ted had been hesitant to come to the minister’s ball for a few reasons, but the primary one had been the fact that there was a good chance of his in-laws being there. the black family, some of the most prominent members of the wizarding community, absolutely despised him. thus far he’d been successful in avoiding any uncomfortable family reunions, and kept his nervousness in check– but the lucky streak had to come to an end eventually. 

“merlin’s beard, i am so– sorry…” his voice faltered as he recognized the woman he’d bumped into (or bowled over, rather) as narcissa. “should’ve watched where i was going. are you alright?” ted bent down to help her off the floor.

               --- if narcissa had known she would encounter ted tonks at the ball, she would not have gone. she assumed he was at least intelligent enough to avoid her, as she was avoiding him. she did not hate him because of his blood status, that was the least of her concerns. narcissa hated ted because he stole her sister, destroying her entire life in the process. that had been the driving force behind her parents deciding her husband for her ( they didn’t want her to end up like andromeda, who’s name now held poison when it dripped from their lips ). if it hadn’t been for him, it was possible the blonde would actually be happy. the very mention of him made every hair on her body stand on end, and his act of practically crushing her didn’t change any previously formed opinions.

               --- now embarrassed and on the ground, eyes flittering to look at her from every direction, narcissa felt her face heating up. partially from anger and partially from the shame she felt. she looked at the extended hand with disdain, the same expression staying on her face as she locked eyes with ted and ignored his offer of help and his question, standing up herself on shaky legs. “ yes, you should have, ” she all but spat the words at him, “ you’re lucky it was me you ran into and not somebody else. i don’t believe in drawing my wand at parties but many people do. ”

narcissa malfoy — new years eve ball @ the ministry

narcissa wears a silver and periwinkle floor-length gown with floral and pearl accents. the bodice and sleeves are sheer, with jeweled accents. she doesn’t like traditional wizard-wear, finding that dress robes don’t compliment her the way she would like them to. therefore, she opts for dresses from muggle designers, much to the dismay of her parents and other older blood purists.

she keeps her white blonde hair down, pinning back a few of the front pieces for a crown effect well-suited for the woman described by many as the pureblood princess. simple jewelry is in her ears. 

around her neck, a string of pearls gifted to her by her mother. on the fourth finger of her left hand, a large, silver wedding ring embedded with diamonds sparkles. narcissa wants to be a spectacle. the envy of women and men’s object of desire.

               — “ excuse me, just what do you think you’re doing ? ” narcissa was doing her very best to keep her voice soft, not wanting to draw attention to herself and the odd boy who was leading her towards a throng of dancing couples. to her left, a giggling group of other teenagers stood, eyes glued to the strange pair as the blonde woman tried her hardest to pry her hand from his without seeming too obviously confused.“ i don’t remember accepting an invitation to– ”

               — dance. while narcissa loved dancing, dancing with strangers was not on her list of things she wished to do tonight. maybe if she had consumed more champagne before being whisked away she could have accepted it with a lighthearted laugh but that was not the case. as the music slowed to a waltz she found herself moving stiffly along to the sounds of violin, her nails now digging into the boys shoulder. “ who are you ? is this a strange game of some sort that i don’t understand ? ”

               — possibly the worst thing about these parties ( the worst on a long list of other terrible things ) was the large amount of estranged family members narcissa was bound to run into. she was certain andromeda and her home wrecking husband were around here somewhere, and she prayed she wouldn’t run into either at any point. one person she could stomach, though, was sirius. despite his views which conflicted with her own, the two had always gotten along quite well. not as well as her and regulus got on, but still, they were civil. she figured this may be her only time to catch up with him — possibly forever, given the current political climate — and with the hopes her parents weren’t eyeing her like hawks, she approached him, lightly tapping on his shoulder to get his attention.

               — when he turned around and her light eyes met his dark ones ( he had inherited the black family eyes that seemed to skip her ), she felt a pang of regret. it was doubtful he would want to speak with her, especially with her recent marriage ( her ring felt heavy on her finger ), but it was worth a shot. 

               — “ hello, dear cousin, ” she kept her tone smooth, though her voice wanted to shake. these were the people her family was fighting to destroy. children who still looked silly and gangly in dress robes. it was saddening. “ how have you been ? ”

               --- narcissa’s thoughts on one severus snape were not the highest. the young man, while being a key part of everything her family was fighting for, was not somebody she deemed trustworthy. his years-long friendship with the well-known muggleborn lily evans made her question his loyalty to the cause he was serving ( although she was in no place to question his allegiances when she was, at this point, unsure of her own ). lucius seemed to trust him, though, which meant she would have to as well. that wouldn’t make her feign excitement when he approached her, though. she did her best to smile, raising her flute of champagne to him before taking a small sip.

               --- “ you look . . . well, severus. ” she would have gone with handsome, but she didn’t want to lie. “ are you enjoying the party so far ? ” a strand of blonde hair was soon tucked behind her ear by gloved fingers as she saw lucius standing only a few meters away. she would have to indulge this boy in conversation for his sake. “ the decor is simply lovely if you ask me. ”

               --- sadly, being from a prominent family, narcissa was unable to decline her invitation to the ministry ball. she had been far from interested in going, preferring to spend new years eve at the home of her sister rather than in public and surrounded by order members no less. the night had barely begun, and she was a glimmering pillar in the corner of the massive ballroom, nursing a flute of champagne to hopefully make the night easier. she preferred people-watching over socializing any day. however, at functions like this where eyes were always on you, drifting around the outskirts of the party was frowned upon, so narcissa searched the crowd for a familiar face. someone she could talk to without feeling forced. when icy blues landed on isabella flume, she nodded to herself before making her way over to the other blonde.

               --- “ isabella, ” she purred, a soft grin etching it’s way onto her lips, “ i should have known you would be here. the flumes not being invited to a society function would just be scandalous. ”

   — – They were expected to have kids. To procreate, as Bellatrix liked to call it, further the ( disappointing ) Black family line by filling their stomachs with the children of men with good surnames. She was nauseous at the thought, was glad that she’d decided to never put life on this earth ( she preferred ending it, either way ), but wondered if Narcissa felt the same. She thought of herself as an aunt – a laughable thought, honestly, but not a too bad one ( she would like to spoil the kid and be a bad influence ) – and let it go as quick as it came up. “Oh, I don’t know what I’ll do with myself when it starts to snow. Probably set the garden on fire, just so it doesn’t make the grounds slippery,” she says, shaking her head. “What’s the next shop on our list, then?”

               --- it was a miraculous occurrence that the youngest black had been capable of convincing her older sister to shop with her. especially in london, surrounded by muggles that had a tendency to make both their skin crawl ( narcissa was trying to break from that mindset, but it was hard to associate them with anything other than vermin ). unable to use their magic or even take out their wands was an odd sensation, but there was something a little freeing about it. here, they weren’t the well-known daughters of cygnus and druella black. they were simply sisters shopping for the day. “ i need to find something for lucius. ” there was no excitement in narcissa’s tone. she had no idea what to get for him. she barely even knew him. if anything, bellatrix knew him better from the countless meetings the two attended together. “ i was hoping you could help me ... you may have a better idea than i on what he fancies, as pathetic as that is. ”

Slipping away unnoticed by her children was not an easy task, and she was forever grateful to her husband for being the buffer. A last minute gift idea for the children had struck her and she couldn’t tell that to them. She also didn’t want to lie. It wasn’t a good lesson to teach. Her cloak was pulled tight around her as she navigated the chilly streets. It was hard to hide her initial smile at noticing Narcissa. The young woman was like a sister to her and she wanted to greet her warmly with an embrace, but she knew better. They were on opposite sides of a war and acting otherwise could put them both in danger. She settled for a polite smile and soft-spoken hello. It didn’t take much to determine something was bothering her, but it wasn’t the place for Celia to ask what it was. “Are you out by yourself?”

               --- narcissa was not used to running into celia on crowded public streets. usually, they would meet in muggle london ( the young blonde was beginning to feel less uncomfortable with the notion of being surrounded by muggles. it was still strange but it was getting easier ) where it was harder for them to be caught by the eyes that were normally all around them. but now, they were in dangerous territory. soldiers on different sides of a war that were supposed to be sworn enemies. if anybody saw mrs. malfoy mingling with a halfblood order member ... it would spell trouble for both women. however, she could get away with being pleasant. after all, that was how you treated other people in public. “ i am, ” she told her, a soft but nervous smile pulling at her lips, “ doing some last minute holiday shopping. i have two families to purchase gifts for now, so i have to dedicate more time to it than i normally do. ”

– When you grow up in a household like the Malfoy’s, you don’t look forward to many things, but growing up and getting married was probably the biggest thing in Lucius’ life. He never expected it to be as big of an ordeal as it turned out to be though. Everyone was involved, papers were on it, pictures were taken, it felt way too big of an ordeal than he really wanted it to be- and Narcissa gave on that exact same vibe most of the time. Only, that vibe had worn off for Lucius. The jitters had gone and now he was married to this shockingly beautiful pureblood woman and everything was fine. There weren’t any fights, any unfair blows or anything to go against- well him actually. But it was very clear that those feelings were the quite opposite for his wife. The novelty, the fear the very clear feeling of being uncomfortable and Lucius was just dying to figure out why. 

– Her expression softened and Malfoy found himself letting out a deep breath of relief when it did. His smile became clearer and softer and his shoulders relaxed, holding themselves up instead of hunching and hovering over her small frame. “Well- yes. Its less than a week from Christmas dear.” He chuckled, his words coming out demeaning without even realizing it. So, he didn’t even bother on correcting his tone. Her touch shocked him for a second and he wasn’t sure how to respond, and so he stood there. Frozen, completely unfazed by her touch for a moment- looking like a dumb struct statue. Blinking a couple times, he finally processed what she said and nodded, resetting his face so it wasn’t cold and stiff. “Actually- uhm. Yeah.” He nodded, that rambling somehow turning into an agreement to go to the shop with her. He adjusted her hand so it was wrapped in his- the touch unfamiliar and almost uncomfortable. But they were in public and they had to put on quite the show. “Have you done any more shopping other than your main quest?” He pondered, sounding much too formal for the occasion as they started walking forward. 

                --- narcissa couldn’t help but wonder if lucius was capable of forming a sentence without sounding condescending. whether it was purposeful or not, it was off putting for her in a multitude of ways. she had spent a majority of her life being spoken to in that fashion --- as if she were lesser. for being a girl. for being the youngest. for not being as beautiful as her sisters. and now, regardless of whether it was his intention, her husband was unpacking all of those feelings and splaying them out in her mind. it would have been more fair of her to give him the benefit of the doubt --- after all, why would he wish to make her uncomfortable on purpose ? --- but that had never been her strong suit. as empathetic as she had to capacity to be, a select few people were recipients of that. he wasn’t one of those people yet. she wasn’t sure if he ever would be. his fingers laced through hers unexpectedly and had she been a touch more dramatic than she was, a gasp may have left her. instead, her mouth opened, forming a silent o, as her eyes flickered to his for a moment before meeting the ground as they began to walk. she shook her head, raising her chin again. walking with her gaze to the pavement was not her. she was regal, a pureblood princess as she had been affectionately referred to. narcissa black had always walked with head high regardless of her situation. narcissa malfoy would do the same, even as her heart pounded like a gong in her chest.

               --- she turned to him as he spoke, “ i haven’t yet. ” she replied simply, words accented by a small drop of the shoulders. “ i’ve been a bit off kilter with my shopping traditions lately. having recently moved and all ... ” realizing that her statement may seem a bit harsh ( after all, marrying him was the reason for her relocation ) she rerouted her sentence. “ i’m just used to being pestered by my mother in late november about christmas gifts and surprisingly she didn’t remind me in a letter as i had expected. time got away from me, i suppose. i have a few other stops to make after the perfume shop, though i won’t drag you along and bore you if you’re uninterested. ” meaning : this is strange and i’m used to shopping alone. having you here will make me second guess gift choices that i would normally be set on, and i don’t need the added pressure of buying the perfect gifts for your immediate family. her eyes landed on him for another brief second as they reached their destination, her keeping his hand in hers as she opened the door. “ i may be able to find a few things in here and get more of my shopping done in one place. ”

– Married and in love were two very different things in Lucius’ life- though he didn’t realize this would be the case when he was informed about the marriage he would have to the youngest Black. When told, he didn’t truly know what it meant in a political stance. Yes, they were both very old pure family members and yes it made sense, he guessed- but it wasn’t until the dark lord started rising and it was very clear what side Lucius should be on, that he realized this marriage could cover up everything that he needed covered up. 

– He didn’t mean for the question to come off as - ‘ protective ‘ as it originally sounded, but there was no way to take it back and no way make it up to her. She looked alarmingly uncomfortable. Something he was used to seeing at home, if he ever saw her in general. But it was hard to take in public with people watching. He offered a soft laugh and shoved his free hand into his other pocket and tried to keep himself as light as possible. “I guess I know to scratch that off my list for you then, yeah?” Honestly, Lucius had no idea what kind of perfume his wife wore let alone planned on buying it for her. “Yes- We just got out. Good things are happening darling, good things are happening.” He sighed, his smile a little purer as he looked down at her- wanting her to offer him even something. 

               --- part of her appreciated him for trying. after all, she wasn’t the easiest person to love. she was distant, reclusive, cold even. and it wasn’t that she wanted to be that way, either. but she had fears that she didn’t want to admit for the risk of appearing weak. she didn’t want to be weak, and if saving herself that embarrassment meant never truly showing lucius who she was, then that was the life she was left with. she felt guilty; it was easy to tell he would be happier with somebody else. anybody else. it was most likely unlucky chance on his end that paired them together, and she hoped that she wasn’t totally ruining his life. however it was plain to see in all his efforts that he wanted something different ( not that she didn’t want it . . . she did. she had always wanted a family of her own. just . . . not like this ).

               --- blue eyes brightened a tad. “ your . . . list ? ” she tried to hide any semblance of excitement from coming through in her tone. though excitement may not have been the best word. it made her feel nice, though. knowing he was thinking of her. ( sarcasm was not her best area, and she definitely thought he was being serious despite the awkward laugh that crowned the statement ). the way his entire demeanor changed as he talked about the meeting sent a shiver up her spine that made her forget the pleasant feeling she had only moments before. of course she knew how lucius felt about it all. he was, after all, a malfoy. but sometimes she would forget. but they couldn’t stand on the street like this any longer, looking like strangers. so she reached out and touched his arm gently, fingers running down the fabric of his jacket. “ i am glad. you’ll have to tell me about it if you’re allowed to . . . ” should she invite him to the shop with her ? it seemed like the best idea. “ would you care to come with me ? to the shop, i mean . . . if you would prefer just heading home that’s quite alright too, i thought i would just . . . ” breathe. he’s your husband not a monster. you look like a bumbling fool. “ offer. in case. ”

a look to the right side, a look to the left side. edgar was SURROUNDED; no way out. he was absolutely surrounded by the pleas of the nine year old boy clinging to his left hand, and the six year old girl with her palms pressed against the glass of the shop window; a snow white kitten peacefully resting among others on the floor of the shop the wizard had made the extraordinary mistake of passing. he could feel the firmness with which his previous NO was filled fading at the unfair pleading, though before any more words utilized the chance to come out, the voice of cecily, his daughter, turned to the person lingering nearby. “ tell m’ dad to buy me a kitty ?? pleeaase ?? “

               --- the blonde had been looking at the kitten herself. though she wasn’t the biggest fan of cats, dionysus seemed lonely ( and she wouldn’t admint that she was as well ) and it seemed like a friend was in order for him and her. he was, after all, still a puppy. he would have time to adjust to the kitten. perhaps even become friends. her fingers were stroking the glass lightly as she got lost in her thoughts staring at the fluffy little creature. she was interrupted, though, by the SMACK of flesh hitting glass and the whining voice of a child. her heart cinched immediately. steely blue eyes looked down to see a small girl staring with attentive gaze at the kitten. her first smile in weeks. her heart did something strange again as the little girl looked at her, and for a moment she didn’t care that she recognized her father as a blood traitor. what she cared about was the happiness of the child. she cleared her throat.

               --- “ i don’t know how you could say no to a face like that . . . ” she said, corners of her mouth turning up just slightly as she addressed edgar. she looked at him briefly, before she knelt down a little, so she was closer in level to the little girl. “ you know, i was going to get that kitty, as a friend for my puppy. but, it seems as though she likes you much more. ”

     — – It was ironic, really, that Bellatrix was here, critiquing other parents. She was nothing close to parent material herself, after all — she feared having kids, in all truth — and had no experience with good parents, but she would not be herself, should she not critique everything she laid eyes on. “I just don’t see why they would risk it, in this political climate,” she said, voice filled with mocked concern, still, as if she didn’t at all contribute to this mess herself. “And they’re quite annoying, too.” She paused, gave her sister a bit of a smile. “But at least the weather isn’t too bad, hmm?”

               --- narcissa loved children. they were one of the few things that brought her joy anymore. if she had it her way ( which she didn’t, never would . . . but she could dream ) she would already be preparing herself for gaggles of adorable little babies. however, with her current relationship status ( see : married but not in love enough to risk bringing children into the world ) that didn’t seem to be a likely outcome for her. brows furrowed at bella’s choice of words . . . quite annoying, but she quickly let her expression change to a more pleasant one. eyes looked to the sky; cloudless, though that always brought a chill with it come december. she turned to her sister, nodding. “ it is a bit chilly, but at least it isn’t raining. or worse yet, snowing. ”

– Lucius had seen her probably from the moment she had made it onto the street, but it still took everything in his power not to run up to her and figure out what the hell she was doing. Actually- he probably had a pretty good guess but that wasn’t the point. She was shocking though and he would never truly get over that and he hoped he never did. He leaned against the wall for a second, taking in the entirety of his wife as she walked down the street, looking so intent to just get to her destination without a hitch, or a conversation to stop her. Of course he would- right? He would have to. If people saw him , and people were quite obviously saw her, but they didn’t see they at least slightly interact- things would be whispered and Lucius had a suspicion that was what Narcissa was trying to stop. 

– Finally, as if mustering up the courage to talk to his own wife- Lucius crossed her path and slowly offered her the kindest smile he could. “Narcissa,” He started, shoving a hand roughly into his back pocket and the other hastily rubbing the back of his neck, as if there was an argument brewing and he just wanted to get out o the dog house. “What’re you doing out?” 

                --- using strange as a descriptor for narcissa and lucius’ relationship would be an understatement. they were married, yes ( though narcissa had gotten no say in the matter ), but there was an absence of love that was glaringly obvious. had it not been for both of them being fantastic in public, everybody would be able to tell. her stature straightened, taking a bit more of a defensive stance than the elegant one she normally opted for. he was smiling at her but it didn’t ease her nerves, nor make her fists unclench. he looked as awkward as she felt. there was no script for this. they hadn’t previously decided what they would say to one another ( which they occasionally did before public events and outings that needed to be tackled together ) and it had narcissa at a loss for words.

               --- “ darling, ” she tried to relax her facial expression slightly. forced her hands out of her pockets so they rested flat at her sides. it was unknown whether he was questioning her out of concern or because she hadn’t told him she was going anywhere. the damaged part of her brain wanted to say the second option, regardless of whether it was true. “ i’m out of perfume. i’ve come to fetch some more and do a bit of christmas shopping. ” it wasn’t a lie necessarily, but an exaggeration of the truth. “ i wasn’t expecting to run into you ... you had a meeting today, did you not ? ”
