25 Minutes of Sadness

I love listening to tragic music, at full volume. What are some of your "saddest song" recommendations? Here are a few of mine, in no particular order: 1. Hello, It's Me by Todd Rundgren (although Paul Giamatti's imperfect rendition is equally as heartbreaking. Maybe even more so.) 2. Wichita Lineman by Glenn Campbell (the only version I'll accept). The song was inspired while driving westward on a straight road into the setting sun; driving past a seemingly endless line of telephone poles, each looking exactly the same as the last. Then, in the distance, he noticed the silhouette of a solitary lineman atop a pole. He described it as "the picture of loneliness". He then "put himself atop that pole and put that phone in his hand" as he considered what the lineman was saying into the receiver. 3. Only Love Can Break Your Heart by Neil Young. Perfection. I even dig the euro-pop version that St. Etienne put out in the early 90's! 4. Steam Engine by My Morning Jacket. Imagine listening to it live at Red Rocks in the pouring rain. Pure, emotional torture. Love! 5. Sleep Walk by Santo and Johnny. 3 words- Not MY Richieeeee!!!!Jesus, that song gives me LaBamba PTSD.

I think in the closing days of the campaign, if you listen to what Trump was saying, I mean, it was unhinged – this stuff about dark conspiracy theories and cabals of global bankers. It struck tones, I think, that were anti-Semitic. I would argue that Trump, in the final weeks of the campaign, was mainlining the purest distillation of Bannon’s views out there on the stump, and to my shock and a lot of other people’s, that actually resonated with a much larger segment of the electorate than we had anticipated.
