Some thoughts on Piper at the Gates of Dusk
Just finished reading!
I was very happy to revisit this universe after many years, personally I'm not a big fan of continuing series with the kids of our main characters, but I enjoyed reading Ben and Max so much I can confidently say they are the right characters for this story.
I loved both Hewitt brothers, they are very fun to read, which is something that wasn't really happening with Todd's or Viola's pov lmao, not that it made the Chaos Walking trilogy any less enjoyable (those kids were going through so much it's no surprise there wasn't much space for comedy), but I do have to admit Max was my favorite. I loved Ben, I loved how sure he was of himself and his intelligence even if there were some insecurities deep down, but Max had a very authentic and very rebellious nature to his character that made me care deeply not only about what happens to him in the future but about how he feels and what the cruel new world does to his heart. I really hope he gets to live happily once the story is over.
I guess one thing I didn't like that much was how stubbornly Todd would insist that he was capable of protecting his family when in reality he couldn't. I just felt like he was portrayed quite powerless, I mean, everyone was powerless in a story where they have to fight gods, but Todd underestimated the dangers on new world so much it made me angry. I would expect him to be... smarter? He was wise in his words as I would expect from adult Todd, but some of the dangers they had to face could have been avoided if Todd had acknowledged he's only a man at the face of gods, men (and women) and the creatures of new world.
Both him and Viola were a bit immature in a sense, which I guess this tells us that even in adult age people can still be a bit dumb sometimes, even those who have been through so much and learned a lot, they still have stuff to learn.
Tiola PLEASE stop fighting you two know better than to split up over some argument that even though it's important it is no reason to leave someone you love so deeply 😤 so dumb.
Can't wait to read the next one! Read Piper at the Gates of Dusk it's definitely worth it!
I'm currently reading Piper at the Gates of Dusk but PLEASE WHAT'S UP WITH TODD AND VIOLA BREAKING UP???!! Please let this be fixed asap I can't with this 😭
Did Ness actually have a clear image in his head when he described the Battlemores and the Spackle in the books?
...whatever........uuuuhhh
Add a size comparison with a human figure
sketches from this recent CW reread! the fact that it's been 4 years since I first went on a marathon for this series is bonkers to me
Salve Perseus Jackson, hijo del Dios del mar 🌊
Just the two versions of the trio. They are tired
The fact that Rhydian was prescribed Ritalin,, his wolfblood symptoms were interpreted as adhd agsjdkkdif
The trio is tired.
Very excited 🥰
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I hope they keep Annabeth’s eyes and hair dark. Black girls deserve to be able to be portrayed onscreen as magical without having any of their features altered to look more white. The “magical Black person with light eyes/hair” is so played out.
Annabeth was blonde in the books to overturn the stereotype of dumb blondes. Black girls (especially Black girls with neurodivergencies/learning disabilities like dyslexia and ADHD) are shown as smart and capable onscreen significantly less than blonde girls. I’m so happy that they’ll now get to see themselves shown as clever and special and important.
If anyone has any issues with Black Annabeth, they can get over it.
If Percy stays blonde in the show then that scene where Nico ends up with a different white blonde kid and tells Percy "You're just not my type sorry" would be hilarious
But also... Poc Will Solace or Nico di Angelo. 🔥🔥🔥
I don't understand the desperation to make the show's version of Annabeth blonde when it wouldn't make sense. Like, the "dumb blonde" trope only applies to white people with naturally blonde hair. In my opinion, her being black fits the point Riordan was trying to make about Annabeth being underestimated due to her appearance just as well, and more fitting for the time period we're in. Like, I have never heard someone bring up the dumb blonde trope in 2022, but black girls are still seen as less intelligent than their white counterparts.
Also, the gray eyes are unnecessary because it never really made sense for Athena to affect her appearance when the gods have no DNA.
Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson; 13yo
Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase; 12yo
Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood; 16yo
Honestly I was a bit dissapointed at first for the actors not matching their book descriptions, but you know what? After watching Walker's interviews, sketches and his role on The Adam Project I was STUNNED by how much he reminded me of Percy, even with his blonde hair and blue eyes, It doesn't even matters to me anymore if his hair isn't black because his acting is ON POINT. So now I think of Leah and Aryan and guys, Rick and the production team probably saw a bunch of white blonde and also POC girls auditioning for Annabeth, and still Leah got the role, she did, that makes me think she was the one who really resembled the character, that she played Annabeth like no one else did and that makes me SO EXCITED.
I think Annabeth is one of the most complex characters i've ever read in childrens fantasy books, she is no stereotype, she's a character that shows a bunch of depth throughout the series and she makes you love her and also question her for her actions many times. I believe Annabeth is a flawed person and that only makes her so much more real, before knowing who was gonna play her I was worrying if wether such a young actress could fit the role, but now seeing what good of a choice they made with Walker I can only imagine how good Leah and Aryan are gonna be. That's it, I know the trio is going to kill it and I can't wait to watch the whole season.
I love them your honor 🤍
The trio is here!
