Hey, I'm fairly new to this whole witchcraft thing and just recently began to be a Wiccan. So, I'm obviously extremely interest and into witchcraft, but I'm a college student and bROKe aS fuCc!! I can't really afford a bunch of crystals and herbs (other than the basic ones I already have in my kitchen). I don't know what I'm even asking, but do you have any tips or anything to help??

You really don’t need fancy things to be a witch. My favorite kind of witchcraft is when I pull string, lint, a nickel, and an old paperclip out of my pocket and a rock from the ground and be like aw hell yeah let’s see what we can do with this today.

Magic is intent. It’s energy manipulation. It’s wanting something and bending the energy of the universe to your will. Tools (herbs, rocks, candles, fancy whatsits,) are all just amplifiers. With enough determination, anything is an amplifier.

also im a natural hoarder and i pick all sorts of stuff off the ground and use that in my practice

Sharpies, in my opinion, are a witch’s best friend. Sigils everywhere. Sigil magic, making pendulum boards, writing chants, etc.

Ordinary Rocks are honestly great. Pick a rock up off the ground, draw a thing on it, charge it, bam you have a charm. Place em around your room, you now have a physical anchor to make a ward or barrier. Paint runes on them for divination. Trap nasty entities in them, throw them at your enemies. The possibilities are endless.

Random Sticks make great wands. And if you know what tree they fell off of and it’s got a good magical meaning, hella.

Tea is nice and different plants can do different things. Shitty Kitchen magic is fun–salt is the best banishing and cleansing tool there is. On that note, tea leaves are for good divination. You can work any kind of food/herb into magic, no matter how basic. Here have a correspondence list.

Cheap tea candles work just as well as fancy ones for rituals, and you can reuse them a lot. Color magic is great but white is the universal candle and can be used as a substitute for any other candle.

Tarot Apps for your phone will do simple spreads and also daily card draws.

Pendulums can be made out of ordinary string and a rock if you wanna go super basic. Necklaces with pendants also work well.

Music magic is totally free. Twist your favorite songs into spells to work for you. Chant them as words of power.

Centering, Grounding, and Shielding

- From my Grimoire

A Preface

Something that I don’t think enough people cover when it comes to The Craft, is how to keep yourself protected when doing spells and rituals, or communicating with spirits. This is a very basic aspect of witchcraft, so I’d like to take a moment to go in depth on the topic to make sure that as many people as possible, can find something that will work for them! Of course though, there will be some methods that I either don’t have experience with or may have simply forgot to mention. Find what works best for you and your practice, and look at some other articles or books as well!

Centering

First off, what is centering? This is basically you preparing yourself and getting in the mindset of doing a spell/ritual. This is taking a moment to yourself to make sure you’re intentions are in the right place, and everything is set up and ready to go. Centering isn’t too difficult to do, so there’s honestly not too much to say on the topic.

Method I like to begin centering with meditation. Relax yourself and get into the “witch headspace”, if you will. Cleanse yourself, and maybe even take a shower or a bath. Next thing is to gather your thoughts, write some questions down on a piece of paper or on your computer and answer them. Things like “What is my motivation?” “What outcome do I want” “How do I want to do this?” If you really take a moment to understand what you’re doing and where your heart lies, your spell will be at it’s most effective.

Grounding

Grounding is an important thing to do after any spell you perform. While it doesn’t necessarily hurt to do before a spell, it can limit your meta-physical performance. Grounding is connecting you back to the earth and bringing you back to your physical body, getting your head out of the clouds if you will, and sometimes when performing a spell that’s where you want your head to be. If you’re working with any earth based magick though, this can greatly help, so just figure out what works best for the kind of spell you’re doing.

Methods

Roots - This is my covens favorite method to ground. This is basically where you have a meditative moment, plant your feet on the ground, and “sink your roots in”. First thing you wanna do is get in some kind of contact with the ground or floor, just anything that is a solid foundation. Plant your hands or feet flat and start by breathing deeply. You wanna really take in the energy from the earth, pay attention to all of your surroundings and take in the moment. Next close your eyes and start focusing your energy at your hands or feet. (You may feel your hands start to tingle or even go mildly numb) Lastly, release that energy and push it into the earth. Let it soak in deep, and if visualization helps, imagine your roots growing down.

Going outside is another very good method to reconnect with the Earth. If at all possible, I like to go outside barefoot and feel the grass on my feet. Really connect to the earth, take in your surroundings and walk around as much as you feel comfortable.

A Dump Stone - Just about any stone will work, but generally stone that come from bodies of water, have holes, or are green or black tend to work the best. Basically just hold the stone in your hand and let any and all negative energy flow out from you into the stone. Stones can handle quite a bit of negative energy so don’t be afraid to let it all come out. After you’re done though, you’re immediately going to want to cleanse your crystal with whichever method works best for you. I prefer to let mine sit in salt overnight, or until the feel done.

Drinking a cold glass of water, splashing cold water on your face, or even taking a really quick cold shower is also a really good way to ground yourself. It’s all about being present in your body, and nothing can bring you back into the now like some cold water can.

Shielding and Wards

Shielding yourself is important when it comes to any kind of magick, because there truly are negative entities and energies out there that like to take advantage of people. It’s a sad truth, but this is why we learn to protect ourselves spiritually. Putting up a shield or ward isn’t difficult, and sometimes you do it without even realizing!

Shielding Methods

Visualization - This is my favorite method to teach beginners because it doesn’t require any tools just you, and yourself. The begin, start by getting into a calm relaxed state, maybe even meditate before hand. Next, imagine a ring of light around yourself starting at your feet. This light can look like anything, be any color, and be any shape so the only limit is your imagination. Once you have the ring of light, imagine it slowly coming up around your body, let it fill your heart with warmth and let it remind you that you are safe spiritually and no negative entity can harm you. Once it has made a complete bubble around yourself, say some affirmations and remind yourself that you’re strong and can handle anything. The more you believe in yourself, then the stronger this shield will become. 

Smoky Quartz or any other black stone, when kept on the person or placed at the feet can create a ward as well. For those less imaginative, this is a very good alternative because you have the crystal to support you as well. 

Magick Circle - There are many ways to open a magick circle, but heres a really simple method. Hold one of your hands out, palm up and focus your energy in your hand. (You may get that warm, tingly, or numb feeling, if not though thats okay!) Really let it bubble up into your fingertips, and once there, point a finger out and draw a circle around yourself and say some simple affirmations of safety and peace. Just like the visualization method, this works best the more you have faith and believe in yourself. 

Simply stating that you are, or feel safe is another way to shield yourself spiritually. You remember how when you were little and alone in your room at night and you thought you heard something scary? You covered your head up with a blanket right? Do you remember how safe you felt after doing that, like how nothing could get you? That was quite literally you putting up a shield. Remember your intentions and feelings are the most important thing in magick, always keep that in mind!

Warding Methods Wards are another variation of shields, but these are things you put on the physical plane rather than a spiritual one. 

Runes/Sigils - A really good way to set up a ward is to carve or draw some runes either into the side of a doorframe, a candle, or even on a piece of paper to burn later! If you’re going to carve them into wood or draw them, charge the tool you’re going to be doing it with. If your going to use a candle, burn the candle whenever you feel like you need it most! And as for burning paper, keep the ashed around and maybe even sprinkle them into every corner of the room.

Salt - Put lines of salt on the top of your door and window frames, and sprinkle some in every corner of the room.

Stones - Certain stones are said to be warning stones and will break if danger is near by. Malachite is one of these stones, and is fairly easy to get your hands on. Place this stone above door and window frames as well. 

Holy/Blessed Water - A drop placed in every corner of the room creates a barrier around the room.

Brooms/Staffs - Place in the corners of rooms, and said to fall over if danger is near by.

Black Candles - Burning a black candle is said to bring protection and keep a room hidden from spirits.

Eggshell Protection Powder for home

(This is the process that works for me, practices and traditions vary)

1: Save old eggshells. In this batch I used approximately 10 eggs. If you choose, use a number of eggs which could be magically or energetically significant. Wash eggshells in hot water and set aside to dry. Some people will take the extra step to peel the inner membrane off in order to get a finer powered, but I didn’t mind if it was chunkier.

2: Bake eggshells for 10 min at 250 degrees. Watch them closely, don’t let them burn! Allow time to cool.

3: To pulverize the shells: A clean coffee/herb grinder will work, but I prefer my pestle and mortar in order to work my intentions in kinetically. -I do a lot of spirit work so I also added protective/purifying herbs including himalayan salt, pepper, red pepper, and angelica root. As I set my intentions during grinding, I left a ‘door’ for the specific spirits which are my primary contacts so as not to inadvertently wall them out.

4: Transfer powder to clean, air tight storage. - Use a small funnel and a reused salt or small herb jar and gently transfer powder. Pour in batches in order not to accidentally over spill. I made more powder then this jar could hold so I ended up transferring to a larger one.

5: Use After smoke and bell cleansing the house, I sprinkled the powder around the perimeter of the property and along all door and windowsills.

There ya have it! Layer your protections with other techniques such as sigils, energy shields, salt rings or protective entities and enjoy an energetically safe home!

Low Spoon Spirit Work/Companion Tips

12 Spirit Work Tips for people with low spoons, or just anyone who doesn’t have as much energy at the moment.

Tip #1 -Look at the stars with them

I really love to look at the stars with my companions. It is amazing after a hectic or stressful day to just sit outside and think about nothing with my spirit family.

Tip #2 -Watch Tv

Seriously just sit down, and decide on a show together. Ro is a huge fan of Peaky Blinders on Netflix, so I always try to watch at least an episode of it when I can with him.

Tip #3 -Find a YouTuber they enjoy

Ro is a big fan of beauty gurus and Archie likes to watch horse videos with me. Hyl seems to like when I binge watch music videos. There is something for every companion on youtube.

Tip #4 -Hum to music together

I love to sing but sometimes I don’t have enough energy to. I usually just hum while laying down if I can’t sing right then.

Tip #5 -Write a story with your spirit companion as a character.

I’m currently working on a story with both Archie and Ro in it and Hyl is gonna make an appearance in one of my other story’s. For me writing is super relaxing and low energy.

Tip #6 - Draw a Doodle of them

I doodle anyways so just channeling a little energy into what my companions might look as a doodle isn’t a huge thing. (This is a bit more high energy and is only for when I feel a little better than normal.)

Tip #7 -Cuddle them

My all time freaking favorite. This is the lowest of all the energy things. Its also pretty self explanatory.

Tip #8 - READ BOOKS!!!

Can you tell I like reading with my companions? Hyl and I bond over reading literally every day.  

Tip #9 -Write a letter

Pour out your feelings, hopes and dreams in this letter and then show it to them. Also one can try channeling with their companion to receive a letter from the companion.

Tip #10 -Write a poem

If you are an artistic person or like writing poems this one is for you people that are blessed with an awesome vocabulary. Also you could write one line of the poem and they can write the next line.

Tip #11 -Play Hot&Cold

Try to feel their energy and use how your body responds as a way to detect them when they are nearby. It is super easy to turn this into a fun and entertaining game.

Tip #12 -Twenty Questions

Use a twenty questions app to learn things about them that you might not ask them yourself.

hey my dudes don’t worry about it. these kinds of questionsaren’t dumb—everyone starts somewhere, and often, “somewhere” is a little bitof a trainwreck at first. ground zero is scary when you’re looking at otherwitches who seem to have their shit together, but everyone’s flailing a littlebit internally.

and if we’re being honest, i only set up my altar to aphroditeto a couple of days ago. i doubt i’ll ever leave the trainwreck station completely.

BUT communication is fairly easy! the method i use is

a GODPHONE is a somewhat direct communication between aperson and a god.

the reason this metaphor works (at least to me) is that it’sa lot like a real phone in the sense that the each god has a phone… but itmight get hijacked by another god who needs to talk to you. or they might just not pick up because they don’t need to interfere currently.

sometimes, you have a “bad connection” because you aren’tready to hear a message, or because you’re having a bad day and can’tconcentrate.

the thing is, you don’t always directly hear it. just assome people can sense auras and “see” the colors without physically seeing it,a godphone works in the way that you “hear” the answer without really hearingit. it’s a lot more sensation than it is words at first. (you can refine itlater)

i hear a lot of people saying that they can’t communicatewith gods, or that they don’t trust themselves to understand messages beingsent to them. well, i have a message for you:

ANYONE CAN USE A GODPHONE and you just FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKEIT

some people are more inclined to it than others. some people have to work really hard at it. but i mean it when i say that anyone can learn.

if you want to start practicing, i would recommenddedicating a pendulum or similar divination tool to deity communication. i useda dedicated pendulum to talk with my gods to get used to feeling their answersalongside seeing the answers right in front of me. i used it for years untilaoibheall literally broke it and told me i wasn’t allowed to use it anymore. itdoes limit you to preprogrammed answers, but it was very helpful for me.

while using the pendulum, you learn to read their energies and can slowly (or abruptly) wean yourself off of the pendulum.

and until you can “hear” things clearly? pretend you do. do you have a vague but uncertain feeling that your god is happy with what you just offered them? that’s a godphone in the works. latch onto that and learn to identify it. meditate on it, really feel it deep in your bones.

it’s daunting at first, but it’s achievable with some work.

I wish with everything that I have that I had the same relationship with my cause you did yours, I just don't feel that same closeness...

This isn’t exactly a question but I hear this a lot and I’ve gotten a lot of questions in dms about how to connect with gods, the most comment lament I’ve seen from baby witches is that they don’t know how to interact with their gods and get close to them. So here’s some tips.

COMMUNICATION is key. >>Talk to your gods.<<  Talk to them a lot. You know how you have distant family who you only see on holidays or when you need something from them, and you’re not very close with them and you end up drifting? The same thing will happen with your gods if you only engage on sacred days or when you need something.

You god obviously wants to connect with you, so you should make an effort to connect with them! Dedicate meals to them, invite them to accompany you on tasks you enjoy or you think they’ll enjoy, give them little gifts to decorate their altars, share snacks and drinks, dedicate art to them, the possibilities are endless. Treat them like you want them to be there.

The second most important rule is TREAT GODS LIKE PEOPLE. People with an immense amount of power and insight and experience who usually know better than you, but still people. Gods are human-made, and they have human flaws. Even if you don’t believe they’re human-made, just look at old stories—they get jealous, petty, and make mistakes. They are not perfect beings.

ASK THEIR OPINION on what they want! Research is excellent, but everyone does things differently and has unique relationships with gods. If you don’t know what to offer them, how to worship them, what they want from you, then ask. And if they leave things up to you, then that’s a pretty sweet deal for you because they want you to put personal touches on things and see what you can do!

Sometimes gods can be picky, but NEGOTIATION is always on the table. If your god is telling you to make blood sacrifices or that you have to eat raw steak to channel their power, you might wanna talk that out and come to a compromise. Nothing is absolute, everything can be tweaked.

and on that note, YOU CAN ALWAYS SAY NO. If you have a god who is demanding too much, or who makes you uncomfortable, or who has put you in a bad situation mentally/physically/etc, you can always say no. If you can’t say no (if you can’t negotiate) that is an ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP. And yes, those can happen with spirits and even gods! Sometimes gods just don’t fit well with you!

A RELATIONSHIP WITH A DEITY is fundamentally the same as a RELATIONSHIP WITH A PERSON whether it be a friendship, a romance, a mentorship, or something else. Both are built on trust, communication, and understanding. I cannot emphasize enough how much you need to COMMUNICATE with your deity to have a healthy happy relationship with them. It really is as simple as talking to them to strengthen your bonds.

Seriously just talk *everything* out and y’all will be Gucci.

a few witchy tips

•collect salt packets from restaurants/cafes. you can do so much with these things
•set up a cleansing and charging station. arrange crystals in a pattern that draws energy out of an object, put out a bowl of salt & various herbs, have a bottle of (moon) water at the ready, or whatever cleansing method you prefer. this way if you ever need to get clogged up or negative energy out of a crystal, pendulum, or any object, you can quickly cleanse it and charge it with positive energy.
•if you practice astrology, have a folder in your notes app with friends & families star signs or birth charts for easy access
•for those who wear bra’s or bralettes, put a salt packet in the left of your bra and switch it out at the end of the day. having the salt close to your heart all day will aid in emotional cleansing, so its great for a witch with mental illness or anxiety, or getting over someone. doing this everyday has helped me SO much. its so clever. •draw or paint any sigils/ruins/witchy symbols on the soles of your shoes or anywhere else on your shoe (or draw sigils onto tape if u don’t want to draw on your shoe). the dirt & water coming into contact with your shoe will charge the sigils and send the energy out into the world and into the wearer, and the kinetic energy from walking and running will charge the sigil aswell. grounding sigils will work particularly well for this tip. •save binural beats, meditation music, or chakra balancing music onto your phone and use it as an aid to meditate on the bus, train, school, or work.

cleanse all materials before beginning

as you add all the items to the bottle, you can speak your intentions aloud. for example, I silently affirmed this:

my love is radiant and present in every encounter.

Get to Know Your Deck Spread

Here’s a lovely spread for all of you out there who are new to tarot, recently received a new deck, struggle with bonding with your deck(s) and/or are having issues getting clear or understanding readings. Sometimes decks have personalities to them, they have their own likes, dislikes, alignments and even preferred ‘work’ to go into. They also often require bonding to get the most accurate smooth readings. I have explained before the differences in my decks and what they like to answer, and I know of others who struggle bonding or understanding who their decks are. This spread should be of help!

1. How is your deck feeling today? Are they in a good mood ready to work? Or are they just having an off bad day? I have found decks, like people, can have moody bad days. These days their readings may be harsher than usual or even not even slightly logical. Its good to see what mood your deck is in before using it for readings, especially readings for others (and especially if they are paying for them). This may also affect the questions they will wish to answer.

2. What element does your deck align with? All decks are different and some may align themselves with specific elements. Is your deck fire, water, earth, air, spirit or a combination of them? This may affect the manner which they read. Air decks may be more interested in giving creative advice and focus on individuality, free-spirited natures, the arts, and even love. Water decks tend to focus on emotions and seeking gentle fixes. Fire decks tend to be the most assertive, they are competitive, encouraging, brave, passionate but also tend to support the idea of feuds. Fire decks, also from my experience, tend to be very blunt about things. Earth aligned decks tend to be a bit calmer, they focus on bonds with people such as family and friendships. They also focus on careers, prosperity and money matters. Spirit decks, tend to like to do more of the ‘divine’. They focus on self-enlightenment, self discovery and communicating with supernatural forces, guides, and deities.

3. What Questions does your deck enjoy answering? Does your deck enjoy answering questions about love? Friends and family? Do they enjoy giving personal advice? Do they like money matters and career focuses. This could determine what questions they may be the most accurate and ones they will give the best advice on.

4. What Questions does your deck least like to answer? These are the questions they may not have the most accurate advice on. Such as my Rider deck greatly dislikes romance questions so I never use him for them because he will always just advice break-ups no matter the situation.

5. What is your deck’s current feelings towards you? Does your deck feel close to you? Is it a strong professional business bond? Or is it more like a friendship? Do they feel distant from you? Like you ignore them? Do they not understand you or feel like you are a stranger? Do you intimidate them?

6. How can you improve your relationship? How does your deck feel like you two can do to help build your relationship? Practice more or perhaps make spreads.

7. A Negative trait. Pretty self explanatory, this is a negative quality about your deck that it feels you have a right to know about. Take note that this is a negative trait in the mind and views of your deck, its something it feels is negative.

8. A Positive trait. Again, pretty self explanatory, this is a trait that your deck feels is a positive trait it has. Again, this is a trait seen as positive in its mind.

Deck Interview Spread

I found this spread a few years ago on Aeclectic Tarot. It is a simple six card spread that allows you to meet your new tarot deck and get to know it. It’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s personality. It will show how it can help you grow, become a better reader and a better person. It is usually the first spread I throw for any deck.

The cards can be laid out any way you prefer, I lay mine out left to right.

Card #1: Tell me about yourself? What is your most important characteristic? The general personality of your deck. This question will reveal if your deck is painfully truthful, a prankster, a pragmatist, a romantic, etc.

Card #2: What are your strengths as a deck? The best features of your deck. This will help decide what kind of questions to ask and spreads to throw.

Card #3: What are your limits as a deck? This card represents the challenges, blocks and obstacles your deck may have. This is also helpful to decide what questions to ask and spreads to throw.

Card #4: What do you bring to the table? What are you here to teach me? We all have teachers in life and Tarot’s higher purpose is to teach us. To show us our areas of growth and help us improve.

Card #5: How can I best learn from and collaborate with you? Tarot, like all relationships, is a partnership. This card shows how to best utilize that partnership and shows you the best way to approach your deck.

Card #6: What is the potential outcome of our relationship? The most likely result of working diligently with your deck.
