Dude, how can it be that every single fucking thing about US politics trends on here immediately, yet when 27 countries in the EU vote and there's a historic, alarming lurch to the right (far right parties have won the elections in Italy, Austria and France), it's not even trending? In Germany, the AFD, a right-wing populist, anti-democratic, racist party with a wing that is officially extremist (read: Nazis) and is in parts monitored by the office for the protection of the constitution, is the second strongest party (also among 17-24 year olds!). Guess I'll die.

Lolita (1997)

Trigger Warning: Pedophilia, Molestation, Rape, Physical Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Sexual Abuse 

So this movie is up on Youtube, and I saw a lot of comments romanticizing Humbert Humbert’s relationship with Lolita purely because they neglected to read the book and based all their assumptions off the movie alone, making arguments like “he still loved her when she was an adult, so it was a love story and not literal pedophilia.

So here are some things the movie didn’t mention that the book did: 

-Humbert’s first wife, Valeria, who he married specifically because she looked young for her age (as in like a child). She cheated on him, resulting in him physically abusing her, and their eventual divorce.                                             - Humbert’s multiple trips to mental institutions where he says he “loves tricking doctors” and “neglected to share any knowledge of his pedophilia” - Dolores was 12 in the book, not 14                                                                      - Humbert molested Dolores before she went away to camp, but she was too young to understand what was happening.                                                         - Humbert had planned to murder Charlotte by drowning her in the Hourglass Lake. When they arrived, however, too many people were watching for him to successfully carry out the murder.                                                                          - During their stay in the first hotel they visited, Humbert attempted to drug Dolores so he could rape her. The only thing that stopped him was the pill turning out to be fake.                                                                                             - At their stay in Beardsley, Humbert only ever met three of Dolores’ friends. She had a fourth friend who she talked about constantly, but upon the realization that she could be considered a nymphet, Dolores purposefully kept her away from Humbert in order to protect her.                                                                - Humbert begins to manipulate Dolores plenty of times, threatening to hurt her physically, convincing her that she will get in trouble as well, making her believe that her situation is best one she has, and threatening to leave her at her grandparents’ house, which she despises, when he suspects she may tell someone about their “arrangement".                                                                      - When Humbert found out that Dolores had become interested in boys from a neighboring private school, he began policing her friend circle.                          - Humbert learns Dolores’ address after she runs away by tracking her down through friends of friends.

Please feel free to watch the movie, or read the book, or both. I believe in appreciating all forms of art and Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita is an excellent novel. But understand that this never was and never will be “a love story”. Humbert Humbert is a criminal who took advantage of a 12 year old orphan. Please don’t let anyone tell you it’s a love story. I don’t care if it’s your English teacher, your sibling, or Jesus himself, this is not a love story.

Emergency Aid For My Grandparents

(Medical tw) Hiya everyone, I’m afraid I’ve some rather sad news to share. My grandad is currently in and out of the hospital due to what we suspect may be complications from covid and though we are of course hoping for the best, the situation doesn’t appear to be getting much better. He’s already been through three rounds of chemo for Leukaemia in the recent past and now has dementia and my family back home is really struggling to find care for him, my grandmother especially. He’s owned an upholstery shop in Santa Rosa, CA for over 50 years and is in danger of losing this family business as well as their house because of rent costs. And due to this difficult period, food and other expenses are now impossible for them to afford without help. I’m sure many of you know firsthand it’s very difficult to watch people you love who have played such a huge role in your life struggle like this. I’m in Scotland for college so all this has been immensely stressful to watch from such a vast distance away so I want to do whatever I can to help.

My sister has organised a fundraiser to help cover these expenses and I would be very grateful for anyone who is able to donate. Of course if you can’t donate a reblog is always helpful. Thank you ♡
