#StPaddysDay Parliament St. Kilkenny by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Via Flickr: Parliament Street in Kilkenny is one of the last photographs for this week. Tall buildings with a selection of ladders, tall, medium and small, a donkey with churns on the cart and children to put a smile on our faces! Apart from the men with the ladder (believed perhaps to be associated to the "S Costelloe Builder" signage seen closeby), much of today's conversation focused on the date range for this Lawrence Collection image. In particular, though the catalogue range implies a date of c.1880-1900, based on the businesses, buildings and (in particular) posters visible, we're actually probably looking at a scene from c.1903-1909. Our eagle-eyed contributors highlight a news poster outside Power's stationers. It seems to refer to a "Universities Bill", which is probably the bill which was passed to become the 1908 Universities Act.... What's good for the Goose is good for the Gander. by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Via Flickr: A lovely shot of an "Irish cabin" from Mr. French. The use of the word cabin to describe a dwelling in Ireland has almost disappeared over the years since this photo was taken. I suppose nobody wanted to live in a cabin unless it was aboard a fancy ship, cruiser or aircraft. That point aside, the Marys had a long chat about this photo yesterday and we are as one (which seldom happens) in our view that you have no chance of finding the location of this half thatched half slated rural home. People posing and perambulators parked in People’s Park by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Via Flickr: This beautiful Lawrence Royal plate of the Spring Rice Memorial in the People’s Park in Limerick is today’s offering. The wonderful lady hat in the foreground, is matched by those of the two ladies posing on the slope with their perambulators, while children stand and sit behind them. In former, more innocent times, children would lie down and roll down those slopes for the sensation of becoming dizzy and being “drunk”!
