Cam Sanders Pitching Mechanics

Cam Sanders has had some excellent outings in the SEC tournament. He has MLB “stuff” with a mid 90’s fastball and an above average curveball with exceptional break that produces swings and misses.

The 2018 MLB season has started out very promising for Gerrit Cole which is why we would like to take a closer look and analyze his pitching mechanics.

Gerrit Cole has a smooth delivery that is better than most but not as good as it could be. We see some minor discrepancies in his delivery such as some weight transfer issues.

You can see in the image above his arm doesn’t get totally vertical at point of front foot contact. This causes his arm to externally rotate more than it needs to which causes extra stress on the pitching arm. I’ve seen much worse weight transfers in pitching deliveries but Gerrit Cole borderline and shouldn’t cause a ton of issues.

In another picture you can see his shoulders sloping downhill and his elbow getting above his shoulder. This is an apparent weight transfer issue. We would much rather see his shoulders sloped backwards to properly keep his weight back and transfer properly. Also, keeping his elbow below his shoulder through his delivery will keep his shoulder healthy.

Lastly Gerrit Cole lands on the ball of his foot (lands soft) is great but transfers into a stiff/straight front leg. We would much rather see a bent front leg.
