The iberian desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) is the shy platypus of the Iberian Peninsula. With a monotreme-looking snout, webbed feet with bird scales in each finger, rat tail and iridescent hair, these semi-aquatic moles inhabit the cleanest headwaters of the Cantabric and Pyrenean rivers (not because it prefers high altitudes, but because of the elevated contamination at lower courses). Of nocturnal habits, it feeds on aquatic insects, such as plecopteran and trichopteran nymphs, thanks to a specialized system of whiskers in its snout and lower jaw, that allows it to detect movement underwater.

Iberian desmans are endangered due to habitat loss and predation from invasive american minks, and despite this, the existence of this little animal is completely overlooked and not popularly known by many. Because of this, conservation efforts and funds for the recovery of its populations are insufficient.

B. iberica is a hymenopteran from the Mutillidae family (velvet ants), which are not true ants, but more closely related with wasps. Because of this all females' got a stinger and can use it repeatedly as a defense mechanism.

This species is not very well studied. Most of their populations live in the Iberian Peninsula, but are not exclusive to it, as it can also be found in Morocco, and even Italy (Western Mediterranean Sea). However, it is known to be very termophile and solitary, and its larvae are likely parasitistic of other hymenopterans or dipterans.
