Rory was entirely unaware that he’d been hunkered down long enough to raise concerns about his whereabouts. He was well-meaning but he wasn’t used to having others depend on him, especially since he and Everett lived together and the other usually knew where to find him.
“You got a sixth sense, bud? I could eat a house.” He laughed, knowing better than to just dismiss the concern of a child. He reached for the bag that Sam had offered, opening it to peer inside at what they had brought him.
He glanced up at the mention of a haircut, his smile widening. “He’s probably right, cuz mom would no doubt do a way better job.” He grinned, switching the bag to his other hand and reaching to scoop the boy up under one arm. “Come on, let’s eat and see what we can do about this mop.” He nodded for Sam to follow as he toted Mateo inside the house, dropping the bag on the table and his son into a chair. “You guys decorated for Christmas? I was thinking we could go look for a tree.” He suggested, pulling a piece of fruit from the bag and starting to peel it. He’d always loved the holidays, and while his enthusiasm for them had faltered in the wake of losing his parents, he had re-discovered his love for them through getting to share them with Mateo. “We gotta show your Grinch of an uncle the true meaning of Christmas.” He teased.
As much as she always said within tera that she could provide for Mateo herself, and that she didn’t need the bother his father, she was very grateful that now, not only did Rory know about Mateo but he was such a big help. The little boy could be rowdy at times, but knowing he would get to go see his dad, or that his dad would be by to see him soon, it always calmed him down. Sam smiled as she entered the house, following the two before letting out a sigh. “ That would be.. great. He seen someone messing with some colorful lights and he’s been begging for some kind of decorations since. “ She chuckled at the young boys goofy and excited laugh when Rory mentioned Teo’s uncle, if it took a village to raise a child.. This was their village, and Sam’s heart was so full just with the fact that Mateo had people who cared for him. Sam was kind of just letting the two boys catch up for a moment, this was good for her. Once Mateo started asking Rory about there being enough space in his house for him, and maybe his mommy, she quickly tried to change the subject. -- Not sure if it was the little boy wanting his family together more than they were, or if he was a little scared by the noises and things going on out by their place. " He's silly. see what happens when you go mia?? he starts thinking about how to maximize time with you. " She teased playfully.
