“At an estimated 62 years old, the ball python is believed to be the oldest living snake.

Mark Wanner, the zoological manager of herpetology at the zoo described the birth as a “unique occurrence”.

“It’s amazing, in my opinion, that a snake of this age is able to reproduce a fertile clutch of eggs,” he told the BBC.

The snake was given to the zoo by a private donor in 1961 and was estimated to be three years old at the time, according to Mr Wanner.

The oldest documented ball python to date was a male at Philadelphia Zoo who died at the age of 47.

Mr Wanner added that the zoo planned to publish information about the snake’s age and asexual reproduction, if and when it is confirmed by testing.

Three eggs have survived and remain in an incubator. They are expected to hatch within a month.”

I couldn’t find anything, but I just sent an email to the St Louis zoo asking about it! They sent off genetic samples trying to determine if partho or if stored sperm can last 15 years and I really, REALLY want an answer to that!

…apparently my obsession with parthenogenesis has not only NOT died down, it’s spread to other reptile species.

I never got a response to my first inquiry but this popped up again. So I decided to try and ask about it again. And almost immediately got a response this time!

“Our ball python is doing well but is not on display for guests to see. As I understand it, two snakes hatched, but one is no longer alive. I’ve been told that the other hatchling is doing fine. That’s really all I know at this time. No other information has been provided to us and our keepers have only given me the above information to share with the public. There are no follow up news articles currently planned but hopefully in the future.”

Even one is amazing! Probably can’t get any more information outside of knowing one of the keepers, but I’ll take what crumbs I can get. Partho snake from a 60+ year old ball python. Nature is metal.
