CALL YOUR SENATORS TO OPPOSE H.R. 2616
Video script:
Hey friends, even if you only have 5 minutes, l need you to stop what you're doing and watch this video right now. The US government is trying to pass an incredibly dangerous national bill for trans youth as we speak. Let's talk about H.R. 2616! Ironically named the Protect Kids Act, this bill does anything but that. It would ban all federally funded schools, which is a lot, from teaching about gender identity or sexual orientation, prevent teachers from using correct pronouns or names of trans students, remove books with any trans characters, and even go as far to prevent teachers from acknowledging that trans people exist. And any school that doesn't follow this, will lose all federal funding. Yeah, that's not only blatant anti-trans violence, but that's what fascist censorship looks like, friends. Something we never seem to learn from, because they do this same shit with a different marginalized group every few years. And an equally horrible part about this bill is that it would require teachers to forcibly out trans students to their families, even if they know that would put them at extreme risk for violence. A group that already has some of the highest rates of being victim to suicide, domestic violence, and sexual assault. And this isn't an exaggeration, this bill will kill trans kids.
So what can you do to help stop this? Well, this bill just rapidly passed the House this week with support from all 209 republicans and yes, 8 democrats. But this is still being voted on in the Senate right now which means there's still time to contact your senators to oppose this. And l can't emphasize enough that this will only take 5 minutes of your time. Visit 5 calls.org and it's one of the top issues titled, "Oppose Attacks on LGBTQ+ Students." Once you put in your general location, it'll pull up contact information for your senator and even give you a script for calling them. Okay, let's go friends and make sure to spread the word!
Spend 5 minutes. Make 5 calls. Make your voice heard.
