LILI TAYLOR'S MYSTIC PIZZA SIDE PONYTAIL IS SO GOOD! It is fountainous and majestic. And I really wish her role as Jojo weren't overshadowed by all those other sad-sacky characters she's played over the years -- is that bitchy?
i luv buddies
Today is the 72nd birthday of Al Pacino, with whom I fell in love on Easter weekend while watching Dog Day Afternoon for the first time. And yesterday I was walking past the bakery in Little Iran that sells these really great raspberry-jam-stuffed pink macarons, and “Union Forever” by the White Stripes came up on my iPod, and I had a brilliant idea that Jack White should’ve made it an entirely different song that’s about Dog Day Afternoon instead of Citizen Kane.
Not that I don’t love “Union Forever”! I love the hell out of “Union Forever.” I just love Dog Day Afternoon like 87 zillion times more than I love Citizen Kane. Truly, my Citizen Kane feelings are basically the same as those of Rachel Green and Joey Tribbiani.*
Anyway, a few hours after not eating a raspberry-jam-stuffed pink macaron, I had the realization that Jack White really isn’t the one to author a “Union Forever”-y kind of song about Dog Day Afternoon. Just as I’m not really much of a Citizen Kane kinda girl, I feel like Jack’s not really much of a Dog Day Afternoon kinda guy. Jack’s not very ’70s-y or Al Pacino-y or Brooklyn-in-the-summer-y. And that’s all fine. Bully for Jack White.
So! Now I’m trying to complete the analogy that goes:
Jack White : Citizen Kane :: xxxxx : Dog Day Afternoon
It’s a real puzzle, man. It’s much easier for me to work out which lines of dialogue to steal for the lyrics, like maybe: “It’s all a whim!” and “Wyoming’s not a country” and “I’m a Catholic, I don’t want to hurt anybody” and “I’m dying over here” and “We’re all going to sunny climes!”, which is one of my most favorite lines of all.
And I suppose “Attica, Attica” would make the most sense for a title, analogously speaking, but that sounds dumb to me and I’m not into it. So knock it off and just please solve the “Who is the Jack White of Dog Day Afternoon?” riddle for me. If you figure it out I’ll totally give you a raspberry-jam-stuffed pink macaron and a recording contract, or at least a lot of love.
P.S. Happy birthday, Al Pacino!! And your eyelashes too.
*Seriously do not watch past 0:27 of this video. It’s so annoying after 0:27.
If you've never seen Dog Day Afternoon, you should really see Dog Day Afternoon. Today!

Yep, I stole ngfmsnaps post idea a lil’ bit. But I had to throw my own highlights of Mary’s mannerisms and general loveliness out there for all to see. In screencaps of course. Cuz sometimes pictures speak louder than words. ♥
PS - I will always look heavenward in search of my answers too.
There's a very special feature on today's Huffington Post! Our buddy Laura (whom you may remember from Complicated Women Karaoke) and her friend Kathleen played a BFF version of The Newlywed Game with Beautiful Mary Timony and Rebecca Cole from Wild Flag (whom I used to be mean about but I'm kinda coming around). These are my favorite parts:
-Laura's "come on!" gesture in the intro
-Mary's scared face at the start of the game
-Mary's lipstick, and also her nails
-Mary's hair
-Mary's shirt
-I love Mary!
-I love Mary's loving Yes!
-Mary should totally rock platform shoes (I used to have a pair of embroidered-dragonfly-adorned black velvet platform sandals that I think she'd look sooooo good in)
-Mary's "Phil Collins face"
-Mary's misnaming of "In The Air Tonight" as "(Something's Coming In The) Air Tonight"
-Mary's Jane Austen steez (I've got a Jane Austen mug that says "Obstinate, Headstrong Girl!" and Mary can totally borrow it if she wants)
-Mary's "any record by Can" note at the bottom of the desert-island card
-Mary's "guitar amp too loud!!" response (see above)
-Mary's lisp on "Beach Boys"
-Laura and Kathleen's background giggling when Rebecca and Mary are discussing fashion regrets/nonvoluminous hair
-everything else in this video in general because it's Amazing, Inspiring, Funny, Hot, and Important, just like all the buttons I clicked on Huffington Post

Last night my mom and I discovered we have the same favorite Elton John song ("Amoreena"!) and then I watched Dog Day Afternoon very late at night/early in the morning and now I really want to have a party every week where we just watch Dog Day Afternoon and then talk about Dog Day Afternoon for a wicked long time. ("Amoreena"'s in the opening credits. I haven't seen Al Pacino in like 19 hours and I miss him.)
