With a laugh, Chloe gave the dog a scruffly scratch behind the ears, then followed Ben into the kitchen. âLook, I know nothing about wine,â she said with a roll of her eyes, âI just grabbed something from my momâs stash.â Sheâd done so with permission; she chided herself that she even cared about that fact. A raise of her brow at the glass Ben handed her, a smirk on her lips, she chuckled, âI see this is an original Fitzherbert.â Indeed, his sloppy scrawl was visible across the side, and she wrinkled her nose slightly at the strong fermented smell.
Sitting on his couch, Chloe bounced a little bit, unable to contain her excitement. âWell, remember I told you itâs Chicago? Well, one of the lead roles is Roxy Hart - a 1920s jazz singer hopeful hoping to become a celebrity⊠but then she shoots her lover and ends up in prison, so the whole musical takes place there. Have you seen the movie? We should watch the movie.â She sipped at her wine, then sat her glass down. âOkay, I forgot how much I donât like wine,â she laughed. âMaybe I should have brought wine coolers instead?â
âIâm not gonna say you should have buuuut,â he too tried a sip of it. A bitter liquid that somehow translated as DRY. Ben wasnât loving it.Â
He shook his head no as he mulled over the concept of the musical. Ben had never found the time or attention span to sit down and watch the movie adaptation. Whatever the hell this was, it sounded WILD. Maybe he could get in to it. âYou shoot your lover and go to PRISON? Chloe! What the hell kind of musical did you sign up for?!âÂ
Ben took the cups and dumped the remainder of the wine they didnât drink down the drain. âDo you think we should just dump the whole bottle? Is your mom gonna be... upset if I do?â Ben asked, knowing how uptight her parents could be about things. âProbably best not to be skating around with an open bottle of old grape juice anyways.â He waited no longer as he drained the bottle down the sink. "Ten doll hairs well spent. Letâs go out instead. Maybe weâll see the uh--â he waved his hand in hopes sheâd remember. âYou know WHO. Tall, dark, skeevy.âÂ
Ben poked her shoulder like an annoying brother. âCome on, Iâll buy.â An offer that would have him scraping by until his next paycheck, but he wanted to congratulate her on a job well done. âHave you heard from your creeper?â
Two Tone Army - The Toasters
Reeling with excitement, Chloe headed thru the halls of her best friendâs apartment building, wanting to surprise him with the great news. When she reached his door, she knocked quickly, bouncing on her heels as she waited for him to crack the door. When he finally did, her heart pounding and a grin spread across her face, she raised up the bottle of wine she held in her left hand.
âGuess who got the part?âÂ
The knock on the door, the bottle of wine, a more than happy face behind it all: he knew what this was. Ben responded nearly synced with her âYOU GOT THE PART? Oh my god I knew it! All that rehearsing paid off, huh? Come on in, holy shitâOtto,â he said as the friendly snout of a dog poked through his legs to greet Chloe. A dog who would have gladly let in any old baddie, under the pretense of getting pet.
âSorry he has no MANNERS, apparently,â Ben said and shook his head, gladly ushering her inside. âThatâs awesome! I knew you were gonna get it,â Ben trailed off as he looked for wine glassesâ a piece of glassware he didnât ever think to buy. A plastic cup with some old cartoon on it would have to suffice. âIs this that grape juice you give to kids on New Yearâs Eve?â He glanced over the label, noting it didnât have any mention of grapes on the front. âNot a Welchâs fan myselfâŠâ he said, as though a connoisseur of the finer things. And that⊠he was not.
âIs that a foot on the label? What are you drinkinâ woman?â Ben teased her, as he showcased the Barefoot wine--the only brand of wine his Aunt Gayle would drink. Who knew why. âI donât have any wine glasses, so hereâs uh... a cup from Riderâs imagination,â he offered it to her. Without a corkscrew handy, he riddled around in the drawer, found a steak knife and used some ungodly strength to pry the cork out of there. As he poured them both a drink, himself he only gave a dash of the wine, they went to sit down. âSo tell me about the character youâre playing!â

Kuzco didnât know the other man too well yet, their brief interactions were usually⊠well, rushed. Ben did most of the talking and as hurried and nervous as most it was, Kuzco listened. Most of the time. Sometimes his thoughts did start to wander, his inner voice known as his e g o would make comments, willing it to stay quiet in most of his interactions he had with other people. But weirdly, around Ben, it was mostly silent. Mostly.
If he had any passing thoughts with Ben, they were gone pretty quickly, and superficial at the surface. Otherwise, silence, as he took in the otherâs appearance and mannerisms all while trying to keep up with the others racing thoughts and opinions.
Ben made him feel close to one hundred years old, their first meeting particularly when they went for a hike, Ben basically unaffected while Kuzco, who regularly worked out, was huffing and puffing by the end. He may have well been ancient.
Still, his presence had a nice effect on Kuzcoâs overall sense of being.
He was young and lively and innocently wide eyed, and Kuzco barely got to interact with people like that anymore, let alone have it be reciprocated for more than a second or two. He could get used to it.
He gripped the styrofoam cup in his right hand, surprised when Benâs form came into view before he even had time to think about what he would say when he walked inside of the four star restaurant, glad that the change in plan didnât show in his steps, not a stumble in sight. Cool as ever.
âIâm not going to ask the question before youâve had a sip,â was his greeting, taking in the sight of the other, but not offering the cup.
âYou look,â he paused, wondering what word would come up first, eyes panning from the wild hair to the apron, which was definitely wet, ignoring the way the skin of Benâs arms seemed to glow from the water under the streetlights. Safer to stay on the eyes, green and wild. âFrazzled.â
Benâs boss, Skinner, had been giving him an EARFUL most of the nightâ âfix this, MEND THAT--BOY, bus the tables and donât let anyone see you for more than a minute! DO YOU UNDERSTAND PARKER?â (A request he found nearly impossible to succeed in).Â
And just when he thought the night couldnât get any more hectic, one of the pipes burst as Ben was hurrying by with a tower of dishes, blasted by the explosion of water.Â
Then there was the issue with the rats...
Soaking wet from head to toe, Ben busted through the back door of the kitchen into the alleyway, and up to the front of the building. And right in the nick of time. Mr. Kuzco looked about ready to walk through the front doors of Gusteauâs. âYou canât go in there, Mr. K!âÂ
Ben glanced down to the cup of what he hoped was cherry limeade. âIs that...? Thank you for the Uber Eats, Kuzco. But you really canât go in there, itâs not a good time. If you think I look frazzled, you should see Skinner...realizing that Iâm not in the back taking care of the--â Ben quickly bit his tongue, reaching for the drink Kuzco was being protective of, but still not getting it in his grasp. âNOT RATS.â He clasped a hand over his mouth as the passerby overheard. Ben was quick to grab the manâs shoulder to guide him down the alleyway, only imagining afterwards how much the suit cost him. A dirty wet hand probably depreciated it greatly. Ooopsie.
âWe canât be talking about rats out front like that, KUZCO! Someone might hear us! Just promise me youâre not gonna go in there and talk to Skinner. Iâll give you the inside scoop.â Ben pointed to the drink, feeling thirstier than ever. âCan I have that now? Please?â
