So, I’ve noticed there’s a lot of chatter lately about how there’s no central community for Charles/Erik XMFC fandom, how (and I blame some most of this on the structural flaws of tumblr as a community building device, because I’m Old On The Internet) there’s no way for everyone to come together...
(Shyly) de-lurking to say I heartily agree re: Tumblr being problematic for actual community-building.
I love the idea of reviving the LJ communities, but I wonder if one of the reasons they've gone tumbleweed is because a lot of people have moved on from the LJ format, or aren't interested in getting an account in the first place? (I haven't used LJ in years, so I don't know if the interface has improved since then.)
...Another option could be a free-standing community using a site like Ning or Grou.ps.
Grou.ps is kind of neat because it mirrors most of the functionality of the useful parts of Facebook (including a live chat channel), but adds things like forum threads, a community wiki and blogging options. It's completely plug-and-play. A test community tossed together in ten minutes: XMFCbeta.grou.ps.
Would this be something folks would be interested in using?
