Frequently occurring scenario in 4 steps:
a nonverbal/nonspeaking autistic who struggles to express themself in "proper English" talks about an issue within the autistic community
-> almost no likes, no reblogs
I write about the same thing later; good wording and clear structure
-> many likes, lots of reblogs, people commenting "Oh, that's so important to know, thank you!"
Honestly....... It may be confusing at first, but once you know the pattern it's actually pretty easy to understand ungrammatical sentences on AAC.
You know that many autistics struggle with "I" and pronouns, right? Assume they'll simply drop it and refer to themselves in third person (their name).
Many AAC devices make punctuation difficult. There will be a period after a word because the device just . does . this . thing . here. And often no commas because that's complicated too.
Maybe "I am", "This is", "There is" or "It's" are difficult to find - assume it's "is", or sometimes "I am" is just "Am".
Future and past tense can be difficult too. The context helps here.
"Is not [name] . Say. Is . Say . Green." - "That's not what I said. I said it's green."
Plus, sometimes words are hard to find so it's easier to describe them.
"Red water" or "waterfall eyes" could be easier/faster to find and write than "blood" or "I am crying/sad", depending on the device or the language skills.
And if you really don't understand something because the preposition is unclear and you don't know if the thing in question is in the bathroom, in front of the bathroom, on the sink, under the sink, etc..... Just ask for clarification.
Once you know what words are important for the meaning of the sentence, it's not that hard. Don't ignore those of us who struggle with expressive language just because you're used to "proper" English.
yes yes yes ! take long time write things in AAC , and also one more " unique " problem : similar buttons . in speech english right now and soon easy tell apart from each other , but here how look in duckie AAC :
words not relate to each other can be accidentally switch because buttons look similar or very close together , and take extra work understand if not know how person set up AAC . ( duckie layout for example is all custom )
not use very much verb tense because have hard time even figure out which one right unless feel like spend even longer to write , and even have brain energy for that . which not always do .
especially when brain overwhelm , meltdown or frustrate or seizure , even AAC words become very simple and repetitive .
do have ability type in extra words , words that not have in AAC , but that can also really frustrate and take time because need think about if this new word make sense . so sometimes say same easy words lots , rather than say more complicate words , even if know those words .
and for every time say not to comment on how write , always just feel like more people do comment . like people congratulate self for tolerate or find fucking cute , when really say very important things .

stop fucking using the word psychotic to describe bad behaviour and violence already god fucking damn it
oh my god i’m so tired psychotic does not mean violent it does not mean angry or erratic. it refers to a person suffering from psychosis, a loss of touch with reality that includes hallucinations and/or delusions. psychotic people are not inherently violent and y'all need to understand how much stigma you create when you again and again incorrectly use the word psychotic without even thinking about it

Hi, I'm the scary narcissist that you keep warning people about.
I'm not empathetic, I'm not naturally caring, and I have extreme trauma that has irrevocably affected how I process emotions. I'm selfish, I have to consciously choose to tend others' needs, and I often don't recognize when I've hurt someone's feelings.
I meet the criteria for narcissistic personality disorder. I agonize about making sure I don't hurt people because of how HARD it is for me to perform empathy, which I do not naturally feel.
I choose kindness and compassion, not because they come naturally to me, or because "it's just the right thing to do," but because we have to take care of each other in order to have a functional society.
Every day I make the choice to be as kind and compassionate as I know how, knowing the entire time that there are people who truly, deeply, sincerely believe that this makes me a monster.
I'm not going to torture you for fun. I'm not going to kick your dog. I don't get off on psychologically abusing people. And if you actually care about what it's like to live with a personality disorder, and how HARD it is, extend some of that famous "empathy" of yours and stop treating people with narcissistic personality disorder like monsters waiting to snap.
"high functioning" and "low functioning" autism still isnt real btw. like literally just because somebody is mute or has to rock in a chair alot or can only make small noises or what the fuck ever does NOT make them worth less of a person or stupider then a "higher functioning" autistic person.

like you do realize that you can stop saying "high functioning" and "low functioning" autism while still realizing that different autistic people will have more needs then others and nobody will have the same experience? like both of these points can co-exist
Compare me with one autistic person and I'm high functioning compare me with another and I'm low functioning put me in different situations and I will function differently the labels are absolutely meaningless and say nothing about the people they're supposed to describe low functioning is generally used to describe someone with say less communication skills with nt people or more vulnerability to sensory overload what the label doesn't say is which of those or others it actually is so not only does it arbitrarily separate the autistic community and get used as a way of deciding who's more 'useful' to capitalism but it doesn't even work as a description which is the one thing a label is supposed to do
in a truly collaborative and ethical psychiatry, the concept of "noncompliance" would be obsolete. it would be LAUGHABLE, because the patient would set their own goals for treatment and would have ultimate power over whether or not they changed or met them.
sure, there would be ambivalence + psychosis + skipped appts + self-sabotaging but that would be seen through the patient's perspective- do you call it noncompliance when you stay up later than intended or go out drinking with friends when you swore you'd save money?
to "comply" is to yield to an order. we don't need to be ordered to stop suffering- we need partners in our efforts to minimize it.

personal love brain way it is - there is struggle, sometime lot struggle! but made peace w this & try be best kind to self. what hurt most is how other ppl treat & react - THAT what need change, for ppl learn more patience & kind. in sad twist, sometime "worst symptoms" wouldnot happen natural, but result of ppl who unkind & impatience.
insteadof force ppl to mould, should remove mould, make world anyone comfy live in. that means give lot access options, teach patience & kind to all from young, & make sure nothing unfair restrict
if youve had extensive experience in mental health programs and psychiatric institutions, you probably have dealt with changes in diagnoses, conflicting diagnoses, different medications, medications that dont work, medications that work but only at a deep cost to the self, etc.
so why is so much of the discourse on mental health thats become prevalent recently (especially with covid impacting mental health) focused on following diagnostic criteria, determining what specific oppressions people face and what terminology they can or cant use based on diagnostic criteria, and in general maintaining rigid definitions of mental illness and its causes while claiming to be bringing awareness to it?
ive noticed that most discussions on mental health and most progressive-ish education on mental health (ig infographics for example) take a current and very neoliberal version of medical knowledge to be unchanging and scientifically proven. the ‘mental health activism’ thats emerged only builds around these frameworks without questioning their legitimacy, telling the viewer what you should/shouldnt say to someone with ___ disorder, why you should support people who do ____, why certain language is dehumanizing for people with ____ diagnoses. and what does “support” even mean in that context? my life would not change that much if people decided to start “supporting” me for minor habits i have or stopped using ableist language. what is more dehumanizing to me is the real way ive been treated in medical institutions, by my school, by being shuffled through different psychiatrists and treatments for years. its very weird that so much focus is on amending individual action while reifying a very medicalized and simplistic view of mental illness, and advocating capitalist treatment as the solution, with this notion that if we just destigmatize therapy and medication enough mental illness will cease to be a problem. and honestly this has spilled over into popular culture just given the prevalence of “take your meds” memes and shit.
we know that many mental illnesses are not actually that distinct from each other, we know that many diagnoses have only recently been created, we know that many are specific to historic context, we also know that patients’ symptoms will start conforming more to dsm standards of symptoms after they get diagnosed– obviously none of these categories are neutral or innate, and the relation between doctor and patient, or between medical knowledge and patient, is reciprocal. but recognizing this complicates the causes and prospective treatments of mental illness, in ways that i think are honestly uncomfortable for many people. obviously therapy, medication, and general mindfulness shit can be immensely helpful, but primarily so we can be ‘helped’ enough to sufficiently participate in the labor market.
and in mental health ‘activism’ few people want to talk about the deadening effect mood stabilizers and antipsychotics have on many people, that the process of ‘healing’ is often also one of loss, loss of the parts of self that must be chemically subsumed in order to properly function in capitalist society. im not anti-medication or anti-therapy but i think were frequently put into situations where the only choice– if we want to keep going on and living with a degree of free will and sanity– is to comply. that demonstrates a much larger issue with the way we treat health and the psyche under capitalism, and the way mental illness has been constructed and treated in the west, which will never be solved by any of these liberal individualistic health initiatives

well, the symptoms labelled as RSD are seemingly a result of emotional dysregulation in adhd, but the term/link was proposed by one guy and echoed by a lot of people who resonated with it – it’s not something that’s been studied enough yet for me to claim 100% “this is what X is and we’re naming it Y”.
emotional dysregulation in adhd does exist, don’t get me wrong, but people are allowed to debate on the labelling of this aspect of emotional dysregulation
i hope this is okay to add:
i wanna clarify my stance is not "i don't think rsd is real" necissarily. the psychological experience that rsd describes is very much a real thing and i even experience it myself (i briefly understood it as 'rsd' before i quickly put together that it was more than likely a trauma response). my actual stance is that i think rsd is a counterproductive and problematic way of conceptualizing said experience, especially since said experience isn't limited to adhd by any means and dodson claims that talk therapy isn't effective in addressing it and nor is anything else, other than alpha agonists or MAOIs.
as you said, the lack of research into this phenomenon (and the lack of evidence provided by dodson himself regarding the biomechanics of how this works as well as the actual effectiveness of these medications in alleviating "rsd" sets off a bunch of alarm bells in my brain, but maybe that's just 'cause i'm a psych-critical adhd person. but i don't want anybody getting the impression i think that "rsd" is fake, per-se.
