Summer is often a time when employment options can be top-of-mind for recent graduates and those seeking to climb the career ladder with a change in position or employer. Employers might also be spending some time in these summer months evaluating their success in gaining new business, satisfying their customer/client needs and creating stronger brand loyalty for the company.
Consider this: Interpersonal communication skills can be more important than intelligence and product knowledge in the business world.
Here's why:
Customer service has always been a significant part of business success. Now, more than ever before, companies are realizing that customer satisfaction is tied directly to their success or failure to effectively communicate successfully. Customers were once limited to what they could purchase within easy travel distance of their homes. Today, the modern market offers nearly limitless potential choices. A customer service experience gone bad can motivate your client to access your competitor by phone or internet. For a business to set itself apart from its competitors, it must offer more than just convenience and low prices. Employees with the necessary communication skills to easily interact with customers in a friendly, positive, and effective manner can provide existing and potential customers with something they may not be able to get elsewhere, increasing loyalty and customer retention.
Customer experience today isn't limited only to the nuts and bolts of the transaction but rather to the totality of their experience interacting with the company through its customer service/call center representatives. Customers with a positive experience interacting with your company are three times more likely to recommend your company to others.
Companies: Be aware that the person on the end of the phone line represents your company to your customers or clients. They are your brand ambassador. Does your customer service team have the skills to drive new business and retain existing business? Impactful training costs far less than lost or un-gained business.
Candidates: "Take the temperature" of your interpersonal communication skills. Polish your vocal presence. It can make a difference between getting a job offer or a polite rejection.

For more than 27 years, I've had the opportunity to be part of infrastructure improvement projects in New Jersey—the state where I've been a resident for most of my life. Engineering projects by their very nature bring unique challenges to overcome, but designing to accommodate utilities, including community involvement in the design process, and minimizing construction impacts are challenges that have to be managed on almost every project. These challenges provide opportunities for our team to develop creative solutions, build consensus, and ultimately provide local and regional improvements that benefit generations to come.
