how to self-promo (without being icky)
i used to give lots of marketing tips over on twitter. my big one that i'll repeat here is:
treat your project as a solution to someone's problem instead of a product to sell
here's an example. @cassimothwin just released "Clean Spirit" and her messaging around the game is perfect.
many of cassi's followers know her for "What Crooked Roots" (which, if you're into folk horror, Curse of Strahd, etc. you MUST check out), a supplement for 5e. you know who buys and uses those supplements? GMs, primarily.
so the first line here meets those people where they're at.
"wish you weren't the forever GM?" -problem
"you get to play when you try clean spirit!" -solution
THEN she addresses the objections someone might have to grabbing a copy
"combines with your current campaign/requires minimal prep" -> see how cassi is still talking to GMs? and addresses the main hurdles between them and bringing a new game to their table?
people typically don't want to play a new game when they have a longterm campaign they're excited about - so slotting into your current campaign means people can have their cake and eat it too
GMs have no time to learn and prep something else (especially if they're running a longterm campaign) - so cassi highlights low prep time
and the final bullet to me ("learn about your dwelling, characters, relationships") describes what exactly you'll get out of bringing this game to your table
Clean Spirit is a lovingly crafted project AND it solves a problem for the intended user. no arm-twisting here, no degenerate sales tactics. if people get mad about this type of self-promo, then they just want free stuff and you don't have to listen to them.
