almost everything he did was an effort to keep himself from going feral

this is because he already went feral once and came back (it is left ambiguous if it was a truly feral state or if it was just a severe mental break caused by being locked in a vault for a year by himself eating the corpses and molerats; he has little memory the experience, like a fugue state, but his paranoia and terror fills in his memory with the worst possibility)

he “came back” because raiders broke into the vault, found him, and chained him in a room to keep as a pet/experiment bc one of the leaders had a brother who went feral and he never got over it. jack bit him once so he got the gas mask put on him. jack was also forcibly given drugs

jack developed this belief that if he takes off the mask he will degenerate again; he also believes the drugs reversed the effects, so he is self-medicating with mentats

[one day someone will tell him mentats abuse causes the decay of mental faculties and he will panic]

so thats why he refused to take off the mask because he has this SEVERE hypochondriac-type belief that if he goes maskless around people he will be struck with the compulsion to bite them. a part of him knows this isnt true but he cant overcome the anxiety

thats also why he works out a lot and surrounds himself with people (raiders or not), talking to them, because he is trying to keep himself healthy and mentally sharp. hes just desperately trying not to go feral (even though he does not seem to be exhibiting any signs of going feral)

(actually when he goes without mentats, he mistakes the withdrawal symptoms as feral symptoms and freaks out, the cycle perpetuates itself)

beneath all of this terror and health anxiety however jack really has no reason to live so it is a lot of work to protect nothing. he just cant help it

the event that got him locked in the vault and the whole feral/raiders thing is the event that broke him and made him turn to the Light Side though. he lived for ~100 years gradually going off the deep end and finally did something very bad and got punished for it. at least being alone for a year gave him time to think. he emerged wanting to be better but also eating himself alive with the guilt and self loathing

10/10 very melodramatic

this isnt everything about jack but its the most pertinent part

jack KNOOOOWS he isnt pleasant on the eyes (once you take off his everything). he has extensive damaging on his body even as a ghoul. and his face... his face has seen better days. he doesn’t wear the mask because he’s self-conscious but if his S/O managed to help him take it off the whole “sorry i’m actually terrible looking” is just an added anxiety to the situation

11. How my Muse handles date night preparation

gjfgdjfgj when it comes to planning date nights he starts with a general idea and thinks its very exciting and cool but like the day of he gets last-minute ideas and tries to jam in those extra things, it can become a bit of a frantic dash but he’s not really stressin, it would even appear it’s fun to him. i think he’d be very preoccupied with thinking of how to make it most enjoyable for his partner and then the last thing he would realize is that he has to decide on what to wear because oh yeah. he’s gonna be there too

if someone is taking Him on a date and told him Chill, I got this this time he’d be so lost because someone doing something nice for him is a foreign concept. he’d just spend more time making himself presentable. and sitting still for like 45 minutes low key anxiously waiting

he’s into the classics like “dear” and “my love”. maybe throw in a sunshine. depending on who he’s with they might get 1 unique name

he has a metric ton of baggage and he knows not a lot of people are interested in handling that. similarly, he only has eyes for good-hearted people and he’s done a lot of nasty, brutal things that he feels he is obligated to tell them about, out of respect for them, and that could drive them away. he hasn’t 100% healed from massive rejection more than 50 years ago so getting rejected again is terrifying?? and unless he leaves boston with them his lifestyle is also generally precarious at best. essentially he has zero self esteem

5. How they express their interest/affection prior to a relationship

jack definitely THINKS hes a lot more subtle than he is. as due to aforementioned insecurities he is very unwilling to make forward and obvious gestures, but he tends to act on impulse and whim so that means just the way he talks to them, how often he likes spending time with them, showing up with gifts for them, become indicators. jack is overall known for seeming friendly and generous so to many people it may not seem out of the ordinary

he’s into drama so going out of his way is generally the norm, whether it is by actual physical feats like a Spiderman Kiss or going at lengths to track down something they mentioned they needed/wanted. he will also find ways to sneakily take care of their enemies and problems, talk to people who know people to make their life easier. he lives for surprising his loved one so most things are done behind their back

22. How my Muse would tease their partner

he may hint at having a present or something planned for his partner that he builds up anticipation for while being awfully vague. like i said. he likes to surprise

he also likes to feel wanted so he’s also pretty adept at creating PHYSICAL tension by teasing

just play along with his flair and antics and he’ll appreciate it a lot. he likes compliments and reassurance. he’s often putting on a show so he doesnt take it for granted when it pays off
