I may have found what flower Ildio was holding...

This flower is Ornithogalum umbellatum commonly known as star of Bethlehem

These flowers are native to the Mediterranean (assuming that Ildio was in Rome or anywhere from Italy back when he was a human, this would make sense).

The star of Bethlehem symbolizes innocence, purity and hope (which matches with the small girl that gave Ildio the flower).

It is also often tied in with the birth of Jesus Christ, the incarnation of God the Son (which also matches with World End's given name by Nico "Ildio" meaning "the God" in Italian). According to the legend, God created the Star of Bethlehem to guide the three wise men to the baby Jesus. After the star’s purpose was completed, God thought it to be too beautiful to banish, so he instead crushed it into millions of pieces, after which it descended to the earth and gave birth to the Star of Bethlehem flower.

Ooh! Also, other symbolisms of the flower is of atonement, forgiveness and reconciliation. I guess it also symbolizes how Nico and Ildio will soon reconcile!

Why you don’t write comments on AO3 and how to start?

You should write comments because fandom needs to support our creators. But it’s not that easy, and a lot, statistically, most of the readers don’t do it.

I asked around, and fandom people have common reasons not to leave comments on fics. Some of the reasons are valid, some not so much, but if you want, you can overcome them.

Let’s examine the most popular of those reasons and look for solutions.

What if the author doesn’t want it?

I’m in fandoms for more than a decade. I write fics myself. I talk with authors, and no one, not a single author, had ever told me that they don’t like (appropriate) comments.

Everyone with whom I discussed it agreed that they adore comments, and getting comments notifications highlights their day.

There might be authors who disagree with that, but for them, ao3 has useful features — “turn off comment” and “moderate comments”.

I’m shy / socially anxious

I know, me too. I was scared so much that my first comments full of love and gratitude I left anonymously.

As with most of the things, you can start small. If you are afraid, just leave emojis - 💖  or 😍 works nice. Alternatively, you can search for kawaii emojis.

I got a string of hearts a few times and was thrilled.

Another non-verbal way is to leave img or gif instead of a comment. For that, you need to add HTML snipped <img src=“ling-to-your-img-or-gif”>

To overcome your fear, set a goal and increase it: Leave just one word — Thanks! or Great! Leave just one phrase - Wonderful chapter ;) Write at least 10 nice words — Thank you for this {nice/interesting/hot/excited} {chapter/work}. I had a great time reading it. — That’s it.

Start small and move at your own speed.

Just say politely, what you liked about the fic.

Did you like the plot?

Say, “I like the plot. The story was {unexpected/thrilling/emotional}”

Did you like the characters?

“I like how you depicted character A. They were very {in character/relatable/realistic/hot/romantic/}

Did you like smut?

Well, say that too “The story was hot/passionate/kinky”

Describe how the fic makes you feel.

Were you sad? Happy? Scared?

Maybe you enjoyed the wording, how the author describes that one particular tree, the atmosphere, or style?

Mention everything you admire about that work.

It can be one word, one phrase, or a full essay, just do it, and you’ll improve the author’s day.

As soon as I learned that the Italian phase behind Ildio and Niccolo was from Dante's "Divine Comedy", I slapped myself for not looking to see if it matched one of most famous collection of Italian poems xd I was focused on Latin terms because of Niccolo's "Carpe Diem".

I looked deeper into the poem and where exactly the lines fall within the poem. Dante's "Divine Comedy" are separated into three cantiche/poems. This line is from the first part ("Inferno") where the soul takes a journey to find God by recognizing and rejecting sin. Niccolo did name Ildio which means "a god" so it's quite fitting.

Getting more specific, the line is said before Dante passes through the Gate of Hell and the nine circles. The third circle of Hell (Gluttony) depicts a political strife and compares gluttony to the "thirst for power". This makes me think of Niccolo's flashback where he stopped the conflict between a mafia family and his own. He solved it in an unconventional way to stop further bloodshed on both sides.

It's always so cool to see these allusions Tanaka fits into the story.

ildio's whole thing with "every food tastes the same to me" seems psychological, a reflection of his attitude towards his eves

ofc, he seems to view nicco differently, since he didn't kill nicco we can assume that unlike with the other eves ildio actually has an expectation for nicco, but neither of them are aware of it

but that also means it's entirely possible for ildio to regain his sense of taste (and probably smell too) as his relationship with nicco develops and rehabilitates his uncaring attitude

and for someone who ended up tasting everything for the first time ever in his centuries of years of immortal life? he'll probably end up a very picky eater

Realizing Kuro's (and all the other servamps who voted to kill Saint Germaine) attitude and view towards Germaine is directly connected to how and when they got turned into Servamps.

Kuro, a young shepherd living in likely the only village that would take him in was killed by their lord. He accepts his death as something necessary, as something for the better as it ended a conflict that would severely affect the village people. He loved the village as the second ever family he's ever had.

Kuro's horrified to find himself not only alive but no longer a human being capable of death. He's scared and he runs back to where his village should be but instead finds nothing but a crater of ash with no life in sight. I wouldn't be surprised if to the canon day, live refuses to grow there (although i do hope that Kuro's "birthplace" has been overwhelmed with life actually).

Not only was his death for nothing, all of the people he cared about died in a single day just to make him into a monster.

He hates Saint Germaine for it.

But look at Hyde!

We know now that as a human he was a lower prince killed by those above him. He strived to be good and better but in the end, he was killed and cast aside like nothing. He wanted a second chance, he wanted to LIVE.

He wakes up with Guildenstern and Germaine at his side, no longer human enough to be tormented by death any longer with the people who killed him dead just to complete this goal.

He's grateful, happy. He's joyous that he can live and live properly even if he was now a Servamp.

He thinks of Germaine as the father he never had, begs to stay with him but reluctantly leaves to find his "oldest brother" when the Saint tells him he can't.

Their "births" are also why Kuro never saw the other Servamps as family and why Hyde had from the very start.

The next time Licht shows up, his nails are painted and he orders a latte macchiato. Hyde prepares the drink for him and hands it over. Licht’s nail polish is black and white, not unlike piano keys. His nails have grown too, a sign that he hasn’t played in a while.

Licht doesn’t look up from his drink. 

“I wrote my phone number on there,” Hyde says. “You might want to call if you want to talk.”

Licht’s fingers spell out, O-K.

The first time Hyde encounters the phrase is long before he met Licht. He picks it up somewhere, London, if he remembers correctly. Someone is passing by, speaking into a phone, loud enough for him to hear, “Okay, so if your friends jumped off a cliff, you’d jump too?”

Hyde doesn’t catch the reply to this, and he supposes that it does not truly matter anyway. There is no correct answer to this, as far as he can tell. It’s a hypothetical. Nobody is actually jumping off any cliffs.  .

There is a German equivalent to this phrase which loosely translates to “if your friend jumps out of a window, would you jump after them?”. It sparks a sense of admiration in Hyde, who has lived long enough to fall in love with languages and the way they change, spread, inspire each other. 

He quickly learns that that phrase stopped being a hypothetical the second he met Licht. His Eve is not just the most talented piano player he has ever met in his life, he is also a lot more reckless than anyone ever wants to give him credit for. Hyde is, of course, immensely amused by and attracted to this, at least as long as he still views Licht as discardable, as replaceable. 

This, too, changes. 

And Hyde notices a lot too late that it might be a problem. 

Licht is human and he is an angel. Those two things make sense inside his Eve’s mind, so they don’t have to make sense to him. In a way, Hyde does understand, just enough to become part of it. Licht was an angel long before his Lead gave him the illusion that he could fly. He’s good at using those boots. Which isn’t the problem, at least not initially. It becomes part of the problem when Licht starts jumping off things. 

The first time he launches himself off a balcony, Hyde feels a stinging sensation in his chest, right where his heart would be if he were human. He practically throws himself into position to catch his Eve, which Licht reacts to with confusion. 

“Why did you catch me? I’m an angel.”

“You’re human too,” Hyde reminds him. 

“And you’re a demon, so stop touching me.”

The problem, Hyde realizes then or way before then or way after that, is that he loves Licht. He loves him, not the way he loves Ophelia, but the way that makes him think that soulmates are not found but made, and that love isn’t a chance you lose once and never get again. He doesn’t fully have words for all of it until years later but the feeling is there. 

He does the only thing he can. He catches his Eve. Over and over again. They figure out a way to include this into their fighting style. With time, Licht learns the limitations of his Lead and his own humanity. And Hyde doesn’t wait to praise himself too much here but he thinks that they might actually be a very good team. It makes him happy. 

Like all good things in his life, that happiness vanishes before he can fully grasp it.  .

Their contract item breaks. Licht can’t conjure his Lead anymore. 

Hyde is sure that, intellectually, Licht understands the consequences of this. 

And yet, his Eve throws himself out of a window with the confidence of someone who… Hyde actually isn’t sure about his reasoning, nor has he time to think about it. (He does wonder, later, as he receives a very quiet, very shaken “thank you” from the person Licht dragged with him: What was going on inside Licht’s head? Did he forget what happened? Was he too caught up in his own world? Or, and that is the worst one of all, did he trust Hyde to catch him?)

It doesn’t matter. It shouldn’t matter. 

If Licht jumped out of a window, would Hyde follow him?

Absolutely, he would.  .

.

The first time someone actually says the phrase to him, it’s Crantz who does it. He says it with a hint of sarcasm that would be lost on Licht but Hyde can tell. Besides, he is familiar with the phrase by now. 

“You don’t have to support every single stupid thing Licht suggests,” Crantz says when Hyde immediately agrees with Licht that he should wear his angel backpack to a formal event because nobody can stop him. And then Crantz adds under his breath, “Wenn er aus dem Fenster springt, springst du dann hinterher, oder was?”  

“You’re making this sound a lot more hypothetical than it is,” Hyde replies cheerfully. 

“Excuse me?”

Hyde sighs and meets the man’s eyes. “To answer your question, of course I would.”

Crantz eyes flicker over to Licht who is looking down on his phone and collecting the log-in bonus for the game he is currently obsessed with. If Hyde had to guess, he’d say that Licht mentally signed off this conversation about five minutes ago. 

“Licht?” Crantz asks very gently but obviously on the verge of losing it a little. (Hyde will make sure that he will regret asking that question, not because he takes offense in it but because it’s hilarious and worth the holy water gun he senses at the end of this.) 

Licht looks up from his phone. 

“Licht, is that true?”

“It’s not always a window,” Hyde says, helpfully. Just in case, he turns into a hedgehog because he can feel the holy water coming. 

“What do you mean it’s not always a window?” Crantz asks very slowly. He’s losing his patience. 

Got him, Hyde things. “Well, Lichtlein is an angel. What else do you expe-”

“Licht,” Crantz interrupts him. 

Licht chews his lip, obviously considering whether speaking is worth it right now or not. He ends up saying, “It was the only option. I am an angel. Besides…”

At that he looks at Hyde, who still hasn’t gotten used to the way Licht’s eyes feel on him when he has his Eve’s full attention.  

“Hyde is always there to catch me. It’s fine.”

Hyde gets sprayed with holy water first, which he considers very unfair because all he did was try to save Licht. He tries to explain as much as Crantz fires at him, and it seems to work because the human turns the spray gun towards Licht instead who eyes it with faint curiosity. Hyde can tell that the only reason Licht doesn’t get water in his face is the phone still resting on his lap. 

“You are grounded,” Crantz says with the voice of someone who is trying not to kill someone right now. “Both of you. I am starting to miss that coma.”

“I’m pretty sure I can find someone to arrange another one for y-” Hyde starts, and when Crantz fires another load of holy water at him, he can’t even complain because yes, he deserved that.

The way you write Licht and Hyde is absolutely beautiful and so freaking accurate, like, for example, with the narration I feel like I'm listening to a transcript of Hyde's actual inner monologue while reading! (And of course he's being super dramatic about everything XD)

How you write Licht is also just so...real. I don't have any words for it, except that: he's an angel. So he just does what he does and other people will have to deal with it. Idk how to explain it, but it just feels so honest and i love it.

They are both so in character i am actually losing my mind!!

Also, poor Crantz who has to deal with these idiots, he needs an actual vacation or something because that coma can't have been relaxing

On the topic of his coma: the line at the end where Hyde suggests he can arrange another coma for Crantz had me on the floor XD (I do sometimes forget what kind of a menace he can be)

Btw, i can't believe how you managed to turn this crack-y little concept into this awesome (still funny) display of how much they care for each other and trust each other but you did and it's beautiful!!

I just love this so much! You gave me everything i had hoped for and so much more so thank you again!!

THINKING ABOUT THE GERMAN SAYING FOR TEACHERS/PARENTS:

"Und wenn dein Freund aus dem Fenster springt, springst du dann hinterher?"

(Which, in English i believe they use the phrase: "If your friend jumped off a bridge, would you jump after them?" BUT in German they use window instead of bridge which is important!!)

And the children are supposed to answer 'no' or rather, it's a rhetorical question that's supposed to make you aware that you should make your own decisions and not blindly follow someone else etc. BUT WE ALL KNOW THAT

NOW what i wanted to say is that we LITERALLY IN CANON have Hyde jumping off a building to save his boyfriend and his brother in law just because Licht decided to jump out of that window

(aside from that, if that didn't happen in canon i still believe Hyde to be the type to answer 'yes' to that question anyway to piss off the authority figures in his life (and also bc he's the type to actually do it lmao))

SO I PROPOSE: Crantz (or Guil) asking Licht and Hyde that question (I think it'd be funnier if Crantz did it bc he would likely do it in German and he also doesn't know about what happened at the hotel yet):

"Wenn Licht aus einem Fenster springt, springst du dann auch hinterher oder was??!" (TL: "If Licht jumped out of a window, would you jump after him??!")

And then Hyde looks at Licht and they both burst out laughing

"Yes, i quite literally did that"

And then Crantz almost has a heart attack when they tell him what happened while he was in a coma and he grounds them both lmao

Also, Guil just guilty staring at the floor during the entire exchange because he didn't wanna break the news to Crantz bc he JUST woke up from that coma and none of them wanted to worry him
