Pathetic, right? I know it, brother. Iām sorry for it. Shit, Iām sorry for all of it.
Itās the best we could find ā the best they could find. The kids, I mean. I couldnātāve found my own two feet when they eventually managed to wake me. The room swelled into focus and everything was doubled, everything swaying side to side, all violent like.
I could hardly string a sentence together. My head felt heavy with blood, hearing still shot to hell. The first thing I did was look for you.
And oh, Jesus, Joel, did I see you.
I spat the words out in a sob. Be careful with him, I said. I couldnāt get to my feet quick enough; couldnāt reach you with my shaking hands. Thatās my goddamn brother, you hear?
Heās my brother.
They found an old pallet and made a sled out of it. We tied it to Old Beardyās breastplate and let him lead you home. Figured the old timerās used to the weight of you by now, right?
He kept shaking his head the whole way, kept huffing these deep, achy breaths. Iād never heard him do that before ā none of us had. Like he was in pain, almost. I donāt know if horses know grief like we do, Joel, but it sure seemed like he knew. He justā¦knew.
The gray lump of you jolted and jerked behind him. The more I looked, the more I felt like throwing up, and still ā I couldnāt look away from you.
The shape of your head ā this crimson bloom where your skull had been broken. Square shoulders, sturdy chest. Long legs and boots still laced ā the way you once taught me. Make bunny ears, twist āem around each other. Yeah, just like that. Now, pull.
Tall frame, protective frame. Used to plant yourself between me and anything you thought might hurt me. Used to wrestle with me in the backyard, stomach my damn windmill punches like they were nothing.
Man, I donāt know how you ever taught me to throw a half-decent one, but you did. Mom would call us inside and youād pat my back and say good job, little brother.
Good job. What kinda fucking job did I do this time, huh? When it mattered? Where was I, when my brother needed me most?
On my goddamn ass, thatās where. Blacked out. I couldnāt get to you, no matter how hard I tried.
I tried, Joel. I swear to you, I tried.
It was all of it, all at once. The blizzard, the woman, the room ā Christ, that room. So much blood I felt it lining the inside of my lungs. So much that I can still smell it, taste it, like itās become me. Like everything I look at is tinged red; the color of rust, the color of rage.
The room, where I became just the one. Lost something in my sleep. Hit the ground with a heavy thud, swam back to the surface to find I was short. Something taken. Something stolen.
And Iāve been without you before, Joel, but at least I always got to give you a piece of my mind on the way out.
You remember summer camp, that year I was real homesick? I donāt know what it was. Maybe just knowing you were all those miles away. You remember I wrote you about a hundred times? Jesus. I know youāre laughing, too.
I spent that whole summer with a smile pinned to my face. Counting down the days. Iād turn over in my sleeping bag, pick at the skin on my thumbs and wonder what you were up to. Wonder if you were missing me as much. Wonder if youād thought about me at all that day.
Well, here I am. Wondering much the same.
I miss you, Joel. I donāt know what to do with that. There aināt no bus home at the end of this; no big brother and his dirt bike waiting for me in Austin. Itās only been a week, I know that ā but my ears wonāt stop ringing, and I havenāt stopped looking for you.
It wakes me at night. This pain in my chest, like Iām swimming for that surface over and over, and all I ever do is drown. I wake saying your name. The doctors say itās just bad dreams, just part of the process, but I know what it really is. Iām calling on you, and you never come.
Itās about damn time I realized you aināt never gonna come. Youāre never coming back. Not to me, not to this place. Youāre on a path I canāt follow, brother. Weāre on our own from here on out.
Goddamn it, Joel. Why the hellād it have to be you?
Maybe if weād gone a different route that day. Maybe if weād spent a little longer in the stables. We were tryna outrun the weather, sure, but we couldāve spared a few minutes. Shit, I wouldāve spared anything, if it meant Iād still have my brother.
Sunās coming up over the mountains. I better get going. Got a mighty long journey ahead of me. Iāll make things right, Joel, I swear.
