Aleks was here. Buhbye Renee.
I have thirty minutes to fuck about before my shift..... to go to Evil Twin or to poop around on my bench.
24 Hours Before Nubbins.
Max had been dreading his trip back to Denver for the longest of time but with the loudness of San Francisco increasing and the recent attacks in Chicago, it had been no better time. Theyâd packed quickly and got the two best buddies rallied together and been out the door before noon. The silence were nice at first, the peace and quiet of just driving, and then they made it into the city.
Everything were normal, minus the slight screams and what sounded like groaning outside.
He chalked it up to someone being shot and refused to open the door, ignored the news, and just played with Zoe and Malcolm for awhile. Then it came to Reneeâ curled up with her on the couch, tightly wound and watching television for the last few hours.
"Agreed. Feels nice to not touch anything involving the internet for once."
Zoe was napping on Renee's shoulder, so she had taken the opportunity to harass the munchkin cat, stroking her side until the cat rolled over, falling right into Max's side. The cat was too chill to care, yawning and curling up there instead, Malcolm had already made his home on a pillow by the couch and was howling every so often at the sounds outside. Renee was just thankful the back yard had a privacy fence, so they could safely let Malcolm out to do his business.Â
"If it weren't for the weird noises, I'd say this vacation was the best idea ever. Not saying it doesn't come close, but those noises are weird." She frowned, listening. It sounded like groaning. Almost like the impossible. Zombies. But that wasn't possible.Â
Right?
24 Hours Before Nubbins.
Denver. Boring ass Denver for a few days of peace and quiet after what seemed like months of civil unrest across the rest of the country. It was better than the screaming of San Fran, that was for sure and Malcolm and Zoe were happy roaming the house with reckless abandon, Malcolm howling off and on. If it weren't for the weird noises outside, it would have felt like home. They'd been hearing it off and on for the last few hours, but couldn't quite place exactly what it was. Renee wasn't about to go look. She was happier cuddled against Max on the couch watching t.v., Zoe and Malcolm at their sides. "Pretty decent vacation," she said, yawning a little. "It actually feels kind of nice."
Adam stood by the scene silently, at a loss for words for the first time in what he knew was years. The reddish-brown haired strangerâs odd guttural grunts picked up again, and Adam made a face. âWait, he speaks Zombie?â
"Well, I am a zombie so." Patrick shrugged,...
"That's my fault." Renee muttered, sinking against a wall. "At first there, he /was/ attempting to eat me. I had a-" she motioned, at a loss for words as to what it was. Bigger than a usual knife but smaller than a sword. It had been in the basement. "But I couldn't...I couldn't." Her breath blew out in a defeated sigh, her head hanging. "I love him. A lot." She looked at the other redhead, their expressions mirrored and she knew Fee felt the same about her own partner.
"They're downstairs, if maybe the... um. Arms might be...salvageable."
--- "What are the odds...?" Fee muttered, shaking her head. Astronomical was most likely the answer they were looking for. Two not-quite-zombie zombies in one group. It certainly increased their odds of surviving.
"I used to be a medic, but that requires surgical skill I don't even come close to possessing. Now if these were a different kind of zombie - say raised by magic - they could function independently...." she trailed, noticing a few stares. "What?! I know my zombie lore, okay? I grew up on Romero and shambling corpses on the silver screen."
Adam watched as the stranger ran forward, stepping in the way. âHey hey, easy there lady! Thatâs our friend in there.â He warned, brandishing the bat. âAnd Iâm not about to let you kill him if heâs still maybe alive. No Heads go flying until Nee gives the Okay.â He...
Renee let out a soft whine at the sound of Max saying her name again, torn between running to him and flinging her arms around him and sinking to the floor, weeping.
"Nee. Nee is my nickname." She whimpered. "My name is Renee Reynosa." She said. "And that's Max Gonzales. My-" she hiccuped. "My boyfriend."
--- "A special case? It doesn't sound too far off." Fee admitted. Looking at the zombie, she realized that the woman in question seemed to have been attempting to pull a Michonne. But she couldn't finish the job.
"Fee. Felicia Connelly. And the zombie translator over there is Patrick. My boyfriend." She sighed, omitting his last name in case of any other shenanigans. She didn't need the man any angrier than he already was.

I submit no excuse. If this is what I have to doI owe you every day I wake.If I could I would shrink myself, and sink through your skin to your blood cells, and remove whatever makes you hurt butI am too weak to be your cure.Is this the way a toy feels when its batteries run dry?I am the watch you always wear but you forget to wind.Nobody plans to be half a world away at times like these,so I sat alone and waited out the night. The best part of what has happened was the part I must have missed. So I'm asking you to shine it on and stick around,I'm not writing my goodbyes.

Adam winced at the distant screeching sound, nodding at Aleks and going to speak when the other man reached the door, Renee already in his arms before he said a word. âI do hear it, youâre not nuts, thereâs definitely something scraping at something. Oh, hey there Renee.â...
Renee froze in the hallway when she heard that disembodied voice say her name. It almost sounded like Max, except with a startling starting-stopping sound. Her eyes widened and she stared down the hallway toward the basement, breath now coming in heavy gasps. "Max?" She asked, shaking.
Knowing she was acting very foolish, she took a staggering step forward, toward the door as it opened, Max stumbling out the door.
--- "Know the zombie....?" The question died on her lips before it was even fully out, Felicia running forward, startled into action. "Don't-!" She yelped, watching the other redhead duck back inside toward the source of the moan she had just heard.
"Don't do it! You don't really think it knows who you are, do you?" She didn't even make it toward the door before she stopped short, knowing the two strangers were likely to grab her and stop her anyway.
"I... don't... he said my name. He said my name!" Came the frightened reply.
[renee + adam] | i'm not sick but still far away from sane
Itâs a soft noise that starts simplyâ a âRrrreeeeeâ noise that Max is trying to make as he slowly nudges the chair out of the way and from under the door handle. He just knows he has to get to Renee because she and the animals are the most important things to him, right after his mother and brother. He has to make sure that sheâs still safe and that heâs not losing his mind.
Max needs her to be okay because heâs not sure what heâll do if sheâs not. He just doesnât know. He doesnât know the truth about himself because his vision bleeds reds and greys and the only thing he knows is what few human emotions he has left.
He groans again, nudging the handle again. âNeeeeeeee.â His voice cries; he can hear herâ sheâs just on the other side and is she crying? It sounds like sheâs crying.
â
"No souls of the innocent until after we get this done." He points his machete at Adam, not exactly a threat but a warning all the same. "But yeah, itâs Max. Nothing until the say so or the no go." He adds, because shit man, he canât kill someone like himâ he likes Max almost too much and he couldnât. He would refuse until the end of time.
Aleks is pushing forward now, slowly closing his car door and searching the area. âSee anything on the perimeter?â He asks Adam as he shifts forward, trying to move as quietly as possible now. Once heâs at the door, heâs knocking softly, anything to get her attention.
"Nee? Itâs me."
Itâs then that he can hear a scraping sound from somewhere down the street and it makes him cringe. He swings toward Adam, curious. âYou hear that, right?â He canât be losing his mind now, that would be stage one of the infection and there were no way. None.
She can hear him moaning on the other side of the door, the jiggling handle slowly shaking the chair loose. She clings harder to Malcolm, the dog whimpering and licking at her face as her weeping turns to ugly, loud sobs. Malcolm's fur is going to be soaked by the end of this and she isn't sure she cares. Her shaking hands stroke the husky's soft fur, the motion in and of itself quite comforting. She's started to calm down when she hears it. From the other side of the door there's the clear sound of her nickname. "Neeeeeee."Â
The sound, Max's disjointed voice, makes her shriek and jump to her feet, startling Malcolm who takes off into another room. And then there's salvation, a soft knock at the door and Aleks' voice. She runs to the front door and flings it wide, throwing terrified arms around her friend and sobbing into his shirt. "He said my name. He said my name -- and I don't know what it means. I saw him turn. I watched." She whined, jumping at the sound of the chair clattering to the floor. She moved, ducking back into the house watching as the basement door creaked open.Â
_____
Fee had lost count how many times she had willingly and angrily smacked her head against the window of the car. She was secretly hoping to give herself an aneurysm so she could exit the apocalypse in relative peace. Denver was supposed to be safe. Clearly it wasn't but they had to think rationally about it. "What if it was safe? What if it was safe but the same thing happened here as it did in other cities. Contaminated plane. Contaminated vehicles. Even the fucking army couldn't hold this off for long." She said, smacking her head against the window again. It was going to bruise, and she didn't care. But the screeching of hook on vehicular victims made her grimace and cover her ears.Â
"Can you turn your goddamn road rage down a notch before I go deaf?" She snapped, sitting up right again and focusing on the road. That's when she saw it. Another car, survivors. "Patrick, stop the fucking car!" She yelled. "Do you see what I see? Survivors. Other people. The --- it hasn't been here long. They don't know what's going on. Their posture- they're scared..... There's someone inside the house. This was a rescue. C'mon, let's go." Her hand was on the handle, already ready to get out of the damn car and into some semblance of normal again.Â
Because killing zombies was normal.Â
"I just want to be sure Cathyâs okay." Adam mumbled, then shrugged. "I donât need to hide, Aleks, i told you, the Zombies just, sorta ignore me." He stated, shrugging. "Itâs weird, but Iâm not complaining, it means one less thing I have to worry about." He spun the...
She heard the car pull up, distantly, as if in another world, rocking back and forth, weeping. Max was dead. And trying to open the basement door. With what she assumed was the nubs of his hands. Or what was left of his jaw. She wasn't sure how much longer the chair would hold the door closed. She also wasn't sure if she had it in her to leave.
Malcolm padded over and stuck his face through the arms she had around her knees to reach her face, licking her with whiney abandon. Slowly, she untangle herself from her knees and threw her arms around Malcolm, weeping into his fur. "I miss him. I miss him too, buddy." She hiccupped.
"I canât leave the city." Adam insisted, shaking his head. "I canât leave, Cathy never came back, I gotta wait for her. I have a safe place thereâŠ" He mumbled, starting back down the road toward the address heâd been given. "You people canât make me leave, if you still...
The phone had long since disconnected, and she sat sank against the wall furthest from the basement door, whimpering and crying as heavy banging and moaning came from the other side of the door. She tucked her knees against her chest and bit her lip to keep herself from crying.
"Stop. Please stop. Just leave me alone. Please, please just stop. Please, I can't- I can't do this. /Please./" she chanted, voice getting faster and more desperate until all sound from the other side of the door ceased. Save for the occasional rattle of the knob trying to turn.
Adam, this is a friendly reminder that in zombie apocalypse, there is no respawn if you kill us.Â
"Oh I know where that is, here, Iâll just move Cathy in the back seat and we can go get Renee!" Adam smiled, grabbing his bat and setting it gingerly in the back seat before dropping into the driverâs seat, nodding to Alex. "Well come on! Daylightâs a wasting! And Nee...
The sound of the basement door slamming is drowned by the sound of the car door over the reciever, but with Max in the basement, Renee has a moment to breathe before she takes a nearby chair from the dining room and shoves it under the knob. She sank to the floor, silent tears sliding down her cheeks as she did so, Malcolm coming up and licking her face with a whine.
"Aleks? I'm going to hang up now, okay? Just- hurry you guys. Malcolm, Zoe and I are waiting." She said. "Good luck. Please get here safe." She murmured.
