One day to camp:

missed posting during @nicky-hemmick-week because i wasnt fully using my brain all week. but ive been stuck on this songfic ive been working on for aaaages and i doubt itll be finished any time soon, so i figured id post an excerpt of the start to at least let it breathe a bit. its a pre-canon fic and its based on this song:

disclaimer: i know nothing about conversion therapy and what happens at conversion camps, and i did not do my research for this. still deciding if ill go back and do research for accuracy, but for now this is what i have. i also dont know what specific denomination the hemmicks are, so if they have a canon one that doesnt baptize before a certain age, whoops. i dont know my breeds of christianity that well. sorry
anyway, excerpt under the cut:
The church Nicky Hemmick grew up in was the type of Christianity that offered baptisms for babies. Some denominations of Christianity didn’t, believing that you must be old enough to understand and choose for yourself. Nicky’s church wasn’t one of those. Plenty of denominations baptized babies, because back when infant mortality was high, so many people wanted to make sure their kid could make it into Heaven if they didn’t survive.
Sometimes Nicky thought he wouldn’t survive Heaven, if his baptism wasn’t enough to keep him from being gay. They washed his sins away too early by baptizing him as an infant, and now that he was old enough to know if he would actually want to be baptized, he had just accumulated more. Accumulated sins he didn’t know how - or particularly want - to stop.
The camp his parents sent him to baptized the campers when they were ready to go home. It was the final step - once all the homosexuality was gone, the baptism would fully wash away the sin for the last time. Of course, there were more baptisms before then, over and over to make sure it stuck, mixed in with all the other dehumanizing horrors they inflicted on the campers.
Often, after the many times of being dunked under the water to save his soul, Nicky wondered what waterboarding would feel like. Would it start out like a baptism? If they held him under too long to wash away his sins, would he start to drown? Was this torture he was experiencing, and was it deserved? If this was torture, what did that say about Christianity? What did that say about his family?
What did it say about him?
By the time he was ready to go back home, Nicky was sick of being baptized. He never wanted to be in water again. He was headed home, but no amount of washing his sins away would ever make him straight. He knew this, but he hated it. All this torture for nothing. He’d go home, and he’d pretend, but he’d always know he could never be himself if he ever wanted to be loved. He’d end up married to some nice, generic, Christian girl and start a family with her, throw himself into his job to try to forget he hates his life, and then die miserable. It was depressing to think about, but it was his future.
It's March 28th... which unfortunately means that the Nicky Hemmick Week of 2026 is over. I add small detail on second entry of second page where to me, I think Nicky original try to give encourage verses before how he is raise come in play + he decide on Leviticus. These verse are Matthew 19:36 + Psalm 23:4.

Summary:
District Ten is an average district. As Panem’s main producer of animal products, District Ten’s tributes didn’t have many exceptional skills to aid them in the Hunger Games. This year, Nicky enters the arena and hopefully, he’ll make it back out.
His good sir, Nicholas Hemmick, was given the property after Mrs. Minyard's, née Hemmick's, passing and has taken it upon himself to keep the Hemmick House up to date despite the small number of people dwelling inside. He has asked me, the head-maid of the house, to grant him a log of upkeep requirements while he is head of the house.
