i drew this while ago?? a year ago?? the project’s wrapped up and the final donation was made (yay!) so i can share it now :)

when i was first drafting this, i wanted to mix both adolescence and tv anime versions of utena and anthy into one narrative. something that feels, like, appropriately angsty mid-20s lesbian with all the iconography i want in there!!! like our lady of sorrows and the arrangement of swords and a crucifix on page three (even with reverse image search i could not find the source for the life of me, but it’s referenced from a photo of a statue!).

i have a bad habit of thinking of cool imagery or references before actually writing dialogue though lmaooo. i think i was listening to a lot of preacher’s daughter at the time…..i know what i want to work on for future comics now at least >_>

"How pretty...the roses, I mean!"

I don't feel like putting this in the tags but I think about this (paraphrased) quote. A lot. Where do I even begin. Theres something about the way Utena realizing she loves Anthy, and communicates it so clearly, almost as thoughtlessly as breathing. And then she just?? Immediately tries to take it back??!?!??? Shes not slick at all either, as right afterwards, Chuchu blushes in shock at Utenas words, representing how she really flustered Anthy. However, she herself simply keeps smiling and watering the roses, humoring Utenas recovery. Utenas lesbianism is so clear to the both of them, but it must remain unacknowledged for Obvious Reasons.

Utena is trapped in the patriarchy and constantly being forced in romantic and sexual events with Akio and Touga (I don't remember??? If she said this quote in the third arc??? But it still applies either way). I don't think her take back was out of cute shyness or something, but rather,,, shame?

I say that "Oh Utena 100% realizes she loves Anthy", but thats only the half truth of my interpretation. I think its more like Utena realizes she feels,,,, """abnormal""" about Anthy. As in "girls shouldn't feel this way about other girls". But is it love? Desire? Utena can't tell, because her idea of romance, sex, relationships, and attraction are being pulled in a billion different directions. All she knows is that Anthy is special. Maybe similar to how Juri feels about Shiori. Maybe similar to how Wakaba feels about her. She doesn't know. But what she *does* know is that she has to hide it.

Meanwhile, Anthy has a broader idea behind these concepts. Maybe not the right ones (shes a 14 year old csa and cocsa victim), but she does know that Utena loves her. And she loves her right back. It would be romantic if they weren't trapped in a game where Anthy is traded, fought for, abused, raped, and used. Not only that, but I feel like Anthy always thought that her time with Utena wasn't going to last long. Its this pessimistic idea of her situation, thinking that shes forever trapped. That she'll never escape ohtori with Utena, and that shes only but another pawn in the game. And yet, Anthy yearns for her, and wishes that things were different. That she could push Utena towards the right direction (if you believe that adolescence is a direct sequel to the show, then she does do this. She pursues Utena, dances with her, begs her not to fight. And after all was said in done, she becomes Anthys car so she can save herself once more) (They save each other from ohtori :]).

At the very end of the show, we see the photograph of them taken a few episodes beforehand. They were holding hands the entire time. We know that Anthy specifically positioned the camera so Akio wouldn't be in it. But the hand holding really makes me wonder. Was Utena in on the photoshoot as well? I doubt the hand holding was done out of the blue. Everything about it feels so calculated that I begin to think that Utena eventually gets a clearer idea of her love for Anthy. Still not a perfect one, but this + her "just so happening" to say "Stop that" to Chuchu while Akio attempts to touch her makes me think that at this point of the show, shes getting a grasp of her situation, her feelings. Of course, she doesn't get the full picture. But she forms a loose outline that says she adores Anthy, and that Akio is unnerving.

I don't know if this makes any sense. At all. I'm just spilling out thoughts. Just know that Utena repressing her love for Anthy makes me reallyyy sad, and I find her slowly coming to terms with her feelings heartwarming. Idk. Idkkk
