Picked up a Vortex PST gen2 1-6 this past week. Very impressed. Glass is noticeably cleaner than any other scope I have seen in the sub 700 dollar price range. Holding a razor or night force next to it is about the only way you can tell it’s inferior. Built like a tank.
Initial thoughts after unboxing and sighting in:
- Much better than any scope I have tried below it’s price range. (Pst gen 1, cmr4, leupold,Nikon, Burris) It is almost embarrassing looking through a strike eagle considering these can be had below MSRP if you do research.
- The finish is not as glossy as people make it out to be, I threw a larue mount in the picture next to it for comparison and it is not nearly as bad as others I’ve seen. I am willing to bet the finish on newer batches has improved since it appears photos from earlier models were glossier.
- it’s heavy, but well within the bounds of most 1-6 variable powers. The vast majority of the market actually comes in a tad heavier.
- The turrets are veryyyyyy stiff. If you are a person who dials in a lot before shots this is not the scope for you. If you make corrections during zero and leave it then this may be a positive. Maybe because it’s brand new? Definitely the stiffest turrets I’ve used and I pretty much only go by audible clicks.
-Reticle is daylight bright and the on/off between brightness settings is very nice. Very well done.
- In comparison to the razor 1-6 this is pretty close. The “pencil thin” background of the razor gen2 is still there, but it’s more of a sharpie now. Eyebox to me seemed about the same. There’s a saying that this is “80 percent of the razor at 50 percent of the cost” and that is very accurate.
- keep in mind if you mount this on an AR variant, certain back up sights may not fit as the scope is pretty large. It fits magpul buis by a hair for reference.
Overall it was exactly what I had hoped for and in my opinion will kill the 3 gun/tactical variable optic market.
