I'm trying to remember if my parents (last one died during the Obama years) were ever as mortally terrified about elections as I've felt for the vast majority of my adult life.

I know my aunt was horrified by the Nixon years. But she's never expressed that it was the "grave mortal peril" sense that we seem to live with now.
