i also saw some interpretations about how the backrooms is racist bc of clark being an "angry black man", personally i don't get it and i feel it's like putting minorities on a pedestal. yes, clark is black and full of frustrations and grievances, and he isn't a good person, but it seems clear that the movie is using that to give clark character depth rather than to mock black people

also: i was rewatching hbomberguy's plagiarism and youtube video bc i was trying to recover from his idiotic backrooms review, i feel like hbomberguy's writing style would be easily flagged as ai generated these days

my guess is that the ending of the backrooms is a bit of a headscratcher that will confuse people expecting a movie where guys are chased by literal monsters and kanye PNGs through levels of some kind of multilevelled complex. i thought the ending was really good though (spoilers):

i interpreted the ending as a kind of cyclical ending, mary sees clark reflected in phil, the scientist, as he's making the same points clark did about understanding the backrooms. mary also understands that she is ultimately just as lost in the backrooms. she is a traumatized person who is leading other traumatized people to a better life but she knows the hypocrisy of it, she is metaphorically just as lost in the backrooms as clark was.

the ending implies that mary is either going to die, or will never leave async bc she knows too much, so in a way she also hasn't physically escaped the backrooms either. she's going to die in a place that is ostensibly an extension of the backrooms and the madness it represents. nobody will find out about what happened to her and it seems nobody will remember the real, complex mary. except for the backrooms itself, as it copies her body in a replica of the async facility

there's like this implication that the backrooms is leaking into the real world and i think it just represents the decaying past that is catching up with the present and the future.

i compared backrooms with annihilation and i think the most immediate comparison, is that the ending of annihilation is pretty ambiguous if taken literally but makes perfect sense if you connect it with the rest of the movie. dan olson already made The annihilation ending video that explains it the best. i feel like the same thing is happening with the ending of the backrooms where the epilogue is basically a recap of all the themes and ideas in the movie
