Just in case
Iām actually going to reblog a thing just because this is really important.
As someone who has epilepsy and used to have several grand mal seizures a day, Iād also like to add that āoffer helpā can range anywhere from keeping the person calm to explaining to them where they are and what they were doing to even just telling them they should sit and rest for a while longer (lack or coordination is common, and it can be hard to walk straight or see clearly).
Itās okay for them to take up to a half hour to fully regain their bearings and sort out what they were doing prior to the seizure. Just answer any questions calmly and be there for support.
If they come around and you start to panic or shake them or ask them what the heck is wrong with them they are going to freak out and panic too.
I cannot stress it enough that this is bad.
If someone has a seizure and they come out of it, please. please stay calm. They are likely disoriented and confused, even if itās only for a minute or two, and you donāt want them panicking on top of that because they can have another seizure as a result.
Plutarch sure does like asking children to risk it all meanwhile he risks almost nothing every time.
I donāt post about the hunger games a lot because it is my Original Hyperfixation, and I fear once I start I will not be able to stop, but I just re-read SOTR and have to get this thought out:
One of the most valuable things that TBOSAS and SOTR added to the series, in my opinion, is highlighting just how much of a limited/unreliable narrator Katniss is, and gently challenging her perception in the early books that no resistance to the Capitol exists and/or is futile. Reading the original trilogy, you get the perception early on that there is little to no resistance against the Capitol, that it is futile and pointless to fight back, that the Capitol has well and truly subjugated its population until Katniss and Peeta spark the blaze that sets the country aflame.
But thatās not true. People have been fighting back and resisting the Games HARD, right from the very beginning. Casca Highbottom, the Gamesā own creator, throwing institutional roadblocks and trying to stop Snow before he gets out of control. Arachne and the girl from District 10. Marcus and his refusal to play the game. Reaper and everything he did in the arena. Lucy Gray, who defied Snow and his Games so profoundly she was written out of history entirely. Sejanus and his story. EVERYTHING ABOUT Haymitchās Games - everything he did, Mags and Wiress and Beetee and Plutarch, Maysilee, the Newcomers. Lenore Dove and everything she did in service of revolution. Resistance against the Games, we can infer, has been active and persistent since the Games themselves were founded.
Katniss isnāt wrong or dumb for having the perspective she does early on in the trilogy; sheās working off the information she has, and thereās so much she hasnāt seen and doesnāt know about. But the resistance she feels is born at the end of THG/into CF has always been there, has always been fighting, has given the Capitol a run for their money right from the beginning. There are so many ways in which Katniss will never know just how much came before her, and how much the revolution was the endpoint of a struggle thatās as old as the Games themselves.
Idk, the whole thing makes me think about doomerism, and the āweāre so cookedā crowd, and manufactured consent, and a hundred other things. The people in power will do everything in their power to make sure that you feel isolated in your resistance, that you find the effort pointless and futile, that you feel as though you are a one-person army against a tidal wave. But how many acts of resistance, both historical and ongoing, are you simply not privy to? How many Lucy Grays and Sejanuses and Haymitchs are out there that you just donāt know about? How many are being hidden from you? How many times is the narrative rewritten to attempt to snuff it out? Sometimes you have to resist blind, and trust without knowing that you are not alone in the fight. And I think thatās an extremely important message in the current moment
the difference between Haymitch and Katniss's narration is so funny. Haymitch would give us everyone's social security number if he knew them, while Katniss wouldn't even tell us her mom's name.
āsotr is mid because you already know how it endsā shut the fuck up, the point of the book is that despite knowing how it ends you would have never known what actually went down because thatās the point of propaganda, the whole book is about the power of propaganda
iām so appreciative to suzanne for reframing the rebellion from the original trilogy as a āthey saw their moment and took itā type situation and showing us that theyāve been trying, over and over, with so many failed attempts, to break the arena and incite a rebellion for decades. in this current political climate never giving up hope is so essential. haymitch wasnāt the first nor the last, and they kept going even when it seemed completely futile, and thatās what counts, and what ultimately saves them all.
women were not banging out spirk fanfiction in the 60s for you to be AI generating your fic
An open Tumblr letter to younger fans, from a 77-year-old TOS fangirl
* who has shipped Spirk since that night in 1967 that Amok Time first aired * and helped storm NBC to keep TOS on the air for a 3rd season * and wrote fanfic way back in the day * and was privileged to be around for the earliest days of fandom, when Leonard used to come to your house if thatās where the fan club was meeting and sit on the sofa with you in that Spock hair cut and eat cake
All of you who are writing TOS/AOS fan fiction and creating fan art now: remember, YOU are the ones shaping the traditions of fandom. You have inherited the kingdom. Bless you for keeping it vibrant, growing, alive. In fifty years, you will be the ones who are remembered for molding it and handing it down to the future. It probably doesnāt feel like now, but you are making history.
Your current addiction to TOS and the feels you get when you contemplate the love between Jim and Spock will be with you for life. It wonāt always be in the forefront; you will sometimes go years, sometimes go a decade, without Star Trek being more than a passing thought. But then something will remind you and every consuming feeling you feel right now will come rushing back, every bit as powerful and deep and strong as it is today. All there, right where you left it.
The friendships you make in fandom will be with you for life. Like all friendships, they will wax and wane as the focus of your life shifts over time, but you will always be able to pick up the thread. You will ā to give you a hypothetical example ā be 77 years old and discover Tumblr and get a rush of Spirk feels after a decade of not giving TOS a thought, and contact your 83-year-old fangirl friend in the nursing home, to whom you havenāt spoken in several years. You will open the conversation with, āSo, Jim and Spock love each other and that just makes me so happy.ā And your friend in the nursing home will sigh and say, āYes. They do love each other. Itās such a comfort.ā
That look that Jim and Spock give each other, of absolute adoration and acceptance and love? Thatās real. Itās rare, but itās real. One of my greatest joys in life is to see my son and his husband give each other looks like that. Of course I donāt know you; I donāt know your strengths and struggles or your place on the spectrum of gender or anything about your sexuality or what you look like or what your life has taught you to believe about yourself, but I do know this: YOU DESERVE TO BE LOVED AND LOOKED AT THE WAY JIM AND SPOCK LOOK AT EACH OTHER. Please donāt accept less than that in your life.
The future of our planet does not seem very hopeful at the moment. But please remember that when Gene created Star Trek, the world was in turmoil and the future seemed very bleak. Star Trek is, was, always shall be about hope. Reach for it. When TOS first aired, we hoped to see some form of a Starfleet on the horizon in our lifetimes. That vision must be passed on to you. Do it. Make the world worthy of launching the human race out into space. CREATE STARFLEET.
You are all creative and funny and amazing. Far more amazing than you know. Be kind to yourselves. Live long and prosper, kids.
Tags are in reference to my first bullet point. Meant as a kudos to your work, but feel free to untag yourself if you donāt want to be linked to my ramblings; I wonāt be offended! (Also, this extends to a thousand other artists and writers out there who deserve kudos. tag at will.)
@spockslashā will not be taken down until / unless tumblr takes it down.
Love from āFandom Grandmaā Deeās children
breaking my usual āno star trek on the band pageā rule 1) bc this is so cool and sweet 2) to soapbox for a sec, cuz
i think the punk scene and its continuity owes so much to women like this. The networks that spirk shippers built to communicate and create art are structurally so similar to the networks punks have used since the 70s and continue to use in the present. Zines, conventions, DIY art of questionable legality, disregard for social norms and taboos. Hell, emailing your favorite touring band to try and get them to play your basement show has its precedent in fangirls getting Nimoy at their bookclub.
We owe so much to spirk shipper grandmas, and itās such an honor to continue their traditions in myriad ways.
Live long and prosper, and fuck cops.
captain kirk looking at his first officer like he just realized he wants to grow old together what the fuck is his problem
Rewatching Star Trek TOS after 20 years and I'm once again in my Spirk brainrot era. So good to be back, I missed these silly space guys.
Thinking about the fact that greenTeacup deleted her ao3 and tumbler (after going dark and hiding her work a couple months ago) makes me SO sad. I know this is part of the ebbs and flows of fan fiction; writers will come and go from projects and fandoms. And also obviously we don't know what's going on in her life personally.
But this feels like part of something larger with more people coming into fandom not knowing the rules, and that includes begging for updates or criticizing the writing.
Lionheart got me through some really really low moments and a really hard period. I will always be grateful for that. I hope GTC holds on to the nice messages, comments, art, etc and comes back when she feels ready. I hope that she's doing ok. I hope she knows how important her work is to readers
Who else up grieving Lionheart and the rest of Greenteacup's amazing AO3/Tumblr accounts? šššššššššššššššš going to have to hide my devastation because my roommates have no idea I read fanfic and I cannot explain this lmao
On another note, I hope she's doing better and that this change helps her peace of mind. She owes us nothing and has shared some absolutely incredible writing with us for years anyway. Thanks for the memories. Pouring one out tonight to GTC and her fanfic, her blog, and the worlds she weaved online, and hoping that whomever she may be in real life is thriving and finding fulfillment elsewhere.
Thank you the Pitt for giving me the bitchless, boba-loving, sensory avoidant autistic person that imprints on people like Jacob in twilight representation I've been searching for my whole life
samira mohan is so fucking awesome because when we see a student doctor overriding her recommendation in front of a patient we never see her scolding joy afterwards even though she definitely is a little shocked. what do we actually get?? samira appreciating and praising joy's strategic solution. doctor samira mohan you will always be my favorite
