I think one of the major reasons Midnight Mass is so compelling as a show is that it has such a three-dimensional viewpoint on religion. Religion isn't shown as bad, nor are the people following it. It's simply displayed as a tool, one that can be used for whatever the speaker desires, be it good or bad. In Midnight Mass, religious people are shown as both kind and cruel, both fanatical and open-minded, and both ignorant and knowledgeable, which alone makes it one of the best depictions of religion in modern media.
