Send a symbol for my muse to find yoursâŚÂ - Accepting âď¸ - in the rain without an umbrella
Steve sighed, seeing Natashaâs two toned hair, dripping with rain water as she looked out over the Hudson. Steve had just finished with his support class, and had decided to drop by and check on her. They had all been going through their own issues after half of the universe disappeared. Everyone except Natasha. Steve was no fool, he knew she was going through her own issues, she just didnât let anyone see it in her. The soldier knew pain and avoidance when he saw it, he just didnât know how to approach it.The door was open, and Steve silently walked out onto the back lawn of the Avengers compound, and lifted the large umbrella heâd used himself over her head, standing close to her side so his body heat would help warm her from the chilly downpour. âI believe the water still works inside if you wanted a shower Nat.â He teased, before looking down at her, with an open smile on his face, âYou doing okay?â

Steve had been carrying laundry down the hall, the basket on his hip when he wondered where Bucky had gotten off to. He hadnât seen the assassin in far longer than was healthy. Steve put the clothes away, and was heading to the kitchen to start on dinner. Food generally pulled his lover out of whatever hiding place he had found, and he was starting to worry. Then, with a startling speed, Steve was tackled against the wall, a pair of full lips descending on his own, and a thigh pressing between his, slotting perfectly into place. It took him only a moment to realize what was going on, and press back into the weight pinning him against the wall. âJeez Buck, is this what youâve been doing all day? Stalking me and plotting against me?â he asked through their kiss, a moan ripping from his chest as a hand dipped south down his rib cage.Â

Something was very very wrong. He couldnât find Bucky. He was nowhere to be found, and it was so inexplicably wrong that Steve could feel an asthma attack coming on. That wasnât right⌠He hadnât had an asthma attack in over 70 years, he couldnât really be feeling that familiar tightening of his chest and struggling to breathe. Behind him, a cold whipping wind caught his hair, and he turned to see a broken piece of train car hanging out over a sharp precipice. Hanging on a precarious pipe, was his best friend, and lover.Â
âBucky!â He cried, rushing forward, and feeling his body rebel. Looking down, he could see skinny arms and legs, all knobbly and weak. Tears pricked at his eyes, because how could his body and the serum fail him when he needed it most? Tears streamed down his face as he pushed his weak body to try and help his friend. Climbing across the pipes was excruciating, but he kept pressing forward. All that mattered was getting to Bucky. Finally, he reached out for his hand, just for the pipe to break, and the brunetteâs fingers slipped right through his own. Steve tried to grip onto the pipe he was latched to, but it was icy, and his grip was weak. He tumbled after Bucky, the soldierâs scream echoing in his ear along with the wind rushing up to meet him.
He fell through something that gave into his weight, almost like water, and darkness swallowed him again until he was standing in front of a dimly lit mirror. Staring down at him, was his own reflection, the larger, stronger version of himself, looking just as distraught as he currently felt. From far away, only loud enough for him to catch the words in his good ear, he could hear the voices of Peggy, Howard, Phillips, and the Howlies, all of them whispering things heâd told himself every waking moment since that fateful mission.Â
âYou couldnât save him because you were never strong enough before.â
âEverything super about you came out of a test tube.ââYou were a science experiment, you didnât belong on the front lines.â
Steve covered his ears, screams ripping from his throat, chest constricting with the inability to breathe. It felt like the screaming would never end, until his eyes opened and above him he could see Buckyâs long hair shadowing his face, the gleam of his metal arm in the low light, spilling through the canvas of their tent. âBucky?â His voice was hoarse, and he wasnât sure if he had been screaming, or if it was dry from terror. He moved to wrap his arms around the brunette, half afraid to see them small again. To his relief they were thick and strong as he gripped his lover, and pulled him down close enough that Steve could feel Buckyâs heartbeat against his own broad chest. His face buried in the dark hair, nose finding its favored place at his pulse.âBuck⌠so sorry⌠I couldnât⌠I wasnât strong enough⌠I left youâŚ. Please⌠Forgive me please⌠I need it⌠Need to hear itâŚâ He begged, while his trembling arms tried to hold him even closer.Â

It was extremely cold. Even when he thought back about putting the Valkerie in the water, he never remembered it being this cold. It was only ever this cold during one of his night terrors, which felt impossible to wake himself from. The cold was almost hot with the way it burned his skin through his uniform. He could feel ice creeping up his veins, centering in his heart as he slowly froze to death. Then, like fire, he could feel hands on his shoulders, shaking the ice away. His eyes flew open, and in the darkness, the blue glow was all he could see aside from a shape over him.Â
He remembered Schmidt and the tesseract then, and his body reacted on instinct. He threw his hips, rolling the attacker beneath him, gripping their wrists. His vision was blurred from sleep, and hiss body was so fucking cold. His body shuddered, but his grip stayed firm until his vision finally started to clear. The first thing that took shape was the circular glow of blue, not square, then the goatee, and tousled hair, until Steve realized he was looking down at Tony, not at Schmidt.Â
âOh fuck..â He said softly, before releasing him, scrambling back off the bed, and against the wall, looking for all the world like a frightened animal. His hands were clenched close to his chest as he slid down the wall, curling into a ball.âTony⌠fuck⌠Iâm ⌠Iâm so fucking sorryâŚâ

Steve gave a half chuckle as he stumbled down the apartment hallway at half past three in the morning. Blood ran freely down his face and chest, knuckles beat all to hell, and bruised beneath. He was sure if he had the energy to lift his shirt there would probably be a dark bruise blossoming there, but nothing felt broken so he wasnât too worried. His back pocket was full of hundreds, but that wasnât near as valuable to him as the pure feeling that was coursing through his veins. Feeling something other than numbness and guilt was in short supply these days, and he only seemed to find it when he was coming home in such a state. With a curse he listed to the side, his shoulder hitting the wall heavily. Mumbling a wet sounding apology to whoever lived there, he pushed away from the wall, and made it to his door before his knees threatened to give out. He was so much more than tired, exhausted was probably a little closer, and he just wanted to collapse into bed, sleep with no nightmares, and wake up to shower and paint tomorrow. Unfortunately there was no such luck in his day as he fumbled with his keys, draped across the doorknob, just to keep himself standing. They fell from his shaking hands, and he let his forehead hit the solid door with a thunk. If he tried to reach for them now, heâd end up on the floor and unsure if he would get back up. If he didnât heâd be passed out and on display for all of his neighbors in the morning. Groaning, he tried to reach blindly for them, while still holding onto the door. It didnât prove fruitful and he let out another curse before resting on the door to get his bearings for another try.

Steve sighed and ran a hand over his face for what must have been the millionth time that day. The maps never showed anything different, no matter how many times he poured over them, and all he seemed to do was work himself towards another headache. Gloved hands rubbed at his temples as he paced in front of his desk, the call of the lyrium box in his desk was loud, and he grimaced before turning on his heel and exiting his tower office. Perhaps a walk of the parapets would do him well. Several guards along the walkways bid him good afternoon as he passed, hands tucked at the small of his back, and wind blowing the dark fur around his shoulders across his face. He bade them a curt good morning back, or a simple nod, but for the most part he was lost in his thoughts. Fury had promised him that he would remove him from his position should the cravings become too much for him to bear, and though Steve pestered him almost daily, the man still seemed to have a misplaced trust in him. The hands at the small of his back shook with pain as the blondeâs feet led him down towards the courtyard. Many merchants were happy to see him making his rounds, and he stopped to chat kindly with a few, before taking a turn into the garden. He knew Natasha secretly helped to keep the herbs in the garden growing, though he wasnât supposed to, and he found himself keeping an eye on them as well, especially when she was away working on some form of business for the Inquisition. He was just inspecting a leaf of Spindleweed when he heard a familiar laugh carried on the wind towards him. One of the soldiers was standing up from an obviously lost game of chess to the Tevinter Altus. His tanned skin caught the sun, and though Steve had heard him complain of the bitter cold in Skyhold, he was very surprised to see the man sitting in the garden at the chess table. The soldier seemed quite miffed, and stomped away as Steve approached. âI knew there had to be a reason for such a warm blooded mage to be outside in the gardens in âsuch freezing weatherâ,â He said, fingers gripping tighter in his gloves, still tucked away behind him, âI donât know why the thought that you might play chess never crossed my mind before now Tony.â He let his face split easily into a smile. The Tevinter was not as horrible as many in the castle claimed, and he wanted to prove once and for all, that mages and templars (even former ones) could still be courteous.

Bucky would have been perfectly happy to stand there forever with Steveâs hands on him, whispering reassurances he was certain Steve would have said he didnât need. Even if it hadnât been five years for him, it had still been some weeks while Steve was out fighting the good fight with Sam and Natasha. There hadnât been a lot of time for them to be together in between trying to remove the mind stone without killing Vision and fighting for the continuity of the universe in the wake of Thanosâ first attack. For just the precious moments they had now, Bucky let his body relax into Steveâs embrace, his own hands moving over planes of muscle it was still sometimes strange to associate with the young punk heâd first fallen for several lifetimes ago.
When Steve pulled away, Bucky couldnât help smiling softly at the admonition. âSometimes âIâm sorryâ is just an expression of sympathy, Rogers, not an admission of guilt.â Bucky knew he couldnât have done anything about falling to dust and dying on Steve. For once, it was absolutely not his fault and he knew it. Even not fighting wouldnât have saved him. But, his heart still ached for having left this beautiful man whoâd already faced such pain aloneâŚagain.
But, instead of arguing further, he simply nodded his acquiescence to the request to shut up and whispered âokayâ as he wound his arms around Steveâs waist, letting his lover hold on to him for that reassurance in the moment.
They absolutely would be talking later. After the immediate needs of this ragtag army from across the galaxies were seen to, after the dead and the survivors were taken care of as well. Bucky wouldnât let Steve get out of addressing the last five years so easily. But, now wasnât the time. Right now, he needed to just be here for his captain. There would be time later for him to take care of Steve the way Steve insisted on taking care of himselfâŚand everyone else he cared about.
Shifting just a bit as Steveâs arms around him tightened, he closed his eyes to savor the moment, even as he spoke up with questions. What better way to remind Steve he was truly back than to slide right back into the right-hand-man position that Bucky had always seen as his to claim? (Sam could fight him on that for eternity, but Bucky was never giving it up.) âWhat do you need me to do to help with clean-up? Iâve got this nifty new arm from Shuri that can help with actual heavy lifting. I can liaise with Okoye and the Wakandans. Or, anything else you need. Sergeant Bucky Barnes, reporting for duty, Captain Punk.â
The moment Bucky started asking questions, the warm, happy face seemed to slip away, replaced by the harsh lines of the Captain. Hesitantly, he let the brunette out of his arms, promising himself there would be more time for it later, he would make more time for it later. âFirst we need to start searching the wreckage for survivors, You and Bruce can help with that, as can Strange. Okoye has been doing quite well on her own, and deserves some time to reunite with her King.â the blonde pushed hair back from his forehead, and looked around, giving a few more orders before heading off into action, a little slower than usual. It was a long day, longer than most others heâd had save for that fatal day of the first snap. But this one was very close to it. The only difference was his heart was much lighter. Casualties were minimized this time around. Though there were several deaths that hit them harder than others. Natasha and Tonyâs deaths were heartbreaking, and though heâd already known about them, having to relay the news got harder with every person. Finally, once the rubble had been picked through, all their teams accounted for, either alive, wounded, or deceased, and promises were made to take at least 24 hours to rest before making further plans, Steve felt like rest was in sight. Pepper was just assuring him that they would be fine, she and Happy would take care of the funeral arrangements, and promised that if she needed any help she would call. He gave her a tight hug, with a shakily whispered apology. If there were tears in his eyes, Pepper didnât say anything as she bade him goodbye, taking Tonyâs body with her. Slowly, and wearily, Steve sank down onto a rock and put his head in his hands. It was time for rest, but his mind was plagued, with so many faces, so many names.... and so many questions. Had he done enough? Could he have stopped even one of those deaths? How much of this was his fault? He didnât even have the strength to punch out his frustrations over those questions as the broken shield finally fell from his hand with a small thunk. Slowly, his hands migrated from running through his hair, to clasping the back of his neck as he focused on just breathing through the tightening in his chest. Everything was going to be okay. He wasnât alone anymore.... everything would be okay.Â
romasorceress:
Wanda knew that if anyone understood where she was coming from  it was Steve. After all, he had been frozen in ice for over 70 years and woke up to everyone he knew being gone, more or less. Waking up and everything being different, thatâs how it was when her parents died, and Pietro. She took another breath, glancing back over at Steve when he spoke again.
She nodded at his first statement. âI know you understand for sure,â she commented. âThatâs why you and Sam went running every morning before, right?â she mused. As he pulled her in for a hug, she couldnât help but to laugh softly. âYeah I should definitely bring an umbrella next time. In case I donât have Captain America to save me next time,â she replied, smiling up at him.
Steve frowned at her words and shook his head. âSteve.â he corrected, turning to look down at her, and giving her a sad half smile, âIâm not Captain America anymore... and part of me thinks I havenât been for a long time.â He sighed softly, and pulled her in tighter for just a moment before releasing her. Part of him wondered if he could really talk about this kind of thing with her, or if he should just keep it to himself. Deciding that his own insecurities and issues were not the problems of someone he viewed like a little sister, he pushed those thoughts from his mind, and reached a hand out to feel the rain patter over the leather across his palms. âThat is why Sam and I went running every morning. Sometimes, just having a routine helped, or something you could do without having to think, or where you could just think.... itâs hard to explain. But I couldnât have gotten through it alone.â He forced a small curl to his lips, and bumped his shoulder with hers. âIf you ever need to talk about anything... you know Iâll listen right? I bet you didnât know thatâs the real super power Iâve always had. The rest of this all came out of a test tube.â He gave a half laugh so that she would know it was a joke.

When Tony came to again, something had changed, he noticed it immediately. Rhodey was just in sight outside, apparently deep in thought, but tiny movements of his shoulders gave it away to Tony, that he was struggling with something. Tony looked around, catching the lack of machines he was hooked up to. Only an IV. He guessed the house was keeping track of his vitals and was set to alarm the other occupants. In the same way, F.R.I.D.A.Y. gave a low chirp as the door opened to let someone enter. Steve. He wasnât necessarily surprised to see him there.
âLet me guess: We lost. Again.â he said with bitterness in his voice. That was the only way he would retain the strength of not breaking, because them losing meant they were gone, all of them gone for good.
Steve had a lot of regrets. No one was perfect, not even Captain America, and the rest of the world seemed to forget about that. Rhodey had thankfully seen reason once Tony had gone off world to stop Thanos, and still did. It was Tony that Steve was worried about. He had known the moment Tony had turned to look at him in that bunker, that heâd royally fucked up. If he was completely honest with himself, heâd known heâd fucked up long before that. Every time his stomach had twisted when heâd tried to find the words, and said something else instead, every step heâd taken closer to Bucky and further from the team... All of it had been signs to try and warn him away from the path heâd chosen, and still he hadnât listened. Now, standing outside of Tonyâs room, trying to figure out exactly what to say to him, he knew, and he regretted so much more than when he and Bucky had walked away from the manâs limp form. He ran a hand over his scruffy face, and paced until F.R.I.D.A.Y. gave him a quiet nudge. âThe Boss doesnât bite that much Steve, you should go talk to him.â And dammit if she didnât sound so reminiscent of Sarah Rogers that he felt compelled to follow directions. The soft lilt wrapped around him and gave him strength as he stepped through the door, holding his head high. He wasnât surprised at Tonyâs bitterness, and he took a breath to hold back the sick feeling in the pit of his stomach. âYes,â He finally answered, âWe lost. But that doesnât mean that any of us are giving up hope just yet.âÂ

hydrasassct:
Bucky stayed seated for a few beats, looking at the files now neatly stacked at the table and knowing heâd have to work up the nerve to look through them at some point. He wouldnât have to do it alone, and he wasnât sure whether or not that was the more daunting thought. He knew Steve didnât blame him for any of it, but it was an argument that could go in circles for hoursâBucky still blamed himself for everything that heâd done, and Steve insisted it wasnât his fault, that Hydra was fully responsible. For now, heâd leave that be. It was a situation for later.
He stood, tearing his eyes and mind away from the files and turning to Steve, mustering a smile. âI wouldnât object to just wandering,â he said. âItâs been a while since weâve been able to do that. Iâd like to see exactly how different everything is now.â
âItâs... a lot different. I can tell you that much.â Steve said shaking his head, âIn some good ways and some bad. Mrs. OâDonavanâs bakery is gone, but the Zeffirelli's restaurant is still around, their granddaughter runs it now with her family. The food still tastes exactly the same.â He smiled, and grabbed his keys, and wallet, tucking the latter into the back pocket of the clean pair of pants heâd changed into after his shower. âItâs a lot to get used to Buck, but itâs still home. It takes a while to see it that way, but... you can still see pieces of it in the older parts of the city.â He felt the corner of his mouth lifting up even further, âCentral Park is a hell of a lot bigger than I remember it too.â
Sitheachban:
Bucky knew he was staring, but at lease he wasnât the only one. Sam had gone silent, too, while Banner seemed to be muttering to himself about timelines and algorithms.
This was like nothing else heâd seen in the âfutureâ, since breaking Hydraâs control. Technology and pop culture had changed, but â especially after some âtutelageâ from Shuri â Bucky had found a lot of things maintained the same theme, if not form. Nothing would have prepared him for seeing two of his oldest friend and (relatively) new lover and having to determine which one was actually his.
When one looked to him for help, he wasnât even sure what he could do.
Stepping up onto the platform, ignoring Bannerâs warnings about possible dangers, Bucky stopped standing in front of the two Steves. He took his time looking them over, enhanced senses trying to discern any minuscule difference that might help identify one from the other. âIâŚyouâŚâ He shook his head. âItâs like looking at two mimeograph prints. You look more identical than identical twins.â
And, they did, even down to the identical looks in their eyes as they looked at him for help.
âFuck.â A hundred years of friendship and youâd think heâd be able to tell his own boyfriend apart from himself. âComparing knowledge, I guess? Is there any other way to tell?â They couldnât have had exactly the same experiences in two different time-realities, could they?

Steve glanced between Bucky and the other Steve, trying to figure out just who was wrong here. He had an uneasy feeling about the whole thing. The possibility that either he or some version of himself was stranded somewhere where they didnât fit again wasâŚupsetting. Though hopefully it wouldnât be difficult to return to the right time.
If it was him. How would they even tell which one was right? He and this other Steve looked exactly the same. It was unnerving. He took a breath and let it out again, forcing himself to be steady as he glanced back over to Bucky. âYeahâŚs not the same as just traveling to your past really. This isâŚI meanâŚsame moment and all.â
He rubbed the back of his neck. âI donât think so. Well uhâŚIâm Steven Grant Rogers. Born 1918 to Joseph and Sarah Rogers. Buckyâs been my best friend since we were kids, and then he went to war and I decided to follow him. A scientist gave me a chance, and I was injected with the serum and turned into thisâŚâ He gestured at his own body, a wry little smile on his face.
âFor a while I just ended up a USO guy, cause they didnât think I had what it took to be on the battlefield. Well eventually I ended up in Italy and rescued Bucky and the other men from the Hydra base there. What followed was a team formed specifically to take down every Hydra base and Schmidt as fast as possible.â
Steve glanced over at the other two again. âWell? Howâs it sounding so far? Anything different?â
@neverlikedbulliesâ @sitheachbanâ _______________________________________________________
Steve nodded along with everything that his other self was saying, all of it making sense, and following along with what he knew. All of it sounded the same, down to the letter. âAll the same. From there, on a mission to capture Arnim Zola, I lost buck on a train altercation. It... well needless to say it tore me up pretty badly. We found the main base, and thought we ended it when Schmidt dissapeared after trying to use the tesseract, and I put the Valkerie in the water to keep the bombs from dropping on U.S. soil.â He reached up, rubbing his fingers over his eyes and the bridge of his nose firmly, as if trying to quell a headache, âThen I woke up in 2012, saved the world from Aliens and Loki, found out Buck was alive, took down SHIELD which had been infiltrated by HYDRA, and lost him again... Tony tried to develop a security system for the world that ended up becoming hostile, calling himself Ultron, and we stopped him, destroying half of a country called Sokovia in the process.â He paused for a moment, turning to look at Bucky. He wanted to take him into his arms, just to feel a little safer, a little more in control, and to take the comfort he knew he needed from such a strange situation. But he had no way of knowing if this was his Bucky, and he didnât want to go straight for that if it wasnât. âFrom there, well... the world wanted to regulate when we could and couldnât help save the world. I didnât agree with Tony, and I found Bucky again, he had some of his memories but not all, and in the end, half of the Avengers went into hiding, and Bucky went to Wakanda because they thought they could help.â His ears went a little pink then, and he looked down at his feet, fighting the blush off his face. If this wasnât his Bucky, then this could get really awkward really fast, âShortly after he came out of cryo, Buck talked to me about things... and well... weâd lost so much time from not saying anything already, and we started a relationship then.â He cleared his throat and looked away, feeling tears starting to prickle the backs of his eyes. What if he was lost again? What if heâd been the one to leave Bucky this time? He couldnât bare that, âThat all sounding the same?â @sitheachban @thexsummerxsoldier
getinthefunvee:
Bingo, Tony thought dully, not quite believing that his gamble had worked. It shouldnât have; whatever sort of evil bastard the masked man seemed to believe he was capable of being, he was still very much just a guy in a suitâa guy in a suit, with a knife, and the apparent knowledge that termination protocols were a thing that existed, and that this terrifying pile of muscle and leather would probably sit there, docile as a lamb, while Tony stabbed him however many times it took, in however many vulnerable places, for termination.
For a moment, he thought he was going to be sick. Then the man hauled him upright, and Tony hissed through his teeth, the fractured edges of his ribs grating together.
Clearly this business trip was a write-off.
He tucked the knife awkwardly into his beltâthe blue eyes tracked the movement, and if Tony didnât know any better, heâd think the glance was this side of judgementalâand focused on keeping his breathing steady and his vision from blacking out.
Why is he using ASL? Something about Russian spook ops and the incredibly fluid movement of the manâs big hands didnât add up. But then, what the fuck did he know about any of this?
âSo weâll call that report completely fucking useless,â Tony said, when he thought he could keep his voice steady. As much as he didnât want to put himself at the mercy of whatever this thing was, he didnât have many options. Curious, he half-fumbled the sign for âpermissionâ, flicking up Vs made with the fingers of both hands.
âGo on. I can tell you my ribs are fucked and I have a pounding headache, if that gives you any clues. What do I call you?â
The Commander did not flinch at the manâs tone when he rendered the report useless. He was used to being reprimanded for situations that were out of his control. He was surprised however, when no physical blow or punishment followed. The blue eyes shadowed by stringy blonde hair narrowed in confusion, but he did not question it. To question a handler was unthinkable. When the man made a signal with his hands that he did not know, The Commander felt familiar panic rise in his chest. Was he supposed to know this? Had he been taught and forgotten? His head tilted questioningly to the side as his breathing started to quicken. Nononononononono. Panicking meant vulnerability, and vulnerability meant handlers got killed. He couldnât allow that weakness when the security of an agent was at hand. The man was speaking, and he needed to listen. Gritting his aching teeth, he blinked, and tuned back into the conversation. Once permission had been given, his hands were surprisingly gentle, lifting his coat and pulling his shirt from his pants to reach beneath, and gently feel for broken ribs. There was one, but he had nothing to set it with. Mentally he added this objective to the top of his priority list right underneath escape and keeping his handler alive. âWhatever you feel necessary sir...â He answered the question as he pulled back to look into the manâs eyes, inspecting for the signs of a concussion, and probing his head softly to find where the pain was coming from. âSome of the usuals are Soldier, Asset, and filthy mutt.â Once his search was complete, he fell back into his parade rest to give his report. âBroken rib, top priority under safety and escape, minor concussion, observation for 48 hours imperative.â Once again, at the small of his back, his fingers made the signs, as if by using them it would make the pain in his head and face lessen. âReady for orders sir.â
