What looks like your typical self love evening, was actually a night of desperation filled with tears and being insanely uncomfortable. I have psoriasis. As a kid, I remember being so ashamed of saying that. In elementary school psoriasis caused me to have massive bald spots. I was teased and bullied. I hated this stupid disease that I knew nothing about. I was on steroids for years, and had to get my blood drawn weekly to make sure they weren’t causing liver failure. It’s been 15 years since I’ve had a psoriasis flare that effected my skin or covered my scalp. In the last 15 years there’s been a handful of times where I’ve had tiny flares on my head that quickly disappeared with some good ol’ stress management. This is not one of those times. I am experiencing a flare up like I haven’t seen since elementary school and it fucking sucks. (Stress sucks yo!) When I was diagnosed with psoriasis no one told me it was an autoimmune disease. I didn’t find that HUGE piece of information out until I was researching being a bone marrow donor for a family member. Imagine my surprise when I realized that years and years of me telling doctors that I had psoriasis only to have them be like, “Ok, but anything else?”, was not ok!!! The point to that is, psoriasis research has come so far. Social media has come so far. I have no interest in going back on steroids, but lots of interest in trying out a few things that other people with psoriasis have said worked for them. So here it is. Last night I started some over the counter remedies to see if they can make a difference in all of this itchy uncomfortableness. It’s not pretty, but it’s where I’m at.
