So this was the “self-indulgent rk1k fanart” I squeezed in between working the more intense pieces. I was originally going for a simple composition + minimal rendering for a quick turnaround, but then I got lost in the sauce (the sauce: Markus’ arm).

The color draft went pretty smoothly - my favorite part (and the challenge) was getting their skin tones right under the sun vs. in shadows: I’ve been painting too much artificial cold lights for vibes lately, so I wanted to challenge myself to a scene with bright natural lighting. It turned out alright I think!

Though by the time I finished rendering, everything was a bit too smooth for my taste. So I added some textures on fabric & shades, as well as thickness to the cloth & solar panel. In hindsight I prolly should have planned the various textures & edges better before I start rendering.

Oh and I made some parts of their skin iridescent - theoretically, direct sunlight would also bounce off of their chassis underneath the artificial skin, so I made the highlights appear a bit metallic. Some optics headcanon I guess? I also added some scars on Markus’ body, although I don’t think they turned out too well.

Overall pretty happy about it; 12hr start to finish.
