With all the talk about Holy Cow around the web I figured I’d chip in my opinion, not that it matters much.
I enjoy me some puns! I loved every Un-Set and wished for another! I’m not a total hater of silliness and lighthearted sets. In a vacuum.. this card is hilarious! But that’s in a vacuum. At what point does the ham fisted puns lose the charm? How many blatant wink wink puns do we need per set?
For me it wears thin fast… we have Holy Cow, Bovine Intervention, Loan Shark, Claim Jumper, Steer Clear, and the list goes on… Cheesy western trope card names, High Noon, This Town Ain’t Big Enough, Thrown from the Saddle, ext. Nearly every other card is an alliteration or rhyme. To me this screams Un-Set! How serious can we take this? It’s ok for MTG to be silly sometimes… sure. Problem is this set is taking itself seriously. It’s a set based on villains. It’s a set setting up the next big arc… while everyone cosplays. Were cowboys yeehaa! Sorry I can’t take this slop seriously…
Furthermore this just screams of pure laziness, pandering, and lack of proper world building. Anyone can take a trope, everything associated with it and paste it into a world. Especially when the canvas is blank… and mostly preexisting characters show up. Unfortunately I feel this is the norm going forward.
