Software development Reddit/TikTok/Insta/YouTube is so icky. There’s this idea that without a CS degree, you will never land a job in CS. And that you should be spending most of your free time working on side projects. And that you need to always try to be better than everyone else and grind harder each day. And if you don’t remember all these different algorithms, you are unemployable.
You have like 40-50 years to build a career. You don’t have to rush your way into a 6-figure senior role where you are working 70 hour weeks. Life is unpredictable. So you just go with it. There is no perfect algorithm to getting a job in CS. There’s things you can control and things you can’t.
I say this while being an unemployed, and maybe the software dev lifestyle isn’t for me. But, I really think that social media is reinforcing an unhealthy mindset for CS students/grads.

Does such a thing as 'the fatal flaw,'
that showy dark crack running down the middle of a life, exist outside literature?
I used to think it didn't. Now I think it does.
And I think that mine is this: a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs.
