Despite her initial nerves at being in the colony where she had committed her crimes, Lux is enjoying the return to Dionysus, to decadence and upscale and exclusivity. Sure, the people are as horrid as she remembered, but the fashion, the food… Lux intends to enjoy her time back in the pocket of wealth and conspicuous consumption.
But she doesn’t necessarily intend to spend it alone. Her heels only give her the slightest extra height so Lux still has to do a bit of straining as she searches for the tips of metal horns in the crowd. Between her mission with Na, their mission to find a hand, and the shopping that had to be done, it had been a few days since Lux had seen Nero. There’s something heavy at the center of her chest, something that bursts into bubbles when she thinks of seeing them again: she misses them. In a way unlike what had been before.
There aren’t words for it, at least not in Lux’s vocabulary. For what shifted between them, since that moment in the greenhouse, since that night that Nero held her… She can’t even be sure that it isn’t all just in her head. Whatever it is, though, it makes her a little more sensitive to everything about Nero, as if they have the intensity on them turned way up.
It isn’t long before she does spot Nero, their mask and the glitter of their boots. She beams under her mask and, once she reaches them, drops her hand to their shoulder. “Hi,” she says eagerly. “You look amazing.” And then, as she’s taking in the whole of their outfit, she sees it. The hand, where there had been none before. “Oh,” she exclaims softly. Her hands cup this new one, fingers running along the lace of the gloves covering it, trailing up to their elbow. There’s nothing spectacular about it, except that it’s there when it wasn’t before. Yet Lux can’t take her eyes off it for a moment.
But then she tips her face back up to smile at Nero, bright and shining even through her mask. “You really look amazing, Nero.” They do, all of them.
The masquerade is a job, simple as that. They have been given a task to complete in the time they are there, and they will do everything they can to help the rest of the crew make certain that it is finished. But that is not what they are thinking about, mostly, as they wander through the crowd, waiting for Quino to return from getting a drink so that they might begin their part of the mission. No, they are thinking about Lux, about how beautiful she will look, about holding her hand with their new one, about dancing with her, if she might want that. It is a strange thing that they cannot remember coming across before, their processors being so wholly taken up with thoughts of one person. But they do not mind one bit.
Being around her makes them feel nearly human in ways that many do not believe it is possible for an android to feel. They know, logically, that it has not been long since they have last spoken, mostly in passing, too busy with their respective missions to truly take the time they want, but it feels as if it has been a small forever since they have gotten to be close to her in the way that they want.
So when they turn and see her approaching, a smile slips over their face under their mask. They are tempted to wrap their arms around her, although they are not certain that it an appropriate response here, now. She is even more beautiful than they remember, and her costume only adds to her beauty, the flowers so perfect. Before they can reply, though, she sees the hand. The grin that spreads across their lips is wider than ever as she takes it, runs her own fingers over it, up the lace of the gloves. If they had a heart, they think it might have been beating very fast in that moment.
“Thank you. You look stunning. I am afraid I do not have the correct words to explain how striking you are,” they say, voice quiet, words only for her, as they smile down at her. “I have been very excited to show you my new hand.”
