Happy Birthday to the F-100 Super Sabre! 🥳🎂 TDIH May 25, 1953, North American Aviation Chief Test Pilot George S. Welch took the YF-100A Super Sabre for its first flight at Edwards Air Force Base.

On a separate note, Test Pilot George Welch is best remembered as one of only two fighter pilots to get airborne during the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Flying a Curtiss P-40B Warhawk, he shot down three Aichi D3A “Val” dive bombers and one Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero fighter. 😎

Capt. Walter C Irwin was a decorated combat veteran who flew 86 combat sorties in P-47s and earned a number of citations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He would eventually break a speed and altitude record in the F-104.
