but there's a whole bunch of them! They taught me that because I was seven, and the trio of solid, liquid, and gas, were concepts that a seven year old can understand, and it was enough to help me understand the world around me. Most seven year olds won't care about or understand fermoinic condensates, but they're important if you study, uh, something (physics I guess?) and once you're at the point they're relevant to you, you'll be taught them. So, how many genders are there? School taught me two, but the world taught me there's more. Society taught me sex and love is something between a man and a woman, but the world taught me it's nothing so limited. These lies to tell small children aren't always as harmless as the number of states of matter, and you're not always lied to for a good reason. You gotta stay on the lookout for the lies you've been told, and who had your best interests at heart while doing it. Next time you're ready to get all heated over somebody being WRONG on the INTERNET, it might be worth asking if, when you were a small child, somebody lied to you.

After looking through many (many) bat genera on iNaturalist, I decided to draw the incredibly charming proboscis bat (Rhynchonycteris naso). They are nocturnal and they spend the daytime hanging onto trees in a line, one behind the other. They live in South America and eat insects. Please search for some photos of these guys, they are even funnier in real life

I have worked in scicomm for a decade, some of that at a paleontology. I would ask you to trust me that evolution is popularly mischaracterized like a kind of smart investment rather than a game of chance and circumstance and that every day I had to find ways to delicately correct guests’ misunderstandings, but you can literally just watch almost any dinosaur or prehistoric animal documentary with an ear for the language and framing around it. You could probably make a drinking game out of it but I think you might die if you took a shot every time a dinosaur documentary invoked the concept of monarchy alone.

The language used in communicating scientific concepts is not neutral—just look at how the concept of evolutionary “fitness” has been warped in popular understanding to justify eugenics and ableism. There are some really good papers out there on stuff like the rhetoric of invasive species and how it reflects and reinforces xenophobic and nationalistic sentiments—to the point that some of it just reads like find-and-replace Yellow Peril propaganda.
